  • With a slice of regret, Texas A&M AD Bill Byrne prepares for SEC move

Byrne isn't counting on playing Texas soon and predicts Longhorn Network won't work

  • "I feel badly about that," Byrne said. "I'm very foolish. I assumed -- and it was a rash assumption on my part -- that our friends over in the state capital would want to continue playing us. It turns out they didn't think we were as much of a rival as we thought of them."

That's right Bill, you're not our rivals. Tech and Baylor are/were.

  • "They've (SEC) added about 35 million people to their footprint (with Texas A&M and Missouri)..."

Gotta agree with Byrne...I mean, if you take away the weekly TV coverage from CBS, ESPN, Fox (SE channels), Comcast, Time Warner, Grande, & AT&T, then A&M to the SEC brought in the Texas market for the conf

  • Past time for the Ags to change their country boy, self-righteous, military school trappings that originated in World War I and join the 21st century. They became obsessed with comparing themselves to UT, and the last thing they need is a continuing series w. us. Culturally, getting away from UT is probably good for the Ags, although Byrne and the rest of the Ag heirarchy should've anticipated and accepted loss of the series.

It will be interesting to see if being in the SEC gives A&M a greater or lesser presence in the State of Texas. People will probably follow the Ags out of curiosity at first, to see how they measure up in the country's top league. But overall and in the long run, I expect fans in Texas will be a lot more interested in seeing how the 6 Texas/Oklahoma teams fare playing against each other, than watching the Ags against most of the SEC.

  • I stated it in another thread, but the real question is why hasn't A&M done a better job with their status as the #2 school in the state in terms of size, budget, and recruit preference? Baylor is killing it by comparison, and might even overtake them in the recruits' eyes. Maybe Baylor is more focused on their own improvement and less on competing with us. Green may be half of their colors, but unlike A&M, it doesn't appear to be the color of their eyes.

Maybe the move to the SEC, along with moves toward mainstreaming the culture of the school, is the start of the process they feel they need to redefine themselves. The separating will force them to take their eyes off us somewhat. What is unfortunate is that had Perry not stacked their BOR, and Gates had stayed as President, they would have wound up in a better place, faster, and with some of their traditions and rivalries still in tacked. Perry's meddling in this cannot be denied. Thank God he won't be president, & I'm saying that as a conservative Republican.

  • the statement from him about tamu had to examine expenses before committing to a joint shared tv network is the biggest lie of the entire piece. if the power guys at tamu seriously wanted to partner with us on a network, everyone knows it would of happened.

now having said that, his statement about the LHN ultimately failing is looking more and more correct as time goes on. i'm not on an expert on tv networks, but i'm willing to go out on limb right now and say at this point the only option espn has is to allow the networks to buy it a la cart. time will tell though i guess.

The aggy obsession in refusing to speak the words . . . Austin or The University of Texas . . is a perfect example of aggy derangement. Please just go away . . . forever!

  • Texas, Baylor and TT are not going to schedule Aggies for a while. I feel TCU joins the other 3 Big 12 teams and i highly doubt Ou and Osu would schedule them either.
I would love to propose to Rice, UH, Smu that all 4 Big 12 teams will schedule you once a decade home and home so that you dont schedule A&M. Shut them out of the state of Texas and Oklahoma. Have Ou and Osu do the same for Tulsa. I think in the long run that would hurt A&M tremendously in the region. I really do hope this happens!
Their lack of success in winning games will also hurt. They could not compete in the Big 12 and will have a very hard time competing in the $ec west with Lsu, Bama, Auburn, Arky.

Sad part is Byrne was the most rational adult in the room when A&M considered the SEC move and he acknowledges he was foolish. Guess that makes R. Bowen Loftin and the regents screaming insane.

  • again I say Bryne and the rest of the idiots that control tamu are flat out being dishonest with the excuses of why they made the decisions they did. we all know what they really wanted. but again in terms of the LHN, he guy at this point looks more right than wrong regarding whether it will be successful. at some point espn is going to have to all the networks offer the LHN a la cart to individual households. if they don't then very few of us are ever going to watch a single hour of LHN on our traditional cable box.

Definitely true. Signed a 10 year carriage agreement and it did not include the LHN. Here is the thread on it from a couple of months ago.

Comcast signs new deal with ESPN and does not include LHN

Because at least one of those thing isn't necessarily true.

More specifically, I think it's dangerous to assume that A&M is clearly the "#2 school in the state in terms of ... recruit preference." TCU, Tech, Baylor ... hell even Houston have increased the noise level substantially in recent years.

And spare me the "SEC! SEC!" argument that the gomers use. The top kids who want to play in the SEC have almost all always been able to do so - they just went to LSU, Bama, or wherever. The number of fence-sitting recruits who historically MIGHT have gone to A&M but didn't do so because they wanted to play in the SEC, and who now will do so because they get to play "in" -- read, significantly, "against" -- the SEC, is not clearly measurable, but surely isn't enough to change the level of a program any time soon.

    BEHorn

  • btw- i strongly encourage Mack to go back to 1999 after that sh!t bonfire game. call it negative recruiting or whatever. "if you do not want to come to Texas, you had better get out of state or you are NOT going to win."they do a fine job of pissing recruits and HS coaches off enough, but make it that much more rocky and difficult. you want the SEC? what Bud did to you is nothing compared to what Wes is about to. just don't crawl back for help, because you're not getting it. you're the runaway nobody cares about. you dug your grave, lie in it. you sh!t your bed, sleep in it. but don't even THINK Texas is going to even remotely help you. quite the opposite.

  • TEXAS vs TEXAS A^m was some damn good Football....

I got no problem at all scheduling them this next year, or making rooom for them in the years to come. Who cares...about punishing them. Its football. Its a good game...it brings in money...big time money, its good for the state....good for the fans, great for the players.

TEXAS A§M wanted to go somewhere else, big deal...., I could give a rats ass. All this, coniving, vindictiveness, lets manipulate , control them through convincing other B12 teams and all our opponents to not play them reeeks of bitterness, revenge, and vindictiveness.

Geez, let A§m do what the hell they want to...., give em peace....wish em well.

the minute we start planting our roots in the river of vindictiveness, revenge, and outright calculating ....., any branch of that will bear the fruit of ...nothing good.

We are Texas...., let A§M do what they want. I personally want to play them each and every year. That game was fun, its entertaining....

I say get the egos out of this, and Play them... but if we dont....My Lord, dont put any energy into planning their destruction.....and downfall, thats not going to bear any fruit that tastes good....leave pandoras box alone..., dont open that one...,

let it be about football, and the fans...and the players..

no faster freefall than TAKING their money, TAKING their Recruits...and winning over their women......Just play em ...BEAT THEM DOWN....and their will no longer be that lingering question of WHO is who in the STATE of TEXAS.

Hey and you know, in 5 years, when A^M wises up, and was begging to come back to the renovated BIG 16 , I would take them back in a heartbeat. They are great for the conference.....great team to beat down on....and I would take Them and Arkansas back.

a good gallop is a good gallop..., just because she decides she wants a new flavor, doesnt mean i am going to cut her off for the rest of mylife... a good poke is a good poke, As Gus would say. Maybe its just me...and my way of rationalizing...but I cant phantom throwing out....forever banishing, .....my top 2 pokes of all time... A^m has got to be on that list...,

A^M and OU are tooo much fun, great time, I dont care what they say afterwards....WHO cares...its their drama not mine, like a bunch of women chattering and gossiping, Get A^M in bed, ride her hard....enjoy, smoke a big fat cigar in victory with a mojitos, , bottom line is, when Lights come on, That game is one of our top games of the year...., its a performance..its gets me going and I smile each and every time...... , i dont care what all my friends, family are saying, A^M is still a gooooood gallop, and i would sneak em in each and every YEAR...je je let everyone talk, piss and moan about it....,

If A^m knocks....gosh, i dont got it in me to not open that window, I am always leaving the door cracked open, in hopes of them returning...je je ....maybe some of you want to bar the door...put the lock on... but not me... They are a good time, great game...great for University of Texas

just my two cents in paradise....

i agree, it will be interesting to see how the Texas market responds. they'll certainly enjoy an initial ratings bump...whether they maintain viewers across the nation and within the sec will depend on the ags being competitive. ironically though, for non-aggy viewers in Texas, I think their viewership goes up if they lose. there isn't much greater entertainment than watching the aggies get their teeth kicked in, and then reading the smorgasbord of rationalization and blood-letting on texags or gigem.

it's not vindictiveness or revenge at all. it's "you get no favors". you need to realize they did this out of spite and to essentially disperse the conference and it almost happened. the PAC 10 simply did just not want or need Oklahoma State and shut OU out because of it. the punishment attempting to be delivered was on the other end. and it was w/ ill intention.

the were offered 1/2 of the Longhorn Network $. they didn't like the name or Texas recruits on tv for HS games. then they decided they'd take it. "you made your choice" and got the middle finger from Texas. now they realize what they've done, are in for, and want to spark it back up before it's too late. it IS too late. sorry junior. the time was two years ago when you were chest beating and begging for the SEC. now, go have BIG fun and play your "real football" that is "SEC good"(they're not). you'll get no help from Texas. we have a rival in a shithole North of the Red River. they're rival is in College Station. you broke it, you bought it. you poked it, she's yours.
