Colt McCoy 2A vs. Tyrone Swoopes 2A

  • A lot of folks have joined the debate about Tyrone Swoopes as the next great QB prospect for Texas. This recruiting year, Texas made a major push for, and received a commitment from, Tyrone Swoopes over a number of other highly rated QB prospects within the state, including Cody Thomas and JT Barrett.

Irrespective of how anyone has viewed any of those players, one thing that can't be denied is that the level of competition for Swoopes is so far below that of many of the other big time prospects that it makes comparisons between them all very difficult. I guess the notion is that Swoopes would put up such ridiculous numbers that it would make it hard to do an apples to apples with someone like Barrett.

How about just using someone else as an analog? Colt McCoy was another 2A QB who went on to be recruited by a major D1 school. He also played with nothing special on his roster and his school had never been much before McCoy was taking snaps and they haven't been anything since. So why not look at Swoopes in the context of being a 2A standout versus another guy who fit the same bill?

Rather than go into the plethora of stats that can be sliced up any old way and most of which favor McCoy dramatically (he's the all-time leading 2A passer in Texas HS Football history), let's just look at team performances in their JR and SR years and see how their skills and leadership affected their teams' outcomes. Recognizing that Swoopes isn't finished with his SR year yet, we can just keep updating this throughout the season.

    So here we go:

    Colt McCoy:

JR - Tuscola Jim Ned went 15-1, losing in the state finals to San Augustine, 28-7.

SR - Tuscola Jim Ned went 12-1, losing in the regional finals to Canadian, 32-27. Canadian finished as a state semifinalist.

McCoy went 27-2 in his JR and SR years as a HS QB and took Tuscola Jim Ned to heights it never experienced before or since.

    Tyrone Swoopes:

JR - Whitewright went 7-4, losing in the first round of the playoffs to Lone Oak, 63-7. Whitewright lost 3 of its last 4 to finish the season.

SR - Through 5 games, Whitewright is currently 0-5. Whitewright lost this past weekend to Muenster (3-2 on the year), 51-8. Swoopes was out the previous week against Callisburg when Whitewright lost 35-6.

In the last 2 years, Swoopes is 7-8 as a starter. The good news is, he still has district ahead of him and he can still lead his team on a big run deep into the playoffs. Should be an interesting closing to the season. Here's hoping he can make a Vince/Colt-esque run with a non-traditional power that gels around him and allows him to carry them deep into the playoffs.

[Sidenote: Garrett Gilbert won 2 or 3 state titles as a HS QB, albeit with some D1 talent around him and in a system that wins titles irrespective of QB play, but it's good to remember records aren't everything, I guess.]

Anyway, thoughts? Who else is cheering for this dynamic Whitewright team to take on the identity of their talented leader?

I watched part of Swoopes first game this year and he has no talent around him, or else it is very bad coaching.

  • The thing that bothers me most about Swoopes is his attitude/personality. He so closely resembles Garrett Gilbert at this point that I don't even bother reading quotes from him, as I've already seen them. He's a soft-spoken introvert, much like Gilbert. He probably goes in stalls to take a leak. It wasn't Gilbert's "thing" to recruit players from his class, as it was the coach's jobs or some shit. Swoopes, who is highly ranked everywhere and kids know his name, is never mentioned by recruits as recruiting them either. Gilbert couldn't lead because it was an "upperclassmen thing", and I can already hear Swoopes muttering those words.

People want to compare Swoopes to Vince, Cam, Tebow, and other run first QBs, but he lacks the killer instinct of all those guys. Vince, Cam, Tebow, were all ginormous voices in the locker room, Swoopes is the exact opposite. People hope he can be Blake Bell, who has shown to be a marginal passer so far but a big, strong runner, but Blake Bell is the cockiest dude in every room he walks into, including Landry Jones' room. David Ash doesn't have that voice that the above guys have, but he's a cocky dude. Shoulders back, head up, looking the world in the eyes.

  • It is just hard to understand how a Texas level QB prospect can be 0-5 against inferior competition. You say the talent around him is bad which we all agree but I cannot recall many division prospects being generated by Callisburg High School.

Adrian Peterson played at Palestine Texas with no talent around him and he played Heman against inferior opponents. Why isn't Swoopes running for long TD runs and over powering inferior opponents?

There are serious red flags about this young man as a QB prospect.

  • I have no way of knowing the talent level of Whitewright or their opponents. I have seen Tyrone Swoopes up close and he is a physically impressive kid. I don't know if he is the kind of guy that will ever mature into an NFL type quarterback. I do sincerely believe that based on his physical skills that in the right system he could be a dominating college quarterback.

I have read the different comparisons between Swoopes and other run first quarterbacks and I don't think that VY, Newton or Pryor are the right guys to look at. I think that Tyrone Swoopes is something more like Tommy Frazier or Colin Klien. While he doesn't have the same top end speed as Frazier, I do think that he will be very difficult to tackle. I also think that he will be the beneficiary of some of the plus recruiting that Texas is currently doing on offense.Swoopes is going to hopefully have at least two years to learn before he has to take a snap at Texas. He will be the beneficiary of improved physical training, nutrition and coaching (both on the field and the classroom). When he finally does get the chance, it should be behind a better offensive line then we currently have with a deep backfield.

This is just a last comment but I think it speaks to the direction of Texas at the top. The last three quarterbacks were all guys that were not picked by Greg Davis. Overstreet, Swoopes and Heard (sp) are all plus athletes that can run spread option. I have heard that the picker wasn't our OC. I really think the future direction of Texas is to morph into an offense like Urban Meyer runs or something like that.

  • I'm hoping that his team sucks so bad that he is just pressing and that's causing problems.

Realistically, a top flight D1 athlete should be able to carry the damn ball by himself 35 times a game and beat some of these weak ass 2A teams. Should be like a grown man playing against his kids at that level. I mean it's not like he's playing against 2A teams like Refugio.

I watched Ricky Seal Jones play Columbus last year. Before the game was over I called Jeff Howe and Gerry and told them both that he sucked balls. He didn't make a single explosive play all night. By the end of the 3rd quarter he was sitting on the bench and pulling a towel over his head.

Did he do that every game? Swoopes is 0 for 4 in 5 games. When does he start doing something?

How the hell do you find all the time to spend in all these guys lockerrooms and Landry Jones room to know all this or is it because you like how one interviews and the other doesn't.

You are conveniently ignoring the results of his sophomore and junior years. You are also ignoring that he has been hurt much of this year. I don't know how else to explain it. He is 6'4" 225lbs, he runs a 4.6 to 4.7 40 yard dash. When he gets to Texas and is running behind an offensive line that is averaging 310lbs + he is going to be a load.

Paul Hornung won the Heisman on a 2-8 Notre Dame team and was one of the greatest backs of his NFL era.

Sure, Swoopes might be a bust, but I don't think UT was the only school that offered.

His athleticism is overblown big time. He's a good athlete when compared to other QBs, but he's not as athletic as David Ash. Bigger, yes, but not more athletic. And David Ash could not carry a team when only asked to use his legs.

That's good he's going to be a load behind that OL. They will severely shrink the playbook and teams will stack the box. Fun stuff.

Injury continues to sideline nation's No. 4 recruit Tyrone Swoopes
By: Dave Krider Sep 21, 2012
The first four games of the football season have been rough on Tyrone Swoopes and, therefore, rough on his team, Whitewright (Texas).

Ranked as the No. 4 player in the nation by MaxPreps, the 6-foot-5, 220-pound senior pulled a hamstring in the second game of the season. He re-aggravated it last week.

Team spokesman J.D. Henderson told MaxPreps this morning that Swoopes did not play during Friday night's 35-6 loss to Callisburg (Gainesville, Texas), which dropped the Tigers' record to 0-4.

It appears that rest is the only solution for the young star, who has committed to the University of Texas. In parts of three games, Swoopes has thrown for 555 yards and five touchdowns and rushed for 460 yards and six scores.

I saw that video. I also saw Swoopes' numbers in events that test one's athleticism. Ash is more athletic than Swoopes. Swoopes is the same level of athleticism as Connor Wood, only difference being that one is black and one is white.

  • I do admire CTJ's consistency. When he decides to get his hate on, he gets it on. Hey, CTJ, how about some love for the job Jeremy Hills is doing this year? You know, the guy you have proclaimed as a wasted scholarship since his junior year of high school?

At least with Hills you only groused about his athletic talents, but with this (and I emphasize) kid, you have decided to question his character and leadership. I know you were all over the Gilbert hate bandwagon before there was even a band, much less a wagon, but this is overkill, even for you.

  • In 2005, Cam Newton's Westlake team finished 4-6. They were shut out twice, put up 7 or fewer points four times, and lost another one 12-9.

  • Swoopes has played 1 injury-free game this year. His team scored 47 points in that game. (not that it means anything, but Jim Ned scored 47 or fewer points 8 times during McCoy's senior season).

Swoopes injured his hammy in game two and then reinjured it in game 3.

In games without him, his team has gone from 47 ppg to 7 ppg.

That's how valuable he is as a QB.

Through parts of three games, despite the hammy injury Swoopes has thrown for 555 yards and five touchdowns and rushed for 460 yards and six scores.
