Would you expect an in-his-prime Mike Tyson to win a title fight with both hands tied around his junk?

Ha... Depends... Does he have a muzzle on too?

  • What is the preferred format here? Are we to pretend that you are qualified to judge and then respond accordingly (and pretend that we know what we're talking about as well)? Or do we just point out that it is fine if you have your doubts because it is neither here nor there?

Or you can just share your opinion! Aren't we all arm chair OC's anyways? I know I am, and ain't no one stopping my O!

  • It's been said a number of times already, but it's still too early to judge him. Personnel left a lot to be desired in some spots, and you also have to keep in mind that this was our first year in his system. How we perform a couple years from now when (if) we get better at certain positions, he has his entire offense installed and our players have been in it for a few years, we will have a better idea of whether or not he was a good hire.

  • For one (myself) who posts regardless of what others think (down votes) I appreciate your honesty. I get what your are saying and hope you are wrong. But to be fair he has had only one year and there is no doubt he is burning inside to make things right. You need to understand that if he does not make it at UT he does not make it period. I feel he will be get Ash to calm down and process more smoothly. Once that happens everything will work out like %^&*() through a goose. Our line will be better and we will have a stable of backs.

I'm going to hold off judgement until he has some experience at key spots. I think ideally, he'd love to avoid as many trick plays as we used this past year. We used them because we weren't very good.

What concerns me the most are his passing game concepts.

    Detail these concerning passing concepts.

Actually, Harsin mentioned not being able to get to trick plays in certain games because the base plays weren't working.

I don't think that is an indication he'd like to run more trick plays every week.

We also need to realize that there will likely be a difference in philosophy from last year to this year. Trick plays were used to create explosive plays that our passing game could not. The goal this year will be to create some explosiveness through the air without having to use trickery.

    BhamHorn

  • We had to use trick plays this year. Without them, we wouldn't score.

We're all in love with Manny Diaz right now, but fact of the matter is that Diaz has talent to work with. Harsin does not. If we're still constantly relying on trick plays and Jaxon Shipley is still our leading TD passer comes year 3, then pound on the panic button. For now, I think Harsin's doing as good a job as can be expected.

It isn't so much route combinations as it is what we do overall. It seems like to me we motion our fullbacks and tight ends the most. Our WRs rarely motion for the passing game. It's a show game and I think it makes us easier to defend in this area. The flip side of that is I think all of the motion and mis-direction we put out there for the running game is fantastic. We seem to do so much more with our running game. Jet sweeps, pistol, diamond, wildcat, etc.

  • OP is way off. He got enough juice out of a turnip to get 8 wins with a true freshman or a only 15 yards or less passer, a true freshman at TACKLE, best WR and RB injured, All in all, he basically had a empty cupboard on offense. What do you think he can do with a competent QB, seasoned OL, stable of RBs and WRs, and a top 5 defense???

  • I haven't read the thread so this may have already been said.....

I don't think his offense is gimmicky at all. I think he wants to run with power, pass with accuracy, take shots down the field and mix in some wrinkles. He has specifically stated that the gimmick plays serve multiple purposes like keeping the kids interested, but they aren't the base of the offense. I feel like we've covered this all before.

Signatures are stupid. You should block them.

    Ditto that.

  • I really don't have a problem with his schemes, but just some situational calls. Like when we were inside the five against Okie Lite and were having success running the ball. Why on God's green Earth would we run a PA roll out pass that Ash would have to execute with less space to work with? Maybe he thought Ash could pull it off and it'd be a big boost to the kid's confidence, but he didn't and it wasn't. That situation and a couple of the situations on 3rd and short against Mizzou (but of course by that time, Fozzy, Malcolm, and Joe were out). But nobody's perfect.

So I guess all in all I'd have to disagree. I think what he had to work with factored into the playcalling a great deal. I expect marked improvement next season with a more solid line, a more experienced QB, and healthy skill position players.

  • We need to give Harsin more time.He did a great job with a bunch of clunky volkswagons at Boise. So lets see what he can do with a garage full of Ferrari,s.I think in time we will have an offense that gives the rest of the confrence bad dreams to scheme for.Patience is the key word.hookem

  • I think we have to give it another year but I also think your concern is legit and have had the same concerns

    RoyalwithCheese

  • I think he gets another year before the real judgement begins.

He's got to develop Ash. That's No. 1. A big part of how he's judged next season will come down to how much Ash improves.

This. Harsin is on record that the gadgets are used with specific purpose to break established tendencies.

I expect Harsin will get back to a power run game with a heavy dose of intermediate passing and play action. I'm sure we'll see some read option, wildcat and misdirection in addition to trickeration to keep defenses off balance but the power run is likely to be the staple.

In addition to your post I'd just like to put out there the idea that we had some Volkswagons of our own on the roster. Manny didn't have as much of a problem with that and y'all saw how his defense looked the last half of the year. Harsin's success here will have to take place after he gets the kind of guys he wants to run his system. With our defense we can allow ourselves to be patient, but this next season's improvement or lack thereof will be huge. Everyone expected a rebuilding effort last season. Not anymore. Some people will be expecting a positive trend in the win column. I'll be one of them.

Every time I see one of his posts, I want to link to the "English, motherf****r, do you speak it?" clip from Pulp Fiction.

(I don't only because I can't find the three-second clip without the full spelling and I know the mods are trying to limit the sketchy language as much as possible.)
