sad news. RIP Coach Royal
Very sad day for me and all Longhorns.
What a legacy. The tributes should and will be awesome this week. So many lives impacted and beloved by the entire Longhorn family. Great man, great impact, great ambassador and a great loss for us.
Few men will leave this life having impacted their community in a greater manner...RIP Coach.
Thank you Coach! RIP.
Sad sad day. RIP Coach Royal! You've now got the best seat in the house to watch your beloved horns!

I met Coach Royal when I was 12 and in a roomful of people, he made me feel like the most important person there. The look in his eyes that day 48 years ago will be engraved in my mind as long as I breathe. I am heartbroken today.
"I've heard some of our fans say, 'We were always an SEC school. We just didn't know it," athletic director Bill Byrne said.
Thoughts and prayers to his family and Godspeed Coach. A great man for sure.
Prayers for his family. Could not have asked for a better representative for the University of Texas than Coach Royal.
May God bless Coach Royal and his family as he blessed Texas....
What a great football coach and representative of our university.
Sad, sad day, but a great life and memories always. RIP Coach.
In his lifetime, he knew great highs and had to do what all parents dread. May he now rest in peace. We lost a fine man, but are left with great memories.

I had the good fortune to meet Coach Royal a few years back. He was a great man and a hero to me. Rest in peace, coach.
God's Speed Coach Royal... The Eyes of Texas will always be upon you!
My parents named me after coach Royal in 1968. It was a great honor to be named after him and what a legacy he left behind.
As another poster said: The Eyes of Texas will always be upon you.
My favorite coach of all time. Loved coach Royal. Thoughts and prayers to his family and the Longhorn nation.

Thank God for Darrell Royal. There are so many things that can be said of his legend that it is hard to know where to even start. The thing that stood out the most to me about him was his amazing persona. I say "persona" because I am speaking of his personality in the public eye. I imagine that his true personality in private had some differences with that persona, as is usually the case.
He had a folksy, yet highly intelligent eloquence. He was compelling to listen to. He was a macho man, and his teams reflected that. He was known for playing by the rules and was immensely respected by all. In my opinion, the greatest sports figure in state history.
I have always thought that Darrell Royal fit the position of head football coach at The University of Texas the way Sean Connery fit the role of James Bond. Difference is, there was nothing fictional about Royal’s career at UT. I do not believe there will ever be a coach more fitting for the Longhorns.
RIP coach Royal, you will be missed by many! thoughts and prayers go out to his family in this time of mourning.
Very sad day, RIP Coach Royal.
