Breaking News: Barnett

Remember, Monroe spent all spring last year at receiver.

Goodwin has never really had an off-season to dedicate to football (and may never have that given how good he is in track).

My view is that we really shouldn't count too much on these guys. I want them to be home run hitters for the football team, but DJ has been around for awhile ( even if the coaches didn't know it), and Goodwin is world class in track. If Spring Practice is not critical to the athlete, tell that to the 85 or so guys sweatin like hogs for 3-4 weeks. In fact, I bet you a cold beverage that Goodwin ain't on the team this fall. Wyatt ain't a track coach, and when his guys show up for hot August practice, he's gonna know who bled and sweat for him the last few months. My point in all of this is the way forward for this team is the measure of the heart, not the the profile.

Yes I'm sure Mack could foresee that Marcus Davis would have to leave and Barnett would suffer 2 knee injuries.

It is my understanding that Marcus Davis did not have to leave. He was not asked to leave. He was not kicked off. He left on his own accord. Marcus had his charges dropped and did not feel comfortable continuing his career at Texas based on the actions of Mack.

And that happenned last year. We should have looked to the JUCO ranks as AW was a likely defection as well.

And whoever thinks Cobbs is an answer is crazy. He does not have the body type to be a corner.

Based on what actions of Mack? Arrests are public record and I remember seeing his mugshot in AAS the next morning. Mack wasn't the one DWI with pot in the car and he feels as much embarrassment as the player when the headlines come out.

  • I don't think Monroe or Goodwin are less committed. They're just great track athletes. It doesn't mean they aren't committed to football, they're just good at something else. And they're dang good at it. You can bet that if I had to choose between competing in the olympics in 2012 and playing spring ball, I'd choose the opportunity to run for my country. But that's just me.

While it's probably more noble to train for the Olympics, bypassing Spring practices for track does make them less committed to football. I don't know how else you can get around that?

MK-Too early for sky is falling. UT's defense will prob actually be better than last year and esp considering the offense is likely to be better. ranking wise the defense wasnt as bad as it looked last season and we know a big reason why they had so many issues at times. I also have no problem putting young..solid talent out there that will be coached up properly by this staff

I didn't say the sky is falling. I just think our defense lost too many significant players, combined with a brand new scheme, to be better than we were last year. The only plus I see is that the offense should be better, which will likely help the defense until they get some experience.

  • I don't think the issues we had at DT (next to Randall) could have been more glaring last year. I don't think we have been that weak up the middle since the Mackovic days. That being said, I think that we will see Dorsey or maybe even Daniels step up and solidify the position. Overall, I think our front 7 will be stronger next year while our secondary will be weaker. It is a lot easier to hide a weak secondary than a weak front seven. While I hated them, the Philly Eagles defenses of the Buddy Ryan era showed this. They had 1 good corner but the rest of their secondary was average at best and they were a dominant defense. The Steelers only have 1 really good player in the secondary IMHO but they had a great defense last year.

  • Monroe is a million dollar with a .10 cent brain. I can understand Goodwin, he is a legitimate olympic hopeful. I actually won't be surprised if he doesn't play football next fall in preperation. Monroe is a different story.

  • Any chance we see Hills move to the secondary given the current logjam at RB with Brown arriving for fall practice?
