Coaches talk after the game

  • Mack Brown and the Texas coaches talked with the radio broadcast crew after the game.

I really thought the defense has shown tremendous improvement over the last two weeks....They're growing up....We thought the guys played really hard, played as well as a team as we've had all year. Thought this was the first real team win that we've had.

It seems like for whatever reason when we score first we win most of the games...Give our defense credit for hanging in there and fighting and blocking the field ago at the end.

Tech's got a good football team...Seth Doege's an outstanding quarterback. He can throw it as well as anybody in the country and he only threw for one touchdown today...Usually when we win the rushing game in this game where we stop their run and stop their screen game and rush for more than they do we usually win the game.

(Johnathan Gray) is very patient, he's very tough. He's fast but he's got strong legs and he can move the pocket...He was able to kill the clock with about 5:20 left....We're not in a position to play Malcolm Brown unless we absolutely had to....Thank goodness we didn't have to use him. We think he'll be back next week...Two weeks in a row Johnathan Gray's showed everybody what we've seen in him.

We've got to get No. 8 next week...I know the fans will really really help them this weekend because we'll need their help against a really good Iowa State team.

I thought he did great job, he got the win...We'll go back and look at the film, is it perfect by any means? No...(Th offense) has work to do and this week is no different...We knew going into this game it was going to take a hard effort, a tough effort...That doesn't change for any game from this point on...We had to bring the same physical attitude we knew they would bring today.

We have to find a way to pound the rock and we did...That's just part of the practicing and the training and the attitude, when it comes down to that fourth quarter we've got to win it....I could feel those guys were thinking this is our quarter.

I thanked (Mike Davis) for not giving up on that play...Guys will give up on that....But he stuck with it and David threw a ball in a perfect spot and Mike just battled..When it all comes down it that's the only thing that matters is we battled hard.

Carrington (Byndom) was outstanding...When you've got to go win a game like this on the road it takes special players making special plays and Carrington was money....He went full bore the whole way (on the field goal block) and made the play of the game that wound up icing it.

Vital stop (on Steve Edmond's tip). Vital stop right there. I thought Steve played really well. Steve gets shaken up on the next drive and we have two true freshmen linebackers at Tech with the game on the line....Everybody pitched in, as a coach that's what makes it exciting to see.

There's 100 things today that I'm mad about, but that's the way it's going to be...We didn't give up the long play, if you don't give up long touchdowns then you have to go play in the red zone...That's really what the game came down to, no long plays and great red zone defense.

  • Manny is completely right. Lots still wrong but guys made plays. Lots of young players everywhere now. Weird.

  • Proud that the defense bent a little but did not break. Great stops in the Red Zone. Carrington was the defensive player of the game.

  • The improvement in defense is markedly different. Its great to see them tackle. Its funny that we have to complement them for something basic like this but it is what it is. For the caliber they are at, they worked hard for sure.

There are 100 things i am mad about as well. The main one is the crappy overall coaching job that you've done with the defense this year.

  • byndom still doesnt know how to tackle he is always grabbing up by the shoulder pads and trying to push the ball carrier... other than that he had a pretty good game it looked like

  • The LBs were playing a different defense than they have all year. Reading the play before attacking the line. DEs were not pushing upfield as far. I didn't see all the ridiculous twists and stunts.
