Collins talks to Texas

With time such a precious resource it may hit a point where stabbing wildly at nearly impossible targets may prove detrimental. I love the aggressiveness, but I don't understand going full bore into these SEC kids and not more fertile grounds with talent just as rich. Especially with USC having a numbers limit for a bit and programs like UCLA and Cal being up and down (mostly down) why are we not attacking California with a vigor? We did win 2 Rose Bowls there just about the time these kids were in junior high so maybe we made an impression.

I like hot women, but if I have to choose between a 50% chance of taking home the bar hottie vs a .00006% chance of hooking up with a famous Hollywood starlet I'm putting my valuable time and effort in the 50% odds.

Agreed with everything you said JTG...But...This kid reached out to Texas...So, why not reciprocate & show him around and see what happens. I too, think the Staff needs to put much more resources in the SoCal region...San Diego-LA I-5 corridor...there is so much talent in the 120 mile stretch of freeway, it's ridiculous.

  • First off I've been following this site for awhile but just now decided to subscribe. I love this site and keeps me entertained, but like Bobby said, he expressed interest in us so why not try and pursue this kid. He is a 5 star caliber player with good instincts and track speed. Sure his recruitment will be tough, but at least it won't hurt us if he commits to LSU.

First, thanks for giving Hookem.com and 247Sports.com a chance.

Second, I agree that you recruit the kid. Doesn't hurt, see if he makes the unofficial and go from there.

If one of the very best in the country have interest and there is a need at the position, roll the dice.

  • It's funny how fickle posters seem to be. When mack and co. don't reach out to kids outside the state boarders they are lazy and when they do they are stabbing wildly. Any kid with sincere interest in us is going to have something to think about once he visits and sees what is being offered. I like what is going on here. I would love to see 20-30% of our recruits being out of state studs. There is no reason it can't be that way with the resources we have. I don't think many of our coaches have California connections that I know of but if we want to look at kids out there than vamanos!

  • Ok, you want facts...Here they are give or take a number here or there as I scrolled through on my phone...

Out of the National 247, here are the numbers...CA - 23, TX - 22 and wait for it....
    SEC territories - 88

Bottom line, even with the crap that goes on in SEC country, there is much to be gained over time with recruiting in these areas that are a target rich environment...Our new coaches have history in these areas...We have the knowledge and contacts not to mention unlimited resources...Most of the staff has only been here 3-4 months...Their plan will be known soon enough...I hope they recruit and target CA, the St Louis area, the upper Midwest...most of all it is now time to make a claim for what has been off limits in the SEC areas...After all, WE ARE TEXAS!

One, I never once said the staff was lazy. Not once.

Two, if the kid is actively calling and recruiting Texas then go after him. I'm talking about the Goldman's of the world where we're recruiting because of some loose connection to a grad assistant or something. The fact is there are a ton of strong, mostly dirty programs in SEC country that aren't going to let Texas just swoop in and start raiding kids. There is far too much saturation and competition on those areas to make serious recruiting worthwhile.

Meanwhile, the richest or 2nd richest territory in the land has either underperforming programs or a program on sanction, coupled with a lot of fertile recruiting ground elsewhere that has no major player as a home state school. Not having contacts there isn't an excuse not to start hitting those areas hard with the time you're saving by not chasing wild SEC dreams and making contacts/forming relationships. The only reason Texas doesn't have Cali contacts is because they haven't put in the groundwork in the past to establish it. Why not start now?

Per capita, the SEC region and states are most of the best in terms of producing NFL talent. It's not even close.

To the per capita part of it...

Cali has what 36-million to 38-million people and has 699 during that time span.

Florida, Georgia and Louisiana combine for 31-million or 32-million and have 947.

Texas has 23-million to 24-million or more and 568.

Florida and Louisiana have about the same combined and 766.

The talent that makes up most the SEC rosters is from Louisiana to Florida and up to North Carolina (a number of kids from the ACC state go south)

Find the NFL per capita and see where the states rank. Louisiana, Florida, South Carolina, Alabama, Mississippi, Georgia and North Carolina are all top 12-13 I believe.

To everyone else's point, Texas has better shots in California, Arizona and I believe the one area Texas should look more in, St. Louis area.

Not to be inflammatory in any way, but this map shows the SEC to have an incredible advantage over other conferences. Recruiting in the southeast will always be a bloodsport. Again, not to be inflammatory, but looking at this map you'll see the SEC remain dominant.

Before, with at least two girlfriends, a c***block, and possibly that one delusional guy who hangs out with her because he thinks he has a shot even though he's 100% friend zoned.

Once I befriend the guy to freeze him out then set up my buddy with the block it goes from 50% to signed, sealed, and delivered like Johnathan Gray at a UT Spring game.

  • Quarterback said...

    Why does that matter?

Because college coaches want to recruit the very best players/prospects they can. It's very hard to not look in that region and not give effort to recruiting the most talented players.

Doesn't mean it's smart for Texas, but it's still very difficult to walk away from and not try. Every kid Texas is trying to recruit in the SEC region is a difference maker type of prospect: John Theus, DJ Humphries, Torshiro Davis, Nelson Agholor, etc...

There are more of those types of prospects from Louisiana to Florida and up to Washington DC IMO.

Add in that Texas has members of the staff from Louisiana (Major Applewhite), Georgia (Stacy Searels), Miami (Manny Diaz) and one that coached at Alabama and LSU in Bo Davis. Those guys have some connections, and while it's not high percentage shots, it's still hard to walk away from at the end of the day.
