Breaking Down Swaim's Game

Hookem.com checks in with Butte College head coach Jeff Jordan to get some in-depth info on Texas' newest 6-foot-5, 250-pound tight end commit Geoff Swaim.

  • Great read Blake, now I understand the offer and the commitment a little more. The thing that sticks out is his versatility, but more importantly the fact that he doesn't care whether he's trucking dudes all game long and doesn't get any catches. That's a mentality that's been lacking at TE here for a little while.

  • I love getting a mauler who can sneak in a couple dumps a game. Great pick up IMO.

  • Sounds like an extremely competent TE. I like how confident his coaches are about his abilities. Hope this staff doesn't give up on using him just a little in the passing game. Seems like a guy that can help take the running game to the next level though. Good pick up.

  • The offense he is a part of looks very similar to ours when it comes to motioning tightends. I'm actually getting excited about this one now.

  • I would be willing to 'bet the house' that our stable of RBs are excited about what
Swaim adds to the run game...plus, no LBs or safeties can 'go to sleep' on him as
a viable check-down just as will be Gray and others...NO doubt this will be a plus
for our pass game & Harsin obviously knows this...

We have NOT had a blocking TE who has good hands in a very long time,
so I share others excitement about what Swaim brings to the table!

  • "They needed a guy that can be physical and set the edge, and that's what I do".

    Johnathan Gray approves this message.

  • Texas is acquiring players with a physical, nasty attitude at a rapid clip. I like it. A lot.

A TE that can set the edge and on 3rd and 3, play action and toss a 5 yard pass for a 1st down. Makes sense in a 2 TE set that Harsin likes to employ.

I still like Beau Sandland but not sure we have the #s this year. We do lose 2 TEs and are bringing in 2 so far. Poehlmann, Grant, Matthews are Sr and Daniels, Onyegbule and Moss are all ?able to return next year. We can count Swain as a FB and Sandland as a TE. Smythe, Swain and Sandland would be a great set of TEs/FBs to add to who we have.

  • Why couldn't he transfer in for this season? Does the NCAA have a requirement that jucos play 2 years?

    hooked3333

  • very good ?.
i know that there is NOT a ncaa requirement that a juco play 2 years. I agree, get him here for the summer or fall and let him play!

No, there is no NCAA requirement like that. But he may not have enough credits to qualify as a transfer student under UT admission guidelines.

  • I could be wrong but i didnt think there was a minimum number or classes(just means if he will come in as a Fr or Soph or Jr). i think its more about the grades(not saying Swaim has any grade issues, i have no idea).

I was curious about this so I looked it up at utexas.edu. Excerpt below

    ...Transferable Coursework Requirement

To be eligible to apply for transfer admission, you must have graduated from high school or earned a GED and have completed or be currently enrolled in the remaining coursework to earn at least 30 semester hours of required transferable coursework....

Looks like you need 30 hours of transferable credit.

not worthy of a downvote. i think the "nasty attitude" someone apparently didn't like.

just like you, i want want players w/ the "i'm going to beat your @$$" attitude. someone angry and hungry. ON the field that is. this is not this fAG SWAG lame movement in College Station. It's more of, "don't look over here again, or you won't like it."

    TexAus

  • After watching his clips I actually see him lining up in the backfield leading the way for B, B & G.

If you're right about the "why" then someone needs to rinse the sand out. Someone much smarter than me once said football is a game played by angry men. Texas has been missing this attitude, on the field, too often the past few years. I am very pleased that the staff seems to be once again placing a premium on that character trait in recruiting.

  • Kid has great film for the purpose. Flats knocks people into yesterday. Likes doing it too. These are the moves that will set Texas apart. It means the world when a team can make 3rd downs and critical conversions on 4th down. It will also help red zone efficiency, where we were not very good the last year.

Hope the coaches consider a goal-line jumbo (fridge) package with a DT in the lead and another DT carrying.

Gave ya an upvote to make up for your earlier downvote. I agree I don't see why you were downvoted either.

Good point. Assuming he has passed all of his classes, i think after a full 2 semesters and a summer session he could transfer for this fall. 30 hrs is not that much.

  • This may be too pie in the sky since we haven't seen him in the position yet, but I am sort of hoping that Bluiett plays that role this year allowing DJ Grant and McFarland to hit the seam and catch the ball downfield. Ideally both or one of Grant and McFarland learn to block DEs this fall and can be dual threat so that we can have them on the field the whole time along with a better blocker. But if Bluiett could serve the role of a good blocker -- he certainly has the attitude -- and someone to whom Ash could dump the ball we might already have a partial answer on campus.

Have to see it to believe it, of course.

ETA: Plus, that allows Poehlman to return to tackle. We need tackles.
