Barnes on departures: "We didn't evaluate exactly as we should have.
We're going to be really selective to get the right kind of player."
WTF is this supposed to mean? So he's admitting that him and his staff did poor jobs of evalutating McClellan, Lewis, Gibbs, and Bond; and now they need to be more careful? WTF?
Why is Texas paying this guy 2.4 million dollars?
I could do better at player recruiting and evaluation making $25 an hour....no seriously...I could do better.
More Barnes' quotes: "We're excited as we've ever been as a program. We're in the best shape we've been in in a couple of years. Our (to be) sophomores have a tremendous amount of experience, but it's their passion that separates from what we've had in the past."
I don't know how you can be a head coach at a major school like Texas, never win a conference championship and rarely if ever win the conference tournament and consider yourself a success. Showing up in the NCAA and getting bounced out in the first or second round doesn't cut it.
When his emphasis and crowning glory was getting his players into the NBA, that's where Barnes lost me. Not winning championships and not regularly getting to the Elite 8 proves to me that he is seriously over paid and will never be the answer. Plus, his offenses are boring and undisciplined. We need a new coach. There are at least 20 others who are better than Barnes.
A la Mack Brown.
Marty: The last time Tap toured America, they where, uh, booked into 10,000 seat arenas, and 15,000 seat venues, and it seems that now, on their current tour they're being booked into 1,200 seat arenas, 1,500 seat arenas, and uh I was just wondering, does this mean uh...the popularity of the group is waning?
Ian: Oh, no, no, no, no, no, no...no, no, not at all. I, I, I just think that the.. uh.. their appeal is becoming more selective.

People might also want to read the "brief history of the 2011 class" thread to see what was said about the players before, during, and after their first season.

Was it Texas being selective that made
Embiid choose KU?
Austin choose Providence?
Jefferson choose Arizona?
Wainright choose Baylor?
King choose Memphis?
Frazier choose SMU?
Rick is in pure spin mode. Its that simple.
He is really putting himself in a corner this year. Especially since one of his freshman hasn't qualified yet. Either he knows something we don't or he is a lunatic.
Well, this piece is called "Lick My Love Pump".
". . . in D minor, which is the saddest of all keys, I find. People weep instantly when they hear it."

It will be interesting for sure.
My favorite basketball quote comes from Deloss Dodds in February. He truly is either senile or a troll (speaking about Kentucky winning the NC in 2011-2012 with 5 freshmen):
“You can be really successful like Kentucky was,” Dodds said. “They had five freshmen. That worked for them … But if I were doing that, I wouldn’t feel good about that. I wouldn’t feel good for the university. I wouldn’t feel good for the kids. I wouldn’t feel good for the fans that just barely get to know them before they’re gone.”
Did any of y'all follow Longhorn basketball before Barnes became coach?
I always upvote for Spinal Tap references
Tyrone Branyan getting blocked by Jim Krivacs in practice, but being the smartest player ever. Krivacs falling out of bounds baseline after getting an errant throw and chucking it at the basket for the swish as Texas goes on to win the NIT.
Mike Wacker hitting turnaround jumper in Hofheinz, running down the floor and laughing with Michael Young about how it is Young and Drexler that are supposed to be doing that, while Texas upsets Phi Slamma Jamma.
LaSalle Thompson shoving five fingers into Hasting's face a week later in the Drum.
Kaiser Bob playing cheerleaders.
Travis Mays with the hand clap after missing a perimeter shot.
A used car dealer touting something called the "Running Horns."
Need I continue?
At this point I would take the perm.
If passion is what he wants......... then let his players share the showers with the cheerleaders.
This is the whole "changing the culture" marketing line that Dodds and Barnes have been spinning lately. The goal is to buy Barnes another season, and then it's someone else's problem to deal with.
After 15 seasons on the job, Rick is ready to define the culture of his program. It's almost as laughable as Mack being re-energized again.
So would I. I don't know what happened to Penders at the end, but the thing that made him a successful coach was that he coached his players to play loose. They were willing to take the shot and make it when they needed to. At his pinnacle, he was the anti-Barnes.

What does that have to do with what Barnes is doing now as a HC? Does he have the right to return the program in the same spot as when he got here?
Might want to check those record books.
This is going to get me in trouble, but what the heck.
