about the 5 most surprising players of 2012 for the Longhorns.
Lots of discussion but the two that came up in both a good and bad way were Greg Daniels and Adrian Phillips.

Ash by a mile
Following that same pattern, David Ash & Demarco Cobbs.
Good - Cedric Reed. Has stepped in and done a pretty decent job.
Bad - Demarco Cobbs. After 10 games, still looks lost and seems to forgotten how to tackle. This after Diaz pretty
much called him the key to the defense before the season.
I thought Edmond would be a beast on defense and an upgrade even for our run defense from last season. Surprise.
Good - David Ash & Mike Davis
Bad - All DT's not named Malcom Brown
The fact Jinkens is playing at all is very suprising to me.
The linebackers and safety opposite Vaccaro for me. They were the keys to the defense, and have let us down tremendously.
On the plus side, Ash, Davis, and Espinosa the last couple of weeks. They've performed against pretty good defenses.

David Ash - Great
Mike Davis - Great
Carrington Byndom - Bad
Greg Daniels - Good
Demarco Cobbs - Terrible
I don't think Byndom has been as bad as people think. Both he and Diggs have been thrown on and had their good games.
Phillips has been terrible after being glorified by this site and its sources.

My Humor wants to say
Pleasant surprise: Malcom Brown
Disappointment: Malcolm Brown
I did expect Malcom to be even better than he has been and I really have been disappointed for Malcolm. Ash has been good but I expected him to be good. I believe I would have to say that like the rest of you I am unhappy about our poor defense which was suppose to be so good. I also have been puzzled by our offense and the overuse of Bergeron. I do believe that Mack, if he stays should have his head set taken from him while Ut is on offense. I believe he goes it a turtle when we play OU. In fact I use to defend Davis saying it was Mack who was calling some of the plays. Mack was once considered a brilliant offensive coordinator- almost as good as his brother. I believe he does interfere.

I expected Ash's growth.
Very happy for Mike Davis to reclaim legit Black Shipley status.
Most surprised by Daje Johnson's ability to get on the field and make plays. Very bright future if he takes care of business.
Most shocked by how terrible Cobbs has been given all the reports prior to the season, but what can you really expect with no tackling in the pre-season? No wonder Bergeron is treated as the second coming of Sticky Ricky and Cobbs was made out to be some sort of Lawrence Taylor/Troy Palomalu hybrid or something. A lot of players probably look like all-americans when there's no hitting.
1. Adrian Phillips -
2. Mike Davis +
3. Johnathan Gray +
4. Carrington Byndom -
5. Cedric Reed +
Mike Davis gets included here because he has not lived up to expectations. We also didn't know Gray would be this good this soon.
Who is "we"? You got a rat in your pocket? Mack taking the training wheels off Gray finally doesn't mean Gray wasn't just as talented before the season even began. He should have gotten him more time in the first three games. Might have actually been able to beat WVU if he had. But I digress..
Signatures are stupid. You should block them.
I'm going to go like this:
Greg Daniels - biggest surprise
David Ash - biggest breakthrough
Mike Davis - best comeback
Peter Jinkens - biggest surprise
Cedric Reed - biggest breakthrough
On the other end of the stick
5. Chris Whaley
4. Adrian Phillips (moving in the right direction)
3. Mykkele Thompson (moving in the right direction)
2. Anthony Fera
1. Demarco Cobbs
Good- Mike Davis
Bad- Carrington Byndom
Demarco Cobbs and Adrian Philips being as bad as they are is the biggest surprises for me. I think the offense is coming along nicely given what they looked like last year
Hawkins-arguably the best OL when healthy
Pass Protection- not spoken of much and it isnt one player, but outside of the OU game the line has given Ash all day.
JOsh Turner- quietly becoming a playmaker. 1 int, 6 tackles, and sack.. I had my guesses prior to the season on potential guys to emerge and he was not one of them. I am feeling a lot better about his future contributions to the team than I did in Aug
I have no idea what you people are surprised about with Byndom. Even when he was taking heat for the Ole Miss or WVU games, it was misplaced - Phillips and Thompson knocked him off of routes and tackles. Byndom's played fine. Were you expecting Deion Sanders level production?
Malcolm Brown, Jeffcoat and Hicks with injuries although I will not be surprised next year if any of them are injured again.
Manny Diaz and his schemes
Thinking that Texas days of getting humiliated by OU was over.
Can anyone possibly explain just what happened with Adrian Phillips. I hope he rebounds next year. Kid looked like a rising star last year.
Alex King has to be up there for best surprise
