Bohls: State of UT athletics? Dodds promises ‘good years again'

  • Bohls: State of UT athletics? Dodds promises ‘good years again’ | www.statesman.com

DeLoss Dodds mulled the question for a moment, then seized upon it. Just what is the state of a Longhorns union that from the outside looks fractured or at least frayed at the edges?

  • Great stats #10 overall program & #1 in revenue. Do the AD's not realize ROI could be even higher with more successful programs? If 2013 isn't a dramatic improvement, we could see the return of the early 90's where fans were apathetic & not selling out the stadium.

  • There is value in what Dodds says. Just because Texas is not where Texas wants to be doesn't invalidate every word he says.

I'm not defending the performance of the athletic department by any means but distegarding everything he says is not fair either.

    Two incredibly troubling quotes.

Agree....but it is very difficult to cut thru the cloud of the incompetence in performance to hear the words of his that are true. He is motivated 90% by money IMO. I cannot get that out of my mind when listening/reading his BS.

The problem isn't his words, its his actions.

He plans for every problem to magically fix itself without making any changes. Third straight dissappointing football season? "Mack can stay as long as he wants." Men's basketball in a tailspin and looking completely lost? "Trust Barnes."

Not to mention Plonsky's mess of a women's department.

Does he realize that change must be enacted before it can occur?

  • I'm honestly beginning to think that the situation with Dodds is going down the same road as the situation with Jerry Jones in Dallas. The fact that he's 73 and has no plans on retiring means that he will probably hold this position until his death, which means a lot more bad decisions for us in the future.

The first one by plonsky I understand. she should have been fired long ago and for reasons that are likely political or legal she is still around.

So, you are saying that it is almost impossible to hold a gay woman accountable for performance?

That quote from Deloss is maddening beyond words. So I guess Alabama's coaches and players are being harmed by all those MNCs they are winning. Texas shouldn't be mediocre and it is. That all falls at the feet of Deloss and Plosnky. I can't wait for their final days to happen. The Barnes quote is also maddening. He's changing the culture and being given time for that. You mean the culture he created by recruiting one and dones and not even taking those players to decent levels in the Tournament? Is that like the culture Mack created that he's now being allowed to change yet again?

    Deloss is the problem.

I'm starting to garner a better appreciation for Mack. To have the success he's had under the watch of such a mind numbingly incompetent AD is awfully impressive.

I am of the opinion the entire athletic department needs a cleanse regardless whether his words have merit or not.

Also his quote to end the article is clubhouse leader for dumbest quote of the year.

  • Isn't the bigger picture here that both ADs agree to a sit down interview with AAS / Bohls (how often does that happen?), on the very day that the Major Applewhite news hits the media (later that evening)?

I find it interesting that the interview was on Feb 1st, but it isn't published until Feb 11, with no mention of Applewhite in the article.

Also, no coincidence that Dodds is selling hope and the future just 2 weeks before the Longhorn Foundation donations are due.

As Bobby said, no need to deride Dodds fo everything he says, but to discuss the future of Texas athletics and not mention conference realignment, the future of the LHN, BOR issues, and several other macro issues seems odd to me. Not sure what Bohl's goal was with this article.

Since the Applewhite story hadn't gone public yet, A) Bohls obviously didn't know to ask about it and B) the UT spin machine wasn't going to release it that way.

Bohls, as much as the people bash him, has some perks for covering the Longhorns for as long as he has. He's one of the few people that can get a sit-down with the higher-ups on occasion.

  • His comments like the Mizzou one and those on realignment - "We didn't start this...but if we need to finish it, we'll finish it" -- used to draw a smirk. Now, they're empty.

The upside, and I thought the same when Kansas almost beat Texas in October, is that enough of this embarrassment will provoke a house-cleaning. Every successful executive or commissioner or AD has a wandering eye toward Austin, knowing the job should open soon. Absent a major infractions scandal, I don't think one event does the trick. Still, the current administration doesn't release a State of the Union like this if they aren't worried about their window closing.
