Bobby Bowden Syndrome

  • I have a close friend at FSU on the academic support staff. Earlier this year we talked for quite a while about how long it took for the Seminoles to finally move on from Bobby. He said, the majority of the fans wanted to believe that BB could bring them back. Those at the top appeared powerless to implement the change. Recruiting suffered as more and more guys FSU use to sign started going to UF. Then the Gators won a couple of MNCs and they were no longer the place players wanted to go in Florida. Right now they are finally getting back to the top 10 but only after suffering for a decade. They actually had to fire the patriarch of their program. The really sad point to it all is that no one had the guts to do it till the pain of not being relevant became just too much to take.

Texas is now at that crossroads. The men who comprise the decision makers have a decision in front of them. Do something now or allow the capitol for college football to be relocated to College Station. It's 1984 all over again. I am convinced that if Texas had hired a top coach in the mid 80s things might have been different. Do they have the willingness to move in a different direction? I doubt it. Just like that Thanksgiving night in 1984 aggy won and we were left at the crossroad.

One bright light in all of this that gives me hope is that BB never really showed the level of pain Mack is showing right now. I really do believe that there is an above average chance that MB has coached his last game at DKR. The man is hurting right now. In his own words , he is a pleaser. He wants to be liked. Right now no one likes the direction of Texas Football under Mack. One thing for sure MB loves The University of Texas. Lets hope his love includes a willingness to step down.

I really hope we don't have to go through another stretch like before.

  • If Mack retires, Deloss will go with him. Powers probably will not be too far behind. The entire athletic department men and women need to be cleaned out, save the men's golf coach, tennis coach, and Eddie Reese.

    NLeininger

  • Many of the issues with Mack Brown are predictable. He's been through an extremely trying period over the last 20 years or so. It takes a toll. In earlier years 60 hour workweeks are the norm and enjoyable. You're not truly working because you're doing what you love. In your mid 60s it becomes harder to enjoy what you're doing and it becomes work. Look at Myer's "heart attack" which was probably simply out of control stress. Look at Muschamp's bloodying his head with a head bump. Look at Patterson's prowling the sidelines last night. Those three guys are where Mack likely was 10-15 years ago. They are intense and their teams play intensely. Mack is cruising and so is his team. I don't fault Mack as a person but I think he should take a hard look at where he is in his life and ask himself whether he really has that fire in the belly that's required.

  • Mine too Kyle. The really big thing here is do the people in charge have what it takes to make this move? I think they do not. What comes with the kind of coach we have is really loyal friends up the food chain. No this will be determined by Mack. I hope he loves Texas as much as he says he does. If its true we can turn this thing around in one day.

The engine that is The University of Texas can dominate when the fire takes the water to steam. Right now we are not even on boil.
