Bohls: Gilbert chosen starter and has been told so

  • "Junior-to-be quarterback Garrett Gilbert has been chosen as the Texas starter and been told so, one source who regularly talks to the football players told me, but Mack Brown and Bryan Harsin don’t want Connor Wood, Case McCoy and David Ash to stop working as hard as possible and haven’t made any public announcement on the starting position. I think it’d be smarter to show strength and confidence in Gilbert by announcing he’s the guy, which most all of us expect."

9 things and one crazy prediction

Nine things while I got ya: Not as surprised that the poor-sport Lakers committed two classless fouls in the late going of their shocking, fourth consecutive loss to the Mavericks as I was that Ron Artest wasnt involved in either....

Ha, love it. Does anyone really thing barring injury that GG will not start.

I always thought it was a near certainty, but wouldn't a little competition help the guy? When's the last time he faced any real competition? 9th grade?

  • I hope Mack's handling of the situation doesn't cost us Connor Wood. That'll set the program back another couple of years IMO.

    No. The only questions are:

    1) how poorly will he have to play and for how long before someone else gets a shot; and
    2) if the criteria for #1 are met, who gets the first shot?

It would suck, but with Ash and Brewer, it's not dire.

Uh, what? He'd still have 2 years of eligibility when GG is done.

  • Mack shouldn't answer any questions of Bohls the rest of the time he is head coach. It is one thing to try and get a story, but this information serves absolutely no purpose. He makes it seem like Mack is being anything but honest with the other QBs and dishonest is one thing that I do not think anyone could accuse Mack of. The fact that he even mentions that Mack and Harsin do not want the other QBs to stop working hard just shows what a chump he is being.

I would expect the hometown reporter to still ask tough questions, but I also expect the hometown reporter to not act like a jackwagon at every turn when reporting on the team.

    I agree.

I also don't completely buy this. Call me a hater but I just don't understand why Gilbert would start, besides the fact he has a year of game experience. But it was awful game experience.

I have not seen Gilbert (besides the spring game), but maybe he is shining during practice. Or the other guys aren't.

  • "...one source who regularly talks to the football players told me..."

That is about as weak as a source can get. Unattributed, clearly not a coach, maybe not even a trainer or manager type. I essentially interpret that as being as meanigful as anything I could daydream about. I don't believe it is true, although that doesn't mean Gilbert won't start against Rice. What possible advantage could there be to whispering to Gilbert that he is the starter, but not telling anybody else? He may be the frontrunner, but I still think the job can be taken away from him. The sooner it is, the sooner we can begin the climb back to top 10 status.

I meant it more towards the fact that Wood becomes upset that he's not getting a fair shot at the qb spot and transfers. Not that his eligibility would be used up. I know the original plan was for him to have the 2 year separation between himself and Gilbert but Gilbert has done nothing to show that he deserves the job without having to beat out the other guys.

As for GG allegedly being named the starter, can we at least wait until fall practice, or reports of unfavorable 7 and 7's before we start rewadding that particular pair of panties?

not really. Why would Texas be telling any QB this early they have the job? especially with transfer options at stake. We have a long time before the season starts and a lot of practice this summer and in the fall before someone takes the field for real. Its simply absurd to think Mack no only has told Gilbert he has the job, but that the rest of the team including the other guys wouldnt find out yet its claimed Texas wants them to think the QB competition is still on. Bohls is so stupid and why he keeps trying to stir the UT fanbase pot I have no idea. He knows this will create MAJOR controversy and he doesnt care. Austin deserves better

  • Like most of you I am skeptical of Bohls.

But if this is true that we already selected the starter without fall competion let's talk about our short list for the next head coach because Mack will be done at Texas. Even he cannot survive another year like last year.

I simply cannot believe that Mack is this stubborn though. At some point his survival instincts would kick in and he would play the best QB.
