Bohls: Gilbert chosen starter and has been told so

  • Whether it's true or not, I'm still a little surprised so many of you think this is really an open competition. Gilbert has gotten the most snaps since day 1 and that won't change no matter how bad he plays. We've witnessed 13 years of Mack's tendencies and some of you think he's all of the sudden changed because he was forced to fire all those coaches after last season.

I'm expecting GG to start against Rice and it's going to take multiple k-state games until Mack feels enough pressure to bench him for good.

he's usually right though. one circumstance is debateable.

  • You guys really believe Harsin would leave his home and come to Texas to install his offense and let Mack tell him who to play? I find that very hard to believe. Bohls likes to stir the pot and you guys make it very easy for him.

Hope not. Connor shouldve seen this when he committed to Texas. Everyone knew about this. The only question was if GG would play his senior yr.

Connor knew that the original plan was to have the 2 years of separation but that was when everyone thought Gilbert would have tremendous success and he hasn't. He should be given every opportunity to win the job.

he has gone from offensive coordinater at Boise State to co-offensive coordinater with Applewhite at TEXAS. just my opinion, but i think Mack's calling the shots. it has always been that way, agree with him or not.

We've been told it is open, period.

And at least 1 of the QBs has been told the same thing.

Signatures are stupid. You should block them.

  • We need depth at QB. No guy should come thinking they will start as a Fresh or Soph. It is too big a risk. It paid off for us with Colt (kind of), but really hurt this last year.

No. I know that sounds fun to the fans, but it's not how it works on this one.

Harsin never had to leave Boise State..he loved it there and had turned back big jobs in the past. Alabama tried to get him in a few seasons ago..he's turned back other interest...hell even LSU tried to get him after Texas had offered him the job..before he accepted. Point is I dont think the guy was in a desperate need to move to another program where he would come to Texas with no say in what QB runs his offense. Some insiders have heard he has heavy say in who the guy will be...which is logical

  • Mack is not in the same position he was in a couple of years ago. He does not have the same leverage with the administration and far less rope to hang himself with. That being said I believe that GG will start the season as the #1 guy. I have said this numerous times. However I have also said that he has very little rope to work with this year. Mack is not concerned with getting fired. Mack is truly concerned with his legacy. He knows, and rightfully so, that GG will get pulled quicker than you can yell fire on a repeat of last year in any similar form. I believe by the OU game we will see another guy take the reins if GG looks weak in the least. I have always been a Wood fan and I believe two things will bear true this year. We will confirm GG is not the guy and he does not have the "it" factor and Wood will either be the next guy or we are in for a bumpy year. As much as I love the McCoy name he just does not have the same intangibles as Wood. We will see.

  • I think Gilbert will be the starter next year, and that we will see a huge improvement. I loved Colt, but he wouldn't have been ablle to do the things he did without Jordan, Quan, and Limas. I think Garrett deserves a chance with the new offense, and I trust Mack, Applewhite, and Harsin to make the right decision. I really get tired of all the bashing!!

You're either blindly optimistic or you haven't been paying close enough attention to how this program works.

Mack is a fantastic coach and I don't want anyone else right now, but he can be very stubborn and tends to be set in his ways in a lot of areas. He's made several bone headed decisions over the past decade, so it's naive to think this situation can't end up the same way.

    Is that you Mrs. Gilbert????

  • Very few QBs could have done a good job in the offense last season, everything was just horrible. That said, a drunken idiot, i.e. me at kick-off, could tell more than a quarter of the time where Gilbert was going with the ball as soon as a passing play was imminant. Often he would spend a split second longer on his presnap reads on the WR he wanted to go to, especially with quick hitches and slants. Hell for the K State game I called an inside slant interception at my local dive bar before the snap, guess what happened. I won't even go into the fact that he stares down WRs then takes forever in his wind up (why Byrant Jackson had an interception in the spring).

People will talk about leadership and often want to see a player being vocal. It doesn't really matter what a QB does on the sideline when he doesn't produce between the whistles.

We'll find out who the starter is going to be probably just past midway through summer. Mack won't say anything. It'll be the QB that is "enforcing" summer passing sessions. Players will rally behind the QB telling them to show up if they believe he is the guy. I pray to God/Buddha/Alah/Shiva/Oden that he learns to read a defense this summer if in fact this rumor is true.

We haven't talked to the same person Kirk has spoken to.

That doesn't confirm or deny anything he wrote.

    bohls' source is shaggybevo.com ;)

Got to give Bohls credit for a very, very successful troll.

The all time leader in wins and namesake of my precious 2 year old baby boy could have done what he did with whatever WR you put 5-10 yards away from him. No one is bashing Gilbert. This is objective criticism. We had a heartfelt conversation about bashing last week. Mods and all. This is not bashing.

Mack shouldn't answer any questions of Bohls the rest of the time he is head coach. It is one thing to try and get a story, but this information serves absolutely no purpose. He makes it seem like Mack is being anything but honest with the other QBs and dishonest is one thing that I do not think anyone could accuse Mack of. The fact that he even mentions that Mack and Harsin do not want the other QBs to stop working hard just shows what a chump he is being.

I would expect the hometown reporter to still ask tough questions, but I also expect the hometown reporter to not act like a jackwagon at every turn when reporting on the team.

I don't believe I could have expressed my sentiments any better.
I have tried to lay off Bohls because of some of our mods association with him, however it is extremely difficult to ignore his personal vendetta against Mack and the program. IMO, he has certified himself as a total wash-out as a "journalist" with this article and has zero credibility. He feels Texas "owes" him something because of his position. They don't, and I'd love it if they banned him from all news conferences.
As you said, what purpose does this "story" serve other than to re-kindle the embers of the Garrett Gilbert debate. Glad to see the University came out and called: "bull-sh@#".

People, including myself, want Wood to get a fair shot at winning the starting job, nothing more. We've seen what GG gives, slow delivery, bad footwork, no quickness/foot speed, below average accuracy.

Wood got almost no playing time in the spring game but there was one specific play where the rush got in on him that he displayed quickness and agility in getting out of the pocket and making a positive play out of nothing.

When your qb can't complete passes and make positive plays with his arm, might as well have someone back there who can keep the positive offensive momentum going with his legs.

Like Urban Meyer said when talking about Texas, you have to have an athletic QB or a homerun threat. I like Connor's quickness.

I hope that what you wrote here is true that the summer passing sessions and leadership skills of one qb guides Mack into the best decision for our team. Both Vince Young and Colt McCoy were leaders of the team. So far Gilbert is not- stress on so far.
