There will be much more later in the week as signing day comes, but for now . . .
Tubby Smith and Tech will be hiring Alvin Williamson to be an assistant coach. Williamson is currently an assistant coach at TCU.
All the WVU signees got to play together in an All-Star game a few days ago. Sounds like Devin Williams was anything but bashful about putting up shots.
Smart says he's still undecided, but I have a hard time seeing him stick around another year, since he's a top 5 pick.
Austin and Jefferson also weighing options.
NBA deadline to declare is April 28, but NCAA deadline to withdraw is today.
Self to visit Wiggins April 23. Williams to visit him April 22.
And in a note outside the conference,
Larry Brown is thinking this isn't what he signed up for. Gee, Larry Brown having second thoughts about something. Never thought it could happen.
Thx Bierce.....good info
I posted on the A&M site about Pooh joining Tech too. He continues his quest to coach at every school in the Southwest.
Thanks for taking the initiative again, Bierce.
A heads up on each team's late commits who have yet to sign and might this week:
Kenny Cherry, 6'1" JUCO PG
KJ Bluford, 6'2" JUCO PG
(Note: ISU also picked up Daniel Edozie, a 6'8" JUCO PF who turned in his LOI at the very end of the early signing period).
Neville Fincher, 6'9" post-grad prep school PF
Frank Booker, 6'4" SG
Hudson Price, 6'6" SF
And yes, Tech is still without any commits. I wonder if Tubby hopes to lure Alex Foster who has been released from his commitment to Minnesota.
Hunter Mickelson just announced his intent to transfer from Arkansas. Former top 50-60 type 6'10 PF with 2 years left. Kind of saw this coming 2 years ago when Arkansas hired Anderson. Just wasn't a fit, but Mickelson stayed for 2 years, which is a decision I suspect he deeply regrets.

Clearly Smart is gone, but the two Baylor kids may well be back. Austin has played himself out of the first round in most of mocks I've looked at. Hard to believe than Myck does project as a first while Austin doesn't, but it is what it is. Clearly, Austin can make himself a lot of money if he comes back and plays himself into the top half of the first round.
Smart has scheduled a press conference for 12:30 today, and the report is that he will announce his intention to return to OSU for another year.
If Smart, Brown and Nash all return, then OSU will probably be favored to end the Jayhawk run of 9 straight conference titles; however, I don't see how OSU has the openings for all of its signees in that case.
I suppose Soucek might leave. He's already 22 and only played 6.8 mpg in 6 games before being injured.
TCU has approved a design for a $45 million renovation project for Daniel Meyer Coliseum.
TCU will have to play somewhere else during the 2014-15 season while the coliseum is under renovation.
"These things have a way of working themselves out."
“Kansas may wind up number one in these polls, but that would be so unfair to Texas...” -- Len Elmore, 2/13/11
Sometimes the jokes write themselves.
"Aw, look. They're going to help the little one."
Apparently sweet aliens from galaxy quest.
Dominique Elliott asked for a release from his LOI with OU, and it was granted.
I'm trying to think why his playing time would be that limited. OU will be replacing Osby, M'Baye, and Fitzgerald with a slew of JUCOs and transfers. OU's remaining 4/5s are Hamilton (JUCO C), Bennett (JUCO PF redshirted), Spangler (transfer PF, sat a year), and Clark (all 6'6" of him), so it isn't like OU has proven big men.
Hale says OU backed off because Elliott wasn't meeting academic requirements, but I take that with a high degree of skepticism.
KU assistant coach Joe Dooley is now FGCU head coach Joe Dooley.
We'll soon learn if KU will promote Sadler from director of basketball ops or get another assistant coach.
Bluford signed for ISU. 205 three-pointers in the last two years. Think he'll fit the Hoiberg scheme?
Price signed for TCU.
Heh. If only it were that easy.
Which leads to the esoteric question of which is the more effective way of weeding the population in a basketball program? Cannibalism or having Billy Clyde Gillispie as the head coach?
Cherry signed with Baylor.
The three for Texas have signed, but KYH had yet to send his in as of 6:00 p.m.
Getting a home visit with 2014 Jahlil Okafor. They'll only have to beat out Kentucky, Kansas, Duke, UNC, MSU, Arizona, etc. Oh yeah, KU gets a visit, too.
The cost for a 31,000 square foot box to put the original rules of basketball has risen to $18 million.
Travis Ford isn't going to improve the schedule, and he's guilty of overstating the difficulty of the OSU schedule. He put it in the 20s. Pomeroy said 58th overall, 204th in non-conference. RPI says 41st.
Fincher signed. KSU will need his size.
Hornbeak has a stress fracture in an unspecified foot. Expected to be ready in the fall.
Josh Gray is transferring to Odessa JC. Thus endeth the Red Raider career of Gillispie's best recruit while he was the Tech coach. Tubby loses the team leader in assists (and turnovers and ugly 3 pointers--Hannahs missed few more, but Gray made only 15 in 80 tries).
I'm sorry, I don't see a difference.
