Breaking News: Barnett

Could Adrian Phillips be moved to corner?

Watching him in HS, I would be surprised. He would have a chance in a zone scheme with help over the top.

Don't think he has that flip the hips recovery speed ideally desired.

Conventional wisdom says yes, but that means Bryant Jackson needs to find the field for them to get more speed on the field at safety.

As long as there's an open competition, this would hardly be a surprise. Really hoping to see #27 out there early and often.

Is the right knee the one he had surgery on his freshman year? If that's two surgeries on the same knee, his chances of playing again are pretty low.

    I'll ask again...

Eryon Barnett is out for season with right knee surgery. The hits keep coming at corner.

That leaves Carrington Byndom, AJ White and Quandre Diggs as the only true corners.

Two true sophomores with marginal experience and a true freshman. Wow.

I'm shooting the messenger on this one. Down voting for you Burton!!!

Maybe Kenny Vaccaro's conversion to cornerback will happen sooner rather than later?

Jammer did it, why not Kenny?

I really don't think Vacarro has the short area quickness and change of direction to be a Big 12 corner. Keep him at Safety. I think the staff will have to look at some other options. Obviously Diggs and Turner will both have to play.

that just doesn't seem wise for Monroe as far as his football career goes.

Total head scratcher IMO. He needs to be playing football this spring.

  • MK-Too early for sky is falling. UT's defense will prob actually be better than last year and esp considering the offense is likely to be better. ranking wise the defense wasnt as bad as it looked last season and we know a big reason why they had so many issues at times. I also have no problem putting young..solid talent out there that will be coached up properly by this staff

  • rantCould this be where we can put Cobbs? I read awhile back that Vaccaro was considering going to CB.

  • This is sad for Barnett.
Remember though, Barnett played very limited in 6 games last year, mostly on special teams. Hardly saw the field as a DB. I understand the concern about losing him, but he has not been a contributor so far and is not yet a proven commodity. I suspect DeMarco Cobbs will get a look at corner.

  • This is doing an effective job of dashing my already unrealistic hopes that Blake Gideon will be benched forever.

On the upside, this pretty much forces Diggs to play and play early at CB. Which is great news, because we won't end up wasting half his eligibility tinkering with him on offense and defense.

  • Sydney,
Diggs was going to play early and often at CB anyway.

That is correct. Big 12 track championships or something this week. That's a big one for his development.

Bobby, isn't it a little unrealistic to expect big things from Goodwin and or Monroe when these guys spend spring in another sport? God bless em for running track, but the guys in the pads are the committed ones. My question to you is should or will the coaches put their energy and motivation on the guys who are more committed? Do you think the coaches will or should let these two guys know that they go to the back of the line for fall practice ---- behind all the guys who competed in the Spring for starting positions.

DJ Monroe is only out this weekend through the Big12 championships. He's as committed as any other player. I'm ready for our coaches to finally show a commitment to him.

    Gideon to corner.

  • You'd have thought Diggs would have been playing early anyway, but at this point I don't take anything for granted in regards to what many consider common sense personnel decisions. There was a lot of talk during his recruitment about where he'd end up playing.

    You can't teach speed.

    GoingCoastal

  • You can teach zone, although we haven't done it that well through the years.

Look for lots of zone this year.

great recruiting mack. the lack of depth at OL and corner is unexplainable.

Yes I'm sure Mack could foresee that Marcus Davis would have to leave and Barnett would suffer 2 knee injuries.

    NLeininger

  • I guess you can't teach work ethic or intelligence either. I have read repeatedly --- not my opinion --- that DJ does not practice hard and can't seem to master the playbook. Goodwin did not have a good year while everyone predicted greatness. We can choose to blame coaches for the shortcomings ----- we can also question whether thest two gentlemen actually give a rats..a......s about improving their football skills. You are right , they can't teach speed. The coaches also can't teach them anything else if they aren't there for practice. Ask a Mike Davis or a Darious White who should get the "love" after spring practice...... If you want to be a team...... you gotta be on the team........

    CatoTheElder

  • Remember, Monroe spent all spring last year at receiver.

Goodwin has never really had an off-season to dedicate to football (and may never have that given how good he is in track).

That can't be true. There were fewer than 10 plays in the Greg Davis book.

  • Fire zone blitzes usually require someone to play man to man in the secondary, should be interesting this fall.
