Coaches speak after game

  • Mack Brown and the Texas coaches spoke with Texas' radio broadcast crew after the game.

    Mack Brown
I think it's simple, you turn the ball over four times and you gain one it's a 100 percent you lose...They rushed the ball better than we did. They forced the turnovers and we didn't. I thought that was the difference in the game.

Defense gave us a chance to win in the end, and offensively we just couldn't get enough done to win.

I'm proud of Case (McCoy), I thought he did a good job when he came win. He gave us a chance to win the ball game. I thought we'd win on the last drive as well. Just disappointed that it didn't work out.

I though [his players] played hard, they didn't give up....I told the guys I thought they played really hard. I didn't think we played well enough on offense to win.

We've got a hard task going to Kansas State. We've just got to regroup on Sunday and get ready to go to Manhattan.

We just got beat by a completely one dimensional unranked Mtn West team at home.

    Screw the coaches.

We're coming off a bye week so we had a chance to work on some things...They had gone from being an empty to being two-back team and we didn't' play that as well as we needed to on the opening drive.

If I look back, almost every drive they scored [Trevone Boykin] made a run on third down to keep a drive alive...I don't think there was a time when we weren't aware of that and didn't have a guy assigned to that...It's a credit to him, he made plays with his feet that were really telling in the game.

I think [Boykin] had about 70 yards rushing and they had about 217, it was the quarterback rushing yards that were crucial in the game.

The story of this season has not yet been written completely, but [Kenny Vaccaro and Alex Okafor], with what they've sacrificed for this team, they're two guys who you couldn't be more proud of with the way they've played.

He's had a whole year to work on things. Give me a break.

And yes the season is over.

On if the change in QBs in the first half was due to health or performance:
It was just that we weren't doing anything offensive and needed to make a change there and get ourselves going and get back into rhythm.

Where we got ourselves into issues was in the red zone with turnovers.

We talked about taking some shots during the week down there, and credit to TCU, they made some plays on those.

As the game went on we continued to have our struggles. You turn the ball over that many times it's difficult to win many games. I thought Case came in and did a good job of moving the ball down the field.

    On abandoning the run:
That's why they're the No. 1 rush defense in the conference. Their goal is to stop the run....We knew that was going to be a physical challenge and we were up to the test there...What hurt us was the turnovers. That's what takes away opportunities for other guys to touch the ball...If we eliminate those I think we have the ability to run the football.

All those seniors on both sides of the ball, we care tremendously about them and what they've given to this university. We wanted to do everything we could to have them go out the right way at home.

  • How is it the fans fault this time, illustrious leader? Please do us all a favor and resign.

  • Yeah Harsin cares so much about our seniors that he gave senior DJ Monroe exactly zero touches tonight.

  • ran the ball down their throat first drive of the game, then got cute in the red zone.

these mid-major coaches need to learn to get out of the players' way sometimes.

That's right, but the change needs to come at a higher level than QB

That set has murdered his defense and multiple opponents used it. I didn't need for Diaz to confirm in print he doesn't have it but at least it's humorous at this point.

On the two back set, Manny said that he was suprised by the formation, and didnt make the proper adjustments in time.

Really, after being burnt by the two back set all year, he's shocked to see it, and couldnt adjust till the second half. And then tcu suprisingly pulls out the qb run play. I bet that blew Manny's mind as well.

    II BIG PERM II

  • They were looking ahead to KSU. Came our flat like against Kansas and let TCU gain a lot if confidence. Unfortunately TCU isn't Kansas.

  • Manny is totally in over his head for one simple reason. He refuses to do the things that need to be done, thinking that surely the next team won't do that, i.e. the next time I head butt a wall it won't hurt. Duke Thomas, Josh Turner, Leroy Scott and Sheroid Evans should be starting if for no other reason because the guys ahead of them can't tackle, so what diffence does it make if they are in the area.
For all the smoke & mirrors about fire zones and being a scheming boy genius, Manny's really just not very good. Got lucky against Cam Newton and he looked like a rising star. Manny has fully earned his firing if it happens, which it probably won't knowing Mack. Dave Campo showed how to coach, and now Peterson dot's the I.
Mack will give Manny one more year because he asked him for a 3-year commitment.
Another poster on another thread commented on Harsin's formations and motion trying to confuse a zone defense in a two deep. That is what's comical. Looks fancy but it has little effect. It wouldn't break my heart if he resigned and went elsewhere.
I know Mack needs to go, but that's not going to happen.

    In other words:

TCU forced Case to throw into quadruple coverage in what was such a courageous play that I'm proud of Case for making that throw. They forced David to throw into double coverage in the end zone in the first half.

There's nothing I could have done, because if your team makes turnovers it is not a coach's fault, it is just the unfortunate thing that happens to players who are excellently coached and prepared and recruited and schooled but gosh darn it's just a whim of the universe and not any kind of reflection on their coach that they chuck the ball to guys wearing the wrong uniform and no one could have even dreamed that was going to happen instead of the planned for ending of that pass being batted into the air where Jaxon would pull it down and we'd go on to win in overtime.

But gosh we played hard against a team that wasn't even trying to get a first down the entire fourth quarter.

  • It's become fingernails to a chalk board listening to Mack's excuse conference.

"The kids were trying" doesn't cut it when you recruit 4 and 5 stars. You either do or you don't. There is no try!

    horn4jc

  • Bierce, that's what I heard as well. You nailed it. It's hard to expect the players to take responsibility when the head coach won't do it himself.
Five years of neglect in evaluation of high school players, taking "good kids" instead of the best players (I am not advocating taking trouble makers), allowing lazy coaches to draw paychecks for poor performance, playing 1's against 2's in practice for years, getting caught up in the celebrity with being HC at Texas and the glory of having won 2 conference championships in 15 years has gotten Mack to where he is right now.
I remember during the 2010 debacle Mack saying he couldn't figure out what was wrong, and he had the nerve to blame the defense when the offense repeatedly sucked. Then he blamed the coaches and said he didn't have any confidence in them. Then after the season he said from player interviews they told him they didn't have confidence in the coaches. Mack said that surprised him. Mack says whatever is convenient and what sounds good at the time to avoid taking heat - like the fanbase is not supporting the team, which is a damn lie. What we are not supporting is a touchy feely coach who can't win big games without dominant players winning the game for him.
Seriously, the four coaches I want to stay are Wyatt, Searles, Giles and Applewhite. Every one of the others has seriously underperformed including Akina. Akina won't make the decision to put the best players in the secondary on the field. The linebackers have no coach, so how can they be expected to get better.

Maybe Texas should start by not stunting against the two-back set?

Bobby- is there any reason a DC at any level would not notice that two back sets have been giving his defenses problems and then be surprised by it this late in a season? Or AT LEAST notice that stunting it is not working? Lets be honest, does Manny get football at this level?
