I looked over our defense for 2013 and feel good about our situation...
DE will include 4 guys with experience (some significant) and 2 guys that took a RS last year. Jeffcoat,Sr. (with a chance for a medical after the season), Wilson,Sr., Reed,Jr., S.Davis,Soph., Ridgeway,RS Fr (could play DE or DT), Cottrell,RS Fr.... I also think that Raulerson and Hughes could move to DE with this years incoming freshmen.
DT will include 4 guys that were in the regular platoon last year as well. Dorsey,Sr., Whaley,Sr., Brown,Soph., Jackson,Jr. and 2 guys that took a redshirt from last years class in Norman,RS Fr., and Boyette,RS Fr.... again, Ridgeway could play both DE and DT as a RS Fr., and Raulerson could beef up move to DT as well.
OLB has 5 guys with experience, and one leader in Jordan Hicks,Sr. (with a chance for a medical after the season), Cobbs,Sr. (I hope we can move him to RB or SS0, Jackson,Jr., Thompson, Jr., Jinkens,Soph. and Cole,RS Fr. that redshirted last year. Davis and Hughes (could play DE potentially) will like RS with 6 guys in front of them.
MLB has 3 guys with experience already, including last years starter in Edmond,Jr.... Santos,Soph, and Benson,Jr. will provide experienced depth.
CB has 5 or 6 guys that have experience already. I also think that Phillips,Sr. is better suited for a CB/Nickel spot and hope that we have an answer at S to replace him. Byndom,Sr., Diggs,Jr., Turner,Jr., Scott,Jr., Thomas,Soph all have experience, and Echols learned under a redshirt last year. Incoming freshman Davis should have a year to learn the ropes with a redshirt if Akina choses to do so.
S has only 4 experienced bodies (Phillips,Sr., Evans,Jr., Thompson,Jr., Vaccaro,Soph.) with Colbert taking a RS last year, and Collins and Huhn coming in with the new recruits. I wouldnt mind seing Cobbs back at Safety or RB this year. We could absolutely not afford to miss on this position for 2013.
Overall, we seem to be in good shape for 2013. The defensive line should be our biggest focus for 2014 recruiting. Each (DE, DT) will likely lose two guys to graduation at the end of this year.
You enjoy getting into arguments, don't you?
Have you considered who will be coaching them? Major better get his boys ready to score 50 on any team on any day...
You also failed to mention once the single most important factor for the defense.
The defense, on paper, looked like it would be fantastic in 2012 as well.
Your optimism will surely please the masses. Prepare yourself and remember who is calling the plays. Same guy as last year with two first round picks.
Plenty of guys with experience being the worst defense ever fielded at Texas.

I expect that we need for the 2014 class:
2 MLB's --- I would rather move Moss or De La Torre back to their natural position if it were me and just get 1.
2 OLB's --- if Hughes moves to DE this could be 3
2 CB's --- If Diggs leaves after his Junior year this could move up to 3
2 S's --- I still think that bringing in Meander gives us a bit of flexibility if he doesn't stick with the WR's. It could be only 1 that we need here
2 DE's --- This depends on what happens with Ridgeway, Raulerson, and Hughes... still think that 2 is the goal for DE with a rich talent pool in 2014
2 DT's --- Again, Ridgeway and even Raulerson could move to the DT spot and that would create some flexibility. Because it's such an important position I would still shoot for 2 DT's in 2014 class. Atleast 1 JUCO guy.
True, but the year before they were one of the top defenses in the country under the exact same "guy"... I'll take the optimistic point of view on this one.
Upset of the century, folks!
the year before, the defense was coached by blake gideon
We just need Blake to come back to the 40-acres.
But their weakness was exposed the year before by OSU and Baylor. Since, they did not see it coming last year or unable to correct it last year. What makes you believe it will be better next year?
Well Celina - I'm an optimist.
We looked pretty good early in the season when we had Hicks on the field (minus poor tackling) and we faired OK at the end of the year.
I would have canned Diaz myself, but Mack is a loyal soul.
One thing is certain - we will return a lot of experience in 2013, and once Hicks went down we had nothing but youth and inexperience at the LB position. IMO, losing Okafor and Vaccaro will be offset by getting Jeffcoat and Hicks back.
I was hoping for somrthing more than being an optimist.
Well, a more experienced LB group... and, again... at the end of the year our defense played notably better than early in the season.
We lost two LB's to the NFL draft going into last season... we lost our only experienced LB early in the season and had to rely on Edmond and a group of guys that had hardly played. I assume that the missed tackles will be cleaned up, but that is more on the players than the coaches.
The answer to your question is - experience (and optimism)
Its what Belmont signs his checks for
