That's an understatement. Kiffin was a mistake but a lot of people thought he was a good hire at the time. Dooley was just a terrible hire - you don't take a 4-8 coach from LA Tech and expect him to do anything at the next level.

Brenhams next star Darrion Johnson Class of 2014
I think I am resigned to the fact that Mack will be back next year for sure because Dodds is leaving after next year I believe. Jan 2014? somebody correct me here. I would like to credit them for being smart, but I would think that they want the new AD to make the most important coaching hire instead of somebody inheriting somebody else s decision. I believe that would make the AD job more attractive.
The present state of Texas Football won't kill us, but how much more blood will be lost before things change.

If you're not making mistakes, then you're not doing anything. I'm positive that a doer makes mistakes.
Funny! Nice job!
That ain't a bad gig for Rhoads. Pull off an upset or two, make bowl games more often than not and take $2 mil to the bank every year. I'd take that.
Horn4jc thanks for that. It may be funnier now than before. What a classic. Did that moronic unqualified "journalist" ever lose her job? I would think that rant put extreme pressure on the paper to relocate her.
Bruce7 thanks for the UW link. Alvarez made sense even before the team captains went to him imploring him to coach the bowl game. He built that program into a regional powerhouse and certainly has the qualifications. This alleviates the angst over which coach to elevate to interim and it could vault Alvarez back into the spot if he wants it.
Are they going after Mack next?
Heard him on Dan Patrick this morning. Didn't sound like he had any interest in coaching the team after the Rose Bowl. He was really confident he'd find the right guy to take over.
How bout Johnny Majors? Serious do many people know that the only Texas Born coach who has had a stadium at a major university named for him is at Tennessee- General Bob Neyland.
Look at his coaching record!! Pretty darn good.

At LTU or TTU if Tubbs leaves? I could see both pretty easily.
I got brains. I got big ol' brains. I got dinosaur brains.
May be true, but it might be a stupid call. The Major is a combo of Saban & Urban. He couldn't do any worse.
Is any worse really what we want?
I agree, sometimes you have to take a chance on someone. Major would be an instant improvement. He certanily can do better than Mack. He has smarts and is well respected, he's young and energetic and I believe he can handle any addtional responsibilities that goes with being the head coach at Texas. Wake up people!!
Coaches are a crap shoot. Some great DCs and OCs become hot commodities and become terrible head coaches. Then they go back to being coordinators. In the NFL, Wade Phillips has never been a good head coach, but he's sure done wonders with the Texans defense.
Major has the makings of a great head coach. He's always been a student of the game and energetic. No question about his ability to recruit. But how good is he with X's and O's? How acquainted is he with both sides of the ball in terms of having credibility with all the players? What kind of practices would he run? I'm sure they're are other questions.
It's certainly not unprecedented for major programs to hire coaches without head man experience. Bob Stoops comes to mind. But he had years of autonomy running the defense under Spurrier. Those tend to be exceptions than the rule. So you don't want to be too hasty in naming an inexperienced coach.
But we shall see.
You made some great points and I agree with them. My point is that sometimes you have to take a chance. Major has been exposed to many defenses and offenses to surely have formed his own coaching philosophy. When someone special comes around you have to give them a chance. Florida did and so far so good, it could work at Texas, but yes it would be a risk.
Of course this is all a moot point, I guess.
Our friend Chupita believes Major is truly qualified. I mean he studied at the knee of Greg Davis.
