Bohls: Gilbert chosen starter and has been told so

  • Gosh durn it Bohls! I don't mind it if someone who regularly talks to football players knows. But now Connor, McCoy and Ash know thanks to you Mr. Bolhs. The humanity.

  • It might make sense if the coaches reviewed every practice over the spring and decided that GG was the best out of the 4. You can't go into fall camp with 4 guys taking snaps at qb. If Harsin and Applewhite decided that GG is the best then so be it.

Not really, he has every Longhorn board talking about him, this article and posting a link to it. In the media that is known as "mission accomplished"

I always thought it was going to be that way. I just hope the staff doesn't stick with him no matter what happens. I'm just hopin for a short leash.

I know it's never been your style but if you're hoping for something how about hoping he's good?

Mack shouldn't answer any questions of Bohls the rest of the time he is head coach. It is one thing to try and get a story, but this information serves absolutely no purpose. He makes it seem like Mack is being anything but honest with the other QBs and dishonest is one thing that I do not think anyone could accuse Mack of. The fact that he even mentions that Mack and Harsin do not want the other QBs to stop working hard just shows what a chump he is being.

I would expect the hometown reporter to still ask tough questions, but I also expect the hometown reporter to not act like a jackwagon at every turn when reporting on the team.

He's a reporter reporting. That's his job as a sports journalist, and he did it here in an objective way. Just passing along what he knows. I was at the spring game and didn't see any other QB make enough of an impression to beat out Gilbert. Sure we still have the fall camp, but the burden of proof is on the other quarterbacks who haven't shown anything.

  • Feels like such a Bohls move to make shit like this up just to stir up the fanbase. Feels like such a Mack move to anoint the position to whichever player he has a crush on.

So torn. Just going to expect a black hole from the QB position in 2011, and if it's anything better, i'll feel content.

I hope Mack's handling of the situation doesn't cost us Connor Wood. That'll set the program back another couple of years IMO.

Hope not. Connor shouldve seen this when he committed to Texas. Everyone knew about this. The only question was if GG would play his senior yr.

Not sure Gilbert has shown enough to be handed the job at this point.

  • We haven't talked to the same person Kirk has spoken to.

That doesn't confirm or deny anything he wrote.

Hey Bobby - reading between the lines then, what exactly have your sources said? Is the position still wide open, or is the staff looking to narrow the field to give Wood or Ash a chance to move forward with transfer plans?

Of course not. He's terrible. But he will be the starter against Rice. Bohls is just reporting but everyone's shooting the messenger.

  • Thats because every year Brown tells everybody this bs about how its wide open yet anybody who has been around know this is far from the truth

That's a very depressing statement given how adamant you have previously been to the contrary.

  • Like most on the board I felt that Mack was going to start Gilbert and like many I wanted Wood to be our starter. I think it is fair to say Gilbert is at least a step or two down from McCoy. All that I do know is that folks who do know Mack Brown feel that under the smooth talking country boy "public face" is a cold logical man. As Yogi Berra once said It aint over till its over. I expect Mack has fixed the big problem from last year and UT might not be a top 5 team this year but I suspect they will be in two or three years.

  • I think that Kirk is right. Making Gilbert your starter is the politically smart thing for Harsin to do. If Gilbert plays well great, if he doesn't then you gave him every opportunity and you replace him during the season.

As an aside, a very well respected coach/talent evaluator recently told me that his rank of the Texas qbs was 1)Gilbert 2)Ash and that he did not particularly care for either Wood or McCoy.

"Don't know. Never had one" -- D. Royal-Mack Brown how to coach a team after a losing season

not really. Why would Texas be telling any QB this early they have the job? especially with transfer options at stake. We have a long time before the season starts and a lot of practice this summer and in the fall before someone takes the field for real. Its simply absurd to think Mack no only has told Gilbert he has the job, but that the rest of the team including the other guys wouldnt find out yet its claimed Texas wants them to think the QB competition is still on. Bohls is so stupid and why he keeps trying to stir the UT fanbase pot I have no idea. He knows this will create MAJOR controversy and he doesnt care. Austin deserves better

There's far too many examples from the past 10 seasons that make the notion that Mack has already chosen GG to start seem perfectly legitimate, NOT ABSURD at all.

except Harsin and Mack have flat out said the competition is wide open and a choice likely wont be made until after the summer and through the fall practice. Bobby and other insiders have heard its open as well. How exactly does it make sense for both coaches to be saying that to their team and yet secretly behind the scenes telling Gilbert its his job this far in advance? You think they wouldn't want all these QB's to bust ass through the summer and fall to improve their game? There is simply no reason for them to announce there is a starter at this point, and Bohls is basically calling these coaches liars. What is their to gain by putting on this elaborate charade including telling one player something and others something else? I dont buy Mack, Harsin, and Applewhite would act this way

exactly. i wouldn't answer jack sh!t to Bohl's if i were Mack Brown. he has taken shot after shot after shot(unfair or not) at Mack for over a decade. he wants anguish for Texas because it creates a story for him, and he just loves to rub it in when it's bad.

here's how Mack should handle the next question from him. don't answer, ask in response- "Kirk, can you touch your penis to your @$$hole?" if no, "get back to me when you can." if yes, "good. now go f*ck yourself with it, because that's the last honest comment you're getting out of me as long as i'm here."
