Coaches talk after game

  • Mack Brown, Bryan Harsin and Manny Diaz spoke with the Texas radio broadcast crew after the game.

    Mack Brown

I was really proud of the way the kids fought..They put themselves in position to win the game in the fourth quarter, but then we had the two turnovers and the missed field goal. You can't do that against a good team and win the game.

It was the difference in the ball game just like it was last week...W understand that, we know that, we just have to protect the ball better.

He hit the deep pass on us, in the 4th quarter he started making plays....We stopped him last year and slowed him down tonight, but give him credit he made the plays to win the game.

It was a game that was very important to our staff and our kids and everybody worked really hard last week to prepare, and it was disappointing that we lost.

We'll get back tonight around 3:30 or 4...The guys will meet at 4:15 (I'm assuming a.m.) tomorrow, the coaches will acknowledge where we're going to a bowl and we'll start going from there...Our coaches will be leaving in in the morning early for recruiting.

I felt like being down there with the quarterbacks and the offense was the right thing to do to kind of have a chance to sit down and talk with those guys in between series to hear what they were seeing out there as well...I thought it was good. It was good to be down there with those guys. I thought it helped.

We felt like we could get on the perimeter and utilize some speed and it would help with the inside run game...Those guys did a great job, Daje had some great runs and D.J. had some big ones.

It's good to have Mal (Malcolm Brown) out there. I know he's been chomping at the bit. He's done everything to get himself into that position right there...To have him out there it makes everybody from a protection and run game standpoint better because it gives you an experienced guy out there.

Any bowl opportunity is huge for the inexperienced guys, the guys who have been redshirted. It'll be their opportunity to get in there and run some plays....That's what's great for them and they understand that.

  • This got old even earlier this season.

And the turnovers weren't the reason for 42 points.

Hook 'Em! ...'til early in the morn.

We were going to do what we do. Without watching the film I'm proud of how those (young) guys played. Peter Jinkens and Tevin Jackson - the seventh linebacker we've started this year - that's incredible....They battled that team right there toe to toe for the majority of the football game.

On playing mostly without Alex Okafor:
What exciting as a coach is you see everybody pitching in and everybody trying to do the best they can....

It's no secret that he's (Collin Klein) an outstanding player. I thought we played him well for a good portion of the game....It all comes back to when that quarterback's a runner they've got an extra blocker....They made some plays. That plus the turnovers was the difference in the game.

We have so few seniors on this team. This next month is about pushing on. This is a story that doesn't not end even when the clocks hit zeroes in the bowl game....They understand, there's no tomorrow. Tomorrow we resume the process of trying to win a conference championship.

  • I was about to post a comment about the inevitable post-game Brownisms, but it wasn't needed. We all knew we'd hear:

pride in effort shown while taking a bitch slapping
    turnovers
thought could have won, but disappointing result
    great things ahead

Yep, once again, our Coach Brown beams with pride about taking another bitch-slapping on national TV.

Wouldn't it have been nice to hear something like

"This is 3 straight years I've been unable to field a team that can compete at the highest level in this conference. It's obvious that it's time for me and the University to move on. The upcoming bowl will be my last game as the head coach of the Texas Longhorns."

  • When I saw "I was really proud..." I thought you guys were kidding... This is so ridiculous

  • Mack shitting all over the offense yet again.

We lost because KSU went back to their offense and Klein, even though he was obviously injured, killed us. We had no answer to the QB draw (as always) and they took advantage of our safeties aggressiveness with the PA bomb.

Mack can't be that dumb. I think this is some kind of insecurity/emotional issue that has him crapping on the offense after every loss.

If I only knew how to coach, we would be more competitive....... blah, blah, Mack.......I think you have officially lost most of the fan base. Congrats.

    The offense sucked too.

They did as well as they could with Case as QB. KSU won because they scored TDs on 4/5 second half possessions.

KSU was throwing the call around in the first half, and when Snyder saw that was a losing game plan due to Klein's deficiencies as a passer - he said fck it, and they ran their regular offense with a gimpy Klein. and it worked bc our DC is a clueless idiot that can't adjust to save his life.

"TCU came out wih a two back set" = "Wash St blitzed a lot more than they did during the regular season"

just 1/2 of them (21). Case makes nice/good plays and then he blows up. Intentional grounding cost us 3. He makes it exciting. You just don't know what you will get. KSate just does not make very many mistakes. Defense had some break downs and they made us pay. Wish the offense could have controlled the ball a little more and score in the red zone more. I wish DJ could have scored on his run and KO Return. Marquise fumble we were luck to get back. Kicking game just lacks confidence. Ouch. Alex King has been awesome however.

  • Nope the three turnover counted for 21 points not 42 congrats you can add. Though take away the 21 points from the final score and what's the score? The turn overs played a big part in this game man!

    tatum

  • Only things different about Mack tonight, was he had a decent haircut and didn't look like a wild man.

And I keep thinking about how well Muschamp is doing now after the UT betrayal.

Does he mean players that redshirted last year or this year's redshirts?

When I read this quote I get the impression that the redshirts can play in the bowl. I did not know that. If true, Mr. Brewer, Mr. Overstreet get ready. We want to see what you've got.

I heard someone make a remark that Davis was absent during the game (sorry I bailed at 5 am here at the start of the fourth quarter...). That's not surprising. He is the long ball element of the game. He had a dismal year last year after Gilbert disappeared (who could deliver a long pass, although not always to the right player) but with David this year he was doing better. Case just cannot throw the ball to a guy like Davis.

Sure, redshirts can play in a bowl game...but it voids their redshirt status just as playing in a regular season game does, Harsin is referring to getting them extra snaps in bowl practice work (like a second spring training). There has been a movement spearheaded by Minnesota's HC, Jerry Kill, to allow redshirt freshmen the opportunity to play in bowl games, but the NCAA hasn't approved such a change as of yet...and probably won't ever do anything sensible.

Thanks, that makes sense. Getting extra snaps is important for everybody. This is a young team. Now if only we had an angry coaching staff that hates OU and everybody else and just wants to be the crap out of them on Saturdays... I like the family atmosphere but at this point I'd rather be feared than loved...
