My time started at "GEORGE!!!!"
Dance with Lance is also worth an honorable mention, even if it's that perma-tan used car salesman Tom Penders' team. No offense to Eddie Oran intended.
Disciplina praesidium civitatis
No, you couldnt... no seriously.. You couldnt.
Do better? No.
Hard to do worse though.
never thought I would ever agree with Belmont favorite Shawn Bradley. Always a first I suppose...
Penders put us on the map, and for that, I'll be eternally grateful. But let's not get overly nostalgic. Penders' guard heavy offense was fun to watch but it did little in the tournament. Moreover, we could not defend any decent big men at all (see Joe Smith, Acie Earl, Juwan Howard, etc.).
Penders' lone bright spot in the tourney was 1990's elite 8 run with the BMW, players he didn't recruit. The other years were pretty much second round losses, so as badly as the Horns have been in recent years, Barnes still has a far better resume at UT than Penders.

Long Live BMW!
He's just doing Deloss a solid and parking it right back in the garage where he found it
Are they jacking it up and running it in reverse to take the miles off the odometer?
I actually believe Barnes and don't see it as spin. He's taking responsibility for his mistakes. I think what he is talking about is miss evaluating work ethic, Passion, and commitment to excellence.
I also don't think he's just talking about the guys that transferred. From what I can gather from guys I know, he is talking about a few of the other problem guys that have come and gone. He wants to get back to recruiting high character guys that work hard and are unselfish.
Good kids who graduate won't get it done.
“Kansas may wind up number one in these polls, but that would be so unfair to Texas...” -- Len Elmore, 2/13/11
Never said anything about 4 yr guys. I'm with Bierce that the 4 yr types that we've been getting are due to misses on others.
What I am talking about is guys like Marcus Smart and PJ Tucker instead of guys like McClellan, Hamilton, and Brown.
I don't disagree, really. It's just that Randle was that kind of player, too. What I'm saying is, finding the right kind of temperament is great, but he needs players and he doesn't have enough.
Basically, Texas' recruiting has been a total cluster f*ck the past few years...esp. at the guard position. Does this staff even know what they want? They hit the "reset button" a year ago, now they are doing it again.
I'll say it again, if McClellan and Lewis weren't good fits and were basically "misses" by this staff, then what in the hell is Texas paying Barnes' 2.4 million dollars for? If Ridley and Ibeh don't improve this coming season, I can see similar problems arising at the post position as well.
They better figure out what they want fast, and do something with it even faster. Geez....
So you're saying that other schools don't have some misses in their recruiting? If other schools didn't have misses then the number of transfers wouldn't be at an all time high.
I agree on Randle. From what others have mentioned he was told by "current" players to go elsewhere.
I think the recruiting woes really go back to not taking Forte to get Smart. If they had done so they probably land Randle and everyone is happy. But, they thought they could land Smart anyway and here we are.
I'm wondering where they stood with Smart.
I read that as not wanting four years of Forte more than they wanted whatever Smart was willing to give. In retrospect, Smart went to Oklahoma State and came back. You'd have to figure that he would have done the same thing with Randle coming in.
It turns out that if Forte doesn't improve a lick he's still a decent D-I guard.
The whole point is that Barnes needs players and doesn't have them. It would be one thing if he were Tubby Smith or Bob Knight with Xs and Os. But he's not.
