Case shouldn't be the backup

  • Am I alone in thinking the coaches should just go all-in on getting Brewer or Overstreet ready to play? I think Case's attempts to be leader will fall on deaf ears and Overstreet and Brewer are both more physically talented than Case.

    Just my take.

  • Mack has to make him start at the bottom of the depth chart in the Spring and beat out Brewer. There has to be consequences for the incredibly hypocritical actions from Case when he stood up as a team leader in meetings, and then decided that team rules don't apply to him.

  • I concur. Give practice reps to the future.

    Now, if Ash is hurt on Monday, I'm not opposed to Case starting if he's in fact the best available QB. I just want to spend more time developing Brewer/Overstreet than McCoy.

  • Might surprise some, but I couldn't disagree more. Case (with his warts) is still a McCoy. He's got some moxie to him that I think other players respond to. But that's not the main reason why he should be the backup. He should be the backup because he's gets it. For all his physical shortcomings, he understands his job. If the starter goes down, I want someone that can step in and still execute most of the playbook. That'd be McCoy in just about any offense IMO.

    I agree with this. He is a good backup that gets exposed as a starter. Now if Overstreet or Brewer beats out McCoy then I am cool with that but I am pretty sure McCoy will win the backup QB job.

    Also, no more open QB competition. Make Ash the starter and stick with him.

    Mack did finally state that David has earned the job and will be the guy going forward, but knowing Mack he would like to create a qb controversy.

    I generally agree with Case knowing his job until he remembers that he's Case F'n McCoy, and has, well, lets just call it a moment.

    Brewer needs to show something to take the backup spot away from Case. I'm fairly confident that Case can manage a team to a victory or beat a lesser opponent with non starter reps. I don't know that about Brewer yet. Overstreet would seem to be too much of a project at this point to seriously be considered for the backup role unless Major is taking our offense in a direction that I'm unaware of.

    This, at least at the beginning of the year. As long as we're competing for a championship, the back-up should be whomever gives us the best chance. If at any point we've lost 2-3 games and the chances of a conference championship are lost, then development becomes the higher priority.

    So Case should not suffer any consequences for his actions?

    He needs to beat out Brewer in a head to head competition- something I don't think Case can do.

    If he didn't violate team rules, then he would have been handed the back up job. That can't happen anymore, or the other players will lose respect for Mack.

  • I seriously doubt Case will be on the roster when the team checks in for summer camp. And that works for me.

    This. Someone on this board (and it may have been you) put it perfectly. He has the terrible combination of hero syndrome without the arm to make heroic throws. He also has good quarterback instincts, just not the physical tools to put those into practice a lot of the time. There is a fine line between being confident and cocky, and IMO he lands squarely on the wrong, cocky, side.

    While he made some plays against KU, let's not forget the pass that should have been an interception to win the game. And while he made some plays against TCU, his interception was one of the worst plays from a quarterback I've ever seen. And he just does not have the skill to beat a team like K-State.

  • It's time for either Brewer or Overstreet to step up and start taking primary back-up snaps. Overstreet can run a specialty Wildcat package; while Brewer can get ready to take over the starting role if Ash goes down with injury. It's simply time for McCoy to go away. He can read a defense and complete passes as long as the other team has never has seen him and doesn't play their entire backfield inside of ten yards from the LOS. Then he's toast, and will have brain farts and start throwing to guys in the other jerseys. Brewer has a much stronger arm, just as quick release and will be able to read defenses as well if he gets the reps. Any snaps Case takes during spring and August camps are snaps that Brewer and Overstreet aren't getting and its slowly their progression. Time to move on.

  • Agree with Gordosan. We have to use Oversteet some in a change of pace role and give Brewer a chance to show what he can do, which I believe is no worse than Case. Brewer is accurate and can make the throws and has more escapability than Case. It's time to sort out Ash's eventual replacement so we can determine what we really have at quarterback. That will only be delayed another year with Case as #2. If Ash goes down, Case is taking us nowhere.
    I'm looking forward to seeing a quick, strong armed QB who can run and put pressure on the defense. Overstreet might be that guy given a chance. Some guys are gamers. Some wow you in practice and crumble under game pressure. It's time to fish or cut bait with Overstreet and Brewer and give them both every opportunity to be the next guy at QB.
