Haven't heard anything definitive in terms of surgery, but I've heard it's an MCL.

A tear and a sprain are essentially the same thing. They involve tearing of the fiber. There can be varying degrees of both.
A strain is elongation of the tendon/muscle.
We've heard it's a sprain/tear.

If its MCL, I doubt surgery, even with the tear.
