Case McCoy didn't seem too happy about the QB situation

  • After the game, Case McCoy was asked by one reporter in the post game press conference about how he felt about coming into the game, leaving, and then coming back in late, and then for his take on what happened on the final drive.

    “Well," McCoy said. "What do you want to know about the back and forth?”

    When the question was clarified for McCoy's opinion on the the way in which the quarterbacks were switched, McCoy declined to comment.

    “I'm not going to answer that first part. But the on the final drive, if you go back and watch, [WR] Cayleb Jones ripped up field on a scramble move. If I just throw the ball, who knows what he does with the ball once it gets in his hands. The ball slipped and floated up in the air. We didn’t take care of the ball when we needed to, and we’ve talked about it all year. You go back and look at any college football game, turnovers are a big deal. We didn’t do what we needed to do in the turnover ratio, and the score showed it."

    I got the feeling it was a team that either truly didn't expect TCU to be as good as they were, or they felt they just straight up got beat by the better team.

    Whose fault would that be? Whose fault is it that his team folded when gifted a shot, if they win out, at a back-door Big XII title?

    And if the pressure really begins to mount, we'll see a post-Iowa State 2010 - blame the coaches and the players.

    What was it? "If one of your players isn't getting it done, we'll replace him. If three of your players aren't getting it done I'll replace you." At what point does his ass get replaced because all of his team isn't getting it done? Or does the buck stop with the assistant coaches?

  • I'm not sure I would have been happy either, probably more because of the idiotic throw I had made to end the game as opposed to how much playing time I got. I will say the decision to put Ash back in in the second half was a head scratcher considering he had demonstrated most of the first half that he just wasn't getting it done at all under center. Not sure why you pull him prior to halftime only to put him right back in to start the second half? That's not exactly a confidence booster for your back-up, which you ended up needing in the end to at least make a game out of it. On that end, I could see him being a little upset.

  • If Ash's ribs were hurt I don't blame Case for being pissed, and he handled it better than I would have. No problem at all with what he said.

    The problem I have isn't that Case isn't happy with the QB situation. If you're a competitor, being in that situation would suck and it should bring out the competitive spirit. It's just that he takes public moments to make snide comments or non comments. He could keep that stuff in house, even campaign for the job privately to the coaches. But he has a track record of making passive aggressive comments in public.

    Ideally, someone in that situation would say something like, "Obviously as a competitor I want to play but I will do whatever the coaches ask me to do in order to help the team win." He doesn't have to mean it but it just keeps a united front.

  • Case didn't seem ready last night, which is out of character. Couldn't believe that haphazard first down throw that was intercepted to end the game. Thought he was beyond that now. It was a freshman-like throw. Threw caution to the wind like he didn't give a damn.

    I wonder if the frustration of being second string has worn him out psychologically, and made him complacent. He may have thought his performance against Kansas should have earned him a longer look as a possible starter, or at least earned him more playing time. Real disappointed in that last throw. Surprisingly irresponsible.

    I watched it too. Seemed to me Case was offended more by the question than the QB situation. But who knows

    So, all the criticism about Case throwing into multiple coverage is just so off target? He was actually looking for Cayleb and the ball got away from him? Where was Cayleb in that mess anyway?

    I was at that game and I can say that after we made it known we were going to pass, TCU mostly shut down the entire secondary. Man would I ever give for Texas to have a Defense like that again. We need to make some serious decisions in the off season.

  • I've been in favor of Ash being the starter and I don't blame what Case said. This and the Kansas game sends mixed messages to the QBs and the team. For Ash, it undermines his ability to rally the troops and it forces him to look over his shoulder. For Case, it's "what do I need to do to get on the field." Case wants to play and no QB signs a letter of intent to be the backup. But I think they're generally okay with it if they are clear what their roles are.

    For the team, it sends a message of if our coaches don't trust the starter, why should we?

    I get that Ash didn't play well in the first half. But putting in Case late in the first half was too soon. But if you were going to do that, then Case should have been the guy from the 2nd half.

    With QBs, you can't be lukewarm. You either win with Ash and lose with Ash, or you win with Case and you lose with Case.

    I generally agree with what you said, but if Ash was injured in the first half, bring Case in when they did makes more sense. The way TCU's d-line and UT's o-line were playing, Joe Montana wouldn't have been much help.

  • Case is not a very good quarterback. When I heard Ash's ribs were injured all those inexplicable turf burners made more sense.
