Ok, so they don't have the best facilities, but if you do not win in college football you get replaced. He may be a good coach but it wasn't enough to win; therefore did he get the best out of the players he had? He was not a HC before ou, I believe, and now he's back with his brother because he did not get offered another HC post. If he were all that good he would be elsewhere as a HC, but he's not. I stand on the point, he does not get the most out of his players and win.
We'll see come October...Hook'em boomer.
He wasn't coaching superstars at OU when he was here yet produced great defenses every year. Guys like Strait, Everage, Thompson, Klein, those great college players but weren't highly recruited and never made it in the NFL. The Arizona thing isn't fair because two seasons in a row they were a game away from winning the Pac, something I don't think Arizona has ever had. He had job offers from Ohio State, Nebraska and Iowa but chose to come back to OU, that's a pretty elite list of job offers. He had one bad season and it got him fired but I pretty sure it was mutual because he's a family guy and after Mark left, it stopped being fun for him. He's an excellent coach and his number one attribute has always been getting the most from his players. I don't think we'll be a top 10 defense but even a decent defense would've had us 12-1 last year, instead of 10-3.
Not sure I follow. He's going to OU so he sucks.
Now SS, "the Arizona thing isn't fair," you say. College football is not about fair, it's about winning; your comment is very weak. He was not offered any of the HC positions at the schools you mention. If he'd been offered a HC at any of those places and turned them down to return to ou he would be crazy. Sure you're a fan of his because it's ou and I'm not because I'm a Texas grad...it's all very simple. ou sucks boomer and that's the way it goes.
I'm just saying, look it up no one wins there and he did. I'm not even sure the guy wants to be a head coach. He's very heated on the field but off it, he's low key and doesn't like a lot of attention. I've given plenty examples of not very highly recruited guys that were AA players by the time they left OU. But, to each their own. It's all good and its the time of optimism, and my Reds keep winning. Lol
I seem to recall Dick Tomey doing a pretty good job at U of A. I think the world will really understand that the best parts of the OU defense has been their leadership at LB. Venables has always been the LB's coach, and was Co-defensive coordinator during Mike's first tenure at OU.
Yep, Stoops has really made a name for himself as a "game changer" relative to great defenses. He sure did a number on the old desert swarm didn't he. I'm sure Harsin is scared to death.
When Stoops was at OU, his D's ate our lunch. His being back in goonerville is not a plus for us.
The LB's (Calmus, Lehman, Marshall) were just as critical to the defensive success of OU during Stoops' 1st tenure. Venables led the LB's and was co-defensive coordinator.
And, again, Dick Tomey did a fantastic job at Arizona during his career there. He led them to a 12-1 season and throttled Miami in the only shutout in the Fiesta Bowl.
Stoops had offers from Ohio State as co-defensive coordinator. Wow, a head coach being demoted to a friggin co-defensive coordinator. Sounds like his career is on the way up to me.
Also, wasn't Mike "coaching the defense" when Kansas State took OU to the woodshead in the Big 12 Championship? Or was that Venables fault?
Finally, a "family guy"? Didn't his wife divorce him, and there were rumours that he was having extra-marital affairs with U of A coeds?

Yep, Stoops also had Venables at LB's coach. I question whether or not his success was reliant upon Venables coaching the LB's. If he was so "great" he wouldn't have accepted a co-defensive coordinator job after being a head coach.
Guys - I am not a Stoops fan & I have no idea how he will do during his 2nd stop at OU. However, a good DC doesn't always make a good HC. Stoops wasn't an effective HC... It happens. Wannstedt was a great DC in college & in the pros. He failed as an HC in both college & in pros. Stoops was a good DC once & there is no denying that. It is a different situation & even a slightly different era now than the last time Mike Stoops was a DC so it's hard to tell if he will enjoy the danger success as before.

There's really no point in arguing with you Chupita. You've got your mind made up because his last name is Stoops. There's a lot of rational posters on here that can carry a level headed conversation, you're not one of them. He went 4-1 vs Texas, so either he's a pretty good coach or yours aren't, I choose the good coach route. You give all of the credit to BV but look at his defenses lately and they've been ripped. Also, that was BV that was destroyed by KSU. Mike didn't call a single play at that game. The OU secondary was nasty under Mike, as were the LBs but Stoops has a much better feel for game than BV. I'm not arguing with you anymore though because it falls on deaf ears but that's rivalries and that's what makes them fun. Btw, Stoops track record is much more impressive than Harsins and its not even close.

After watching video, the kid's footspeed & quickness looks questionable.
Venable D "ate our lunch last year"... OU losing BV is definitely a plus for us
To compete for conference championships you need top players. It's a wonder Stoops landed any top players with the worst facilities in the PAC. When he took that job he told AZ they had to upgrade their facilities which is the same thing Bob said when taking the OU job.
AZ told him they would but never did. He still won there with a hand tied behind his back.
Now with RR coming in AZ has decided to address their poor facilities. MS time at AZ as HC doesn't make any difference in his position at OU as DC. The only difference being HC at AZ made in Stoops is that he is now a better recruiter and closer.

Yep, he did a hell of a lot of "winning" at Arizona. Seriously? Just look at Tomey's record there. Didn't he coach in the same "worst facilities" in the PAC? Keep making up those excuses for the biggest hothead, underachieving head coach in the PAC. We'll see what he does without Venables on the sideline. We already know what he did to Arizona's defense over in Tucson. There is a reason that the best offers he could land were that of a co-defensive coordinator.
I definitely see the significant benefits that he is bringing to the OU recruiting efforts. He's getting solid 3* prospects that are barely in the Top 100 in the state of Texas. Get real. What exactly has he "closed" since 2000 (with Venables)? I'm sure he "closed" on his house in Tucson when he was walked to the door. Impressive stuff right there.
I guess we will have to wait until October to see if MS can coach defense.
It's pretty stupid to have to go back to the early nineties and talk about a coach at AZ and also mention facilities. You think 20 years doesn't age facilities? I know UT, OU, and OSU sure have different facilities than they did in the 90s.
Chupita - Just curious, did Mike Stoop take your girl-friend or something?? You sure seem to just have a beef with him, all 13 of your posts pretty much...Its pretty common knowledge nationwide that he is a top Defensive Coordinator... And yet you keep beating that Brent Veenables drum!!!! Brent, is that you!!!???? Haha

I would think that you would need to wait until the totality of the season wraps up to make that decision. Unless OU only plays football in October now.
Ye of little faith
Common knowledge? How so? What has he done to be considered a "top defensive coordinator"? He hasn't even had the role of "defensive coordinator" during his career. He was co-defensive coordinator, along with Venables during his first stop in Norman. I'm confused? Please explain what I am missing here.
Has Mike Stoops been a defensive coordinator in his entire career?
If so, how did he fair?
How was that Arizona defense that he, and Kiff, helped guide?
Honestly, am I missing something?
Co DCs are just a way to make everyone happy. He called the plays, not BV. He was offered by some very respected head coaches to come lead their defenses but chose OU. You don't know what you're talking about. And if it was all BV, why was there a dramatic drop off defensively after Mike left?? The last 5 years, with the exception of 2009, our defenses have been some of the worst this decade. Last years defense gave up the most yards in OU history, and coming off a bye week! Oh yeah it was all BV.
Actually, I already know he can coach defense. I don't have to wait and see. Every football minded person in the country knows he can coach defense too. Anyone who argues otherwise sounds dumb and really isn't very knowledgeable in football.
Dude, give it a rest.
Stoops (Mike) is a very good DC.
Also, he and Venable were CO-DC's at goonerville. They shared the job.
Thats what i said too. the ou staff developes players as well as anyone so if they offer him they obviously think he has talent. I trust their judgement.
There is nothing more dangerous in this world than a man with nothing to lose.
