Well, let's face it, he would be unemployed by UCLA. Hey, UT, learn from what "real" basketball schools do. They just fired a coach that has been to three final fours, a national championship game and won their conference this year! But UCLA felt that his best days were behind him and did not want the program to slip, so they fired him! Meanwhile, UT allows the clown Barnes, who cannot claim half of the accomplishments of Howland to continue to ram his ship into the iceberg. I know that UCLA does not have the money that UT does, but they are still eating over $3 million on a buyout. That is what real schools do when they feel a change is needed. And they are going to get Shaka Smart, who we could have probably gotten if we tried. Can you imagine the recruits Shaka could bring to UT from Texas? Wake up! UCLA sets standards for their coaches and terminate them when expectations are not met. That is the way it is supposed to be.
Agree, but unfortunately, there is bigger clown at Texas... DD!
Rick Barnes has been a very effective coach, for the most part, at a place with a shitty venue and crappy fans. I think people still don't get how fortunate we have been to have Rick Barnes as our coach. A part of me would love to see how Barnes could do at a place like UCLA where there is a real basketball facility and a fanbase that cares about basketball.
Hey Rick, how long have you used the alias "sundancekid"?
Yeah, we are fortunate to have a coach that could not diagram a play if his life depended on it. Coaches the most boring style of basketball in the world. Can't recruit his own state, even though there is no competition from fellow Texas schools. And singles out his kids in public whenever he fails. No coach is lower than Barnes when it comes to throwing kids under the bus.
The answer is somewhere in between.
Rick Barnes is not a clown.
Nor has he been very effective, at least not for the past several years.
And our venue and fans aren't the problem -- though more passion would help.
Watching the tournament over the weekend has reinforced the bad state of our program. There are soooooo many better teams out there. They are sooo many more talented -- I don't think Texas has a player that could start for FGCU -- and better coached teams offensively. They are soooo much more fun to watch. And I don't see it getting much better anytime soon.
Barnes needs a significant makeover and fast. Every successful coach deserves a down year or two to rebuild. Having said that, there's not much hope on the horizon and we're trending to basketball irrelevancy.
The problem is that I don't see Barnes "re-creating" himself at this stage in his career. He is set in his ways and cannot change. I agree with your observations. Watching the NCAA tournament you realize that all of these teams are playing an entirely different game, especially when it comes to offense.
Are you out of high school yet? You talk like a teenager. Have some class. I am not Rick Barnes, nor do I have his bank account. It sucks that we just had a losing season, Barnes' first in a long while, but Rick has done a whole lot for our university and our basketball team. Even if people would rather see him move on, why call him a clown, or insinuate that he can't recruit and throws kids under the bus. That's just not true. The reason he has a hard time getting a lot of kids is because he doesn't play the AAU games and that our fans don't care about basketball. When will that compute. Howland and Barnes both have a hard time dealing with the immaturity present I so much of our youth today. We call it tough love. If you want to play basketball at Texas but don't want to play defense and love throwing up stupid shots you're going to ride the pine. That's the way it is. High school basketball recruiting is a mess as so many reps and coaches are crooked like all get out. Howland is still a good coach, just a bad fit for UCLA. Have some respect.

We're fine. Everything is good.
Could you pass that around, we all need to see through rose colored glasses. My stuff must be bad cause I think the BB program needs help...now.
Yes, I agree the problem is your inability to see.
Signatures are stupid. You should block them.
what does a facility and crowd have to do shitty offense and teams that underachieve? the stuff you talk about has not bothered recruiting because he does get top recruiting classes and he is paid like a top notch coach!! at the end of the day, the last 3 years have been a joke!!!!!!!!!
He wouldn't be that effective at one of those schools. He's had very little success without an elite PG (with the exception of 2006) because he's never had much of an offensive system.
And while the FEC sucks, Barnes has facilities to sell recruits that rival almost anywhere else. And he'll never be a threat to leave for a bigger, better job because he knows he has it good at a football school that pays him like it's a basketball school for football school expectations. I always laugh when the rumors of Barnes leaving for an ACC school come up.
You can take personal shots all you want. You sound like someone that has never played basketball at a high level and don't know the game. But if you think Barnes is earning the $2.5 million a year contract he is being paid, fine. Keep that head stuck in the sand.
Should we expect these kinds of posts from you on a daily basis? I thought you made your position perfectly clear in your first post.
BTW, UCLA might not be in a position of having to fire a coach today if they had not been too quick to fire Steve Lavin after one losing season.

What I do not understand is what happened to the Utah Jazz offense we were running at the beginning of last season (maybe two seasons ago)? I'm not a bball X's and O's guy, and I haven't been watching as much UT basketball since I graduated 2 years ago and moved to Houston (damn you LHN), so forgive me if we still run it, but if my memory serves me correctly, it seemed to be really working for us when we had Hamilton, Thompson, Joseph and Brown, and then we just abandoned it and settled for the confused, random screening we employ now.
They were trying to run the flex offense for most of the year. They just don't do it very well.
I still have faith in Barnes, but blaming this on Erwin Center is a clown excuse.
Disciplina praesidium civitatis
Minn just canned Tubby too
-100.........66 is a clown and I would guess never played sports at any level.

"Leadership is wisdom, courage and great carelessness of self"
That's a stupid move.
Minnesota needs to know their role.
That's just beautiful.
You beat me to it. The flex set is still called a lot, but we're amazingly disjointed in running it. Which is odd to me, because it's a simple thing to learn.
