Bobby... A question?

I don't think people realize just how limited Major was physically later in his career. That's part of it. The other part is that he is/was a team player first and foremost.

u r one of the few people that have stated this publicly and i entirely agree with it. i saw a practice before the year Chris replaced him and he seemed like he could barely walk much less actually play football cause of his knee. A healthy major and the simms-applewhite debate would make more sense to me, but even though the end didn't turn out great, i'm not sure how pretty applewhite would have looked those first few games. and who could have seen the implosion coming in the CU game?

  • I would love to see Major get an opportunity to be the HC of Texas. I love everything the guy stands for. Being from Baton Rouge myself and watching him lead Catholic High School along with Travis Minor and Greg Brown made a big impression on me as middle schooler, so much so that all of my friends wanted to attend Catholic. I watched the adversity during his UT career with the Simms situation and he never complained. While I was an LSU fan (please no down votes lol) I would have loved to see him come home to Baton Rouge, and coach there, but he's where he needs to be. Fast forward to Duke's recruitment, when he found out the family was from Baton Rouge he specifically made an extra effort to let them know that Texas was an amazing place with a family atomosphere. Which is something my aunt really loves.

Of the guys on staff, I think it would be either Major or Diaz. I think either would be excellent head coaches and shepherds and leaders of a college program.

Depending on timing, I'm anxious to see how guys like Gary Patterson and Art Briles do. Then there's a guy like Paul Rhodes who I know Deloss has a lot of respect for.

Two guys out west are very interesting to me - Jim Mora and Steve Sarkisian.

From the south, I think Dan Mullen will be a no go for a variety of reasons. Larry Fedora, if he does well in Chapel Hill, might be someone to consider because of his Texas ties.

OK, I will bite. The name left out was Harsin. Why? I am not saying he should be the next head coach just why was he left off. (Mack will coach until Malcom turns pro anyway! BOY I AM A JOHNNY ONE NOTE.)believing

Art Briles with a top-level defense would be an interesting thing. Similar to Leach in Lubbock if he had ever had one.

Similar in more ways than one. Clearly both coaches design and implement a mean offense but I wouldn't want either guy representing Texas. I'm a fan of Leach's personality but still view him as a side show guy. Briles, on the other hand comes off as an a-hole to me.

Bobby, I know we had the HCIW thing set up with Muschamp, but do you really think DeLoss would really hand over the keys to someone with no head coaching experience?

Yes, I do, if he feels it's the right person. Deloss is not (and never has been) a grass is always greener type of guy.

  • Short of Jim Harbaugh getting on his knees and begging for the job, Diaz needs to be next in line.

As an aside, I can't help but think that Pete Carroll would turn Texas into an absolute machine. I know it'll never happen for obvious reasons but it makes the proverbial hampster wheel spin none the less.

  • i keep seeing sarkesian's name in this thread. that guy needs to win some games before he gets mentioned as the next hc at texas. he's going into year 4 and hasn't broken 7 wins overall, or 5 in conference, yet. aside from getting damn lucky his first year vs usc, he can't beat any of the top 3 teams in the conference. 1-8 vs usc, oregon and stanford.

as far as recruiting - if sumlin is a 3* general, then sark is right there w/ him. over the 3 years he's been in seattle, 1 five*, 15 four* and 53 three*.

  • I think the Muschamp boat has sailed on with respect to him getting a second look. I really think Manny Diaz is someone that would have to be on a top 3 candidate list for the next HC spot. Manny could sell dirt to anyone and make it sound like you were buying gold. The ability to connect, not just with media and fans, but to recruits has to be a huge factor in the decision making process. At Texas, image is extremely important. Yes, we want to win and that alone will certainly earn you respect and give you the financial boost needed to stay on top , but you can bet whoever takes over is going to have some, if not many of the same qualities that Mack Brown has had while he's been here. Mack has won, but he’s done it with class and within the rules. That aspect cannot get lost IMO when thinking about a successor and Manny Diaz certainly fits that profile from what I've seen not only in public, but from the reports provided from the Mods as well on this site.

The ability to earn the respect from the players inside the team based on the way he carries himself, his knowledge and confidence really says a lot about the kind of impact he could have with all the keys in his hands. You have to like the way he came in and handled a defense with a lot of question marks and turned it to the biggest strength on our team last season. The sky is the limit this year, not only because of his “system” in place, but because of his character and focus. You can see the intensity and respect that he has for the game everytime he gets in front of a camera and that’s the kind of guy I want if I’m a Texas fan and it’s the kind of coach I would want to play for if I’m a recruit looking at my list of schools.

It wouldn’t surprise me at all if Manny took over when Mack retires; and if he does, it will be more to do about what he can accomplish off the field for Texas as much as what he has done on it. Manny understands that concept and he made it clear during his first press conference when he was hired. He talked about “the people” that were already here as a main factor in his decision too accept the job. He knew that Texas had the facilities and the money to compete with anyone in luring the best possible candidate, but more importantly, he saw right away that atmosphere was more important and that’s the kind of environment that leads to success. Mack understood that concept very well and I think Manny embraces it and would carry on that same focus if he were to be named the next HC.

He told me that he liked the way that they hired Mack. They set up a committee, they looked at a couple of guys and made a decision. He also said that he would ask Mack to make him a short list of who he should be talking to. I really shortened the conversation but it didn't sound like he wanted to go with a coordinator.

I'm not ready to hand the keys to Sarkisian today but he also inherited a winless team. I do agree the wins need to outweigh the potential at some point. This year is huge for him in my view. He held on to his buddy Nick Holt longer than he should have (sounds familiar) and went out and hired one of the best DC's in the country in Justin Wilcox. Sirmon and Lupoi have them recruiting at a much higher level than they've done in the past (currently 11th in 2013 rankings).

I think they're a salty game from Keith Price away from overtaking Oregon in that division. If he's able to make them a perennial threat to USC in the next two years or so, I could see him being a very viable candidate when Mack finally steps down.

If Diaz were to get the job, I hope he goes the route of hiring college assistants. I don't know if that played a role in Florida's struggles last year but I thought Muschamp's NFL-lite model was odd. I know he's a Saban guy but having seen his staff and the one Mack hired, there's not much of a legit comparison.

  • Is Dodds going to be around long enough to make the decision on who replaces Mack? Will he retire if Mack does?

They did? The story I heard is that Dodds wanted Gary Barnett and a group lead by Tom Hicks and Daryl Royal suggested Mack.

I know one of the committee members, they interviewed Barnett and I was told he was difficult to deal with. The same group met with Mack and it made it a night and day decision. But that is my point. Deloss effectively said he like the process last time and it worked well so I would guess he would do the same thing again. I also don't think Royal was part of the search committee.

  • Briles is massively misperceived by Texas fans. He is a really great guy when you're around him. He could recruit lights-out at Texas IMO. I absolutely think he would be on the short list with his success at UofH and Baylor, to go along with all his connections among Texas high schools. I was shocked A&M didn't throw the world at him. He would have been a great hire for the aggies.

Sorry, but Royal was a big part of Mack being hired. He had a lot of influence with big$$$$$ guys who use their influence to get Mack hired over Barnett

Hard to argue with his ability as a coach and recruiter. Hell Baylor is relevent in football! That alone should land him a bigger job. Totally agree with you about Briles and aTm.

  • Does everything Briles does in recruiting on the up and up? Curious since he does have Lache and Ahmad Dixon on his roster after all.
