Colt

  • McCoy's shortcomings exposed in Cleveland

Part of the appeal of Colt McCoy is the name. Which, a Texan knows, is not reason for PETA to get upset, but is merely a reference to motherless calves. McCoy is from Tuscola (population not a whole lot more than 700). He played with enough distinction to have his number retired at the University of Texas....

  • Seems like a pretty fair take.

  • If anyone is capable of proving 'em wrong, it's Colt. I hope he gets a shot to do so--if not in Cleveland, then somewhere else.

  • During the draft, there are always lots of comments about the importance of players going to the right team and winding up in the right situation. In Colt's case, he didn't come close on either count. A draft choice forced by the GM on a coach that didn't want him. That same coach never intended to play him, but had to due to injuries and ineptness of his other QBs. Then, a new coaching staff (with a first time HC) that took over during a lockout, preventing a smooth transition. A complete lack of any kind of decent supporting cast. Finally, an organization in which both the GM and coach see an opportunity to let Colt take the fall for their own shortcomings, thus buying them some additional time in their own jobs.

I admire any player that goes on to try professional football, but I don't change my opinion of their college accomplishments because of success or failure in the NFL. As a Longhorn, Colt will always be special.

    +1

He might end up a career backup but Colt never really had a chance with Cleveland. I cannot think of too many QBs that would have been successful in Cleveland.

Coach for me its not a fair take because Colt never had talent around him. Put him on the 49ers or Lions and see how he plays.

I am always reminded of a statement by Tom Landry............he said it took 5 years for a QB to be ready to play in the NFL. There are not many Tom Brady's or Payton Mannings who can play well in 1or 2 years. In fact check out Manning (both Manning's) first years as a QB.

Because of injuries Colt was forced into starting when he was not ready. With almost zero talent around him that became a problem. In addition keep in mind because of the lock out there was little or no off-season.

Well I won't debate the "talent around him" angle because Im with you on it. There aren't many, if any QBs in this league, who could do anything with that roster. I think he absolutely deserved a better opportunity and hopefully he'll get one. I was saying, I think the theme of the article was fair. Unless I'm forgetting something in the article the writer hinted that Colt was in a bad spot.

  • Question his arm stength yes but you question his accuracy and I'll tell you your research was severley lacking.

Also, I'll give you one guess which team lead the league in drops last year. I'm not saying hes without fault but I watched him play majority of his pro games and he made alot of plays happen singlehandedly. Hes being portrayed as a scapegoat for that crap franchise.

I'd bet you dollars to donuts they suck just as bad next year

I bet his accuracy has taken a hit for a few reasons. Smaller Windows. Playing outside in Cleveland, Baltimore, Cincinnati and Pittsburgh. Better defenses. Poor receivers.

It is hard to believe that they would draft someone that old in the first round. It sure limits your upside.

Then again, it is Cleveland we are talking about. Their idea of upside is different than other places.

Colt was deadly accurate when he had Quan, Shipley, and Ogbannaya catching everything in college. Give him comparable talent to work with, in regard to NFL receivers and defenses, and he magically starts completing more balls.

Having zero offseason to install a West Coast offense couldn't have been helpful in any way, shape or form either. Or being put back into games with a concussion.

  • Can't always judge a qb playing for the browns. Jeff Garcia had a stint there and wasn't recognizable as Jeff Garcia

The Lip never misses a chance to take a shot at Vince or Colt.

Add one more to that long list.
