I'm convinced Manny will not be back next year...who does Texas look for next year? I think if you can get John Chavis from LSU you have to pull the trigger...what say you???
You'd be foolish not to try for Chavis who is the best DC in CFB right now. That said he's already making $1M+ next yr and the big12 and tex is way out of his comfort zone. He's got complete autonomy on that side of the ball and is Mack's future even secure?
GET AT ME
How about me?
I could use the money and I certainly could do no worse.
I posted this in another thread, but I kind of like the idea of Randy Shannon. He was the DC at Miami from 2001 through 2006 and now he's the LB coach at TCU.
I would love Chavis or Kirby Smart, but I doubt either of those guys would leave LSU/Alabama for anything but a head coaching job.
already interviewed Shannon when Manny was hired, don't see that happening.
would be interested in hearing the Mods insight on Manny's replacement.
I like Randy Shannon too
Why would a top notch DC come Texas when Mack will probably to gone by 2014?
Diaz isn't any good but the biggest problem is the HC.
9 and 4 at Texas sucks!
- Jeff Howe
Would he come?
- God Bless Texas
Let's let Charlie Strong call the defense.
Give it to Bo Davis
Chavis will be next HC at Tennessee.
Shannon has too much baggage of various sorts to be hired here. Chavis has no reason whatsoever to leave the comfort of LSU where he is highly paid. He would be fabulous but it ain't happening, otherwise he would already be here instead of Manny.
From the looks of the way KSU handled OU and WV, their DC understands the importance of scheme, technique and tackling. The SEC is not necessairly magic when it comes to defending spread offenses. I am not looking forward to the Manhattan trip.
I do think it would be tough for UT to pull a top flight coordinator with it possibly being a one year gig. Especially if they don't put some type of HCIW tag on it...and Mack has said he wouldn't go that route again..maybe we're stuck with Mack and Manny for a while...
boy how quickly things change. heading into the season MD is on the top 3 assistants in line for some big HC position. heck espn had basically already given him the tennessee job next season.
now half of our own fans want him canned and i can't say the feeling is not warranted at this time.
I completely agree with this! It has a lot to do with how young we are at different levels on defense but it has much more to do with schemes and coaching. Last year Manny had a better defense with Randall, Acho, Robinson and Gideon but with that said, we still got destroyed by OU and Baylor. His schemes against elite offenses are not good.

I've watched KSU def control OU & WVU spread offenses on the road...& are far more physical & fundamentally sound than any other def in the conf
Yea no chance
Our DT play has been poor.
If Mack doesn't allow tackling in practice, no one is going to help this defense. There has to be a change in philosophy and practice work ethics for anything to be fixed.

While it may only be a one year gig, it could also be viewed as an audition for the full time gig.
I'd like to see Jerry Gray as DC for the Longhorns.
not sure they're going to want someone whos just going to bolt to the NFL at any opportunity he gets.
