Big 12 men's hoop notes (Aug. 20)

  • Iowa State

Maybe this could turn into a hoop note; maybe not. Chanse Creekmur, former ASU three point specialist (168 of 194 career fga were of the three point variety) has enrolled at ISU and will be a walk-on in football. I wonder if we might be seeing him set up outside the arc for the Mayor in 2013-14. Creekmur hit 36.1% of his threes last year.

Milton Doyle, a guy I had suspected was recruited as Anrio Adams insurance, has decided to leave KU. As far as I know, he accepted financial aid for the summer, so he's screwed for a year, but he can still complete a year in residence and be eligible at a different Div. 1 school in 2013-14.

Jurick goes to court today, maybe for a plea, but it might just be procedural stuff. He is alleged to have had more than 50 grams of pot. (Fifty grams = 1.76 oz.)

Was just beaten out by Morehead State for Bakari Turner. Of course, at this point (and every point), I have no idea how many guys have scholarships with Gillispie. I think Blake Nash took Silva's spot, but I am not certain Wannah Bail is being allowed to participate after he had to go home for the summer to clear up an "academic issue."

West Virginia (where I am currently sitting and typing this, btw)

Da'Sean Butler has been hired as a grad assistant. That ACL injury against Duke in the Final Four a couple of years back has led to a third surgery, which is a real shame for him. He was a very good player in college before ripping his knee up.

  • Thanks Bierce, as always.

Been an interesting off season in Stillwater, to say the least.

You (and everyone else) are quite welcome.

It just got more interesting in Stillwater. Guerrero just decided to leave to be with his sick mom in California.

This article opines Phil Forte will start at the point. I don't know about that, but Marcus Smart's conjoined twin may have a much bigger role as a freshman than anyone could have reasonably anticipated.

Forte wouldn't start at PG he'd just guard the PG on defense and play the 2 on offense while Smart runs the point.

  • I wasn't thinking Forte would act as the point, hence the "I don't know about that." I think you're right about Smart being the trigger.

Jurick received a new court date of Sept. 17.

Still waiting for the final word regarding Olukemi (5 years run out at start of spring semester, OSU has applied for a waiver), Devonta Abron (TCU appealing for waiver of transfer rule), and anyone with clearinghouse issues (Bail).

Had no idea he started in the spring.

From what I have read, it appears the story is that he failed to qualify initially, so he went to prep school, but the school closed in December, 2007. He then received some brilliant advice to start junior college in January, 2008, and he did so.

    That's on him, then.
