Big 12 hoop notes--TCU gets a big boost edition

  • K-State

Got a commitment from Marcus Foster.

    http://www.kansascity.com/2012/09/10/3807157/texas-shooting-guard-foster-picks.html

Lost out on the more highly regarded SG Jordan Matthews who says not going to Manhattan is a "no-brainer." (OK, he's from the Bay Area and really said picking Cal over the others was a "no-brainer," but where's the humor in that?)

    http://www.mercurynews.com/breaking-news/ci_21505473/cal-basketball-adds-another-top-100-recruit

Wildcats couldn't get Semi Ojeleye, who decided on Duke. Hard to say whether getting rid of Martin who coached brother Victor helped or hurt there.

Ford promised to have some walk-ons. He has added Alex Budke, the son of the women's coach who died in the plane crash last year.

    TCU

Abron got the waiver! I'm glad for that. I'd like to see TCU put a credible team on the court, and Abron should go a long way to helping them on the front line. We are talking about a guy who pulled down 12 offensive rebounds in a single game last year, and the opponent was UConn, not some Div. II school.

Tolbert says he doesn't want BCG back. (Nash had alleged Tolbert was forced to do nothing but dunk in a practice after gashing his hand.)

    BCG on indefinite sick leave.

    http://www.dallasnews.com/sports/college-sports/texas-tech-red-raiders/20120910-texas-tech-basketball-coach-billy-gillispie-on-indefinite-sick-leave.ece

Speculation Tech is waiting for the sick leave to end before firing him.

    http://deadspin.com/5941585/source-texas-tech-will-fire-billy-gillispie-as-soon-as-they-can-legally-do-so

Self doesn't want to defend BCG and can't comment on what happened in Lubbock, so he went into a 10,000 word exegesis in defense of BCG and how the critics aren't in position to criticize him.

  • Darrell Williams' bases for a new trial have been published. A new witness who will impeach one of the victims, an impermissibly suggestive photo used by police tainted identification, Batson challenge, and some stuff that is thrown in as a matter of course.

Ha. I notice the first thing on that clip is Barnes saying "our goal is go win the national championship." I bet he never repeats the "mistake" he made two years ago to dare to say that wasn't an "obsession." I couldn't believe the shitstorm that comment stirred up.

No quotes from Tyrone Branyan? I'm bitterly disappointed.

  • KU

Self, who has been criticized in recent years for being late to the recruiting party, has very active early in this cycle, and KU is on a slew of guys. Maybe we're fortunate KU is only graduating 4 guys and already has commitments from Frankamp and Greene, so it can't walk away with half of the top ten.

Self went to Indiana to visit Demetrius Jackson, to Florida to see Chris Jones (JUCO PG who was top 50 in 2011), and had Cat Barber on a visit to KU recently. Aaron Gordon is going to late night at KU. With his stated interest in KU, all uncommitted top ten prospects outside of the twins put Kansas among their leaders. Embiid is considering KU, too.

  • Tech now says BCG is on indefinite medical leave, is no longer making day to day decisions for the program, and has been instructed not to engage the program in any way until he has met with Hocutt to discuss the allegations.

    http://espn.go.com/mens-college-basketball/story/_/id/8365791/texas-tech-red-raiders-billy-gillispie-no-longer-making-decisions-team-focus-health

This is completely f'd up now. Tech has no coach. Their coach was invisible during July recruiting. They have no coach during fall recruiting. There is no time frame for the selection of a new coach. They have at least three spots opening up for 2013 since Nurse is a senior and Bail and Carey are no-shows.

Tech could take years just to get back to the glory days of the Pat Knight era.

    bierce

  • Some smart comments from Pat Knight, then one very interesting one. Knight sympathized with everyone and urged outsiders to be patient and not rush to any judgment while Tech investigates and decides what to do. He then stated several of his former players sought a transfer to Lamar, but he turned them all down because he didn't want to appear to be poaching from his former employer.

"I just wanted to stay totally clear," Knight said. "I told my assistants, if you ever hear from anybody, don't get involved in that. I don't want Tech thinking I'm trying to take players away from them because I left on good terms. I don't want to jeopardize that."

  • Found this on an ESPN chat with Dana O'Neal:

    " (Plano, TX)

How crucial a year is this for Rick Barnes and his future leading the Texas program? Does he seat warm up exponentially if the Horns don't make it to the second week of the NCAAs in 2013?
    Dana O'Neil  (2:48 PM)

Derrin: Interesting question and I have to preface it by saying up front that I really really like Rick Barnes as a person. OK, so yeah, it will get hot. Here's the thing. Texas is Texas, so it's always going to be football first, which allows hoops to fly under the radar a bit but Texas is Texas and likes to be good at everything. Barnes has not been bad by any means, but he's got to start producing more with the talent he gets."

~While I don't think he'll be on the hot seat, he really needs to make this his year to make a run for recruiting purposes...it's also always good to hear how much respect people have for Barnes.

Yes, it is, but it's always a downer to hear them add the caveat "he's got to start producing more with the talent he gets." I admit to having said something similar for the last couple of years, but commentators always add that, and they rarely temper it with an acknowledgement that the talent has rarely stayed for very long.

  • K-State will host Lamar in the NIT Tip-off with the winner facing the winner of Alabama-Huntsville and North Texas. Nearly all the height Lamar returns is guys who were way down the bench, so the Cardinals will have a job dealing with K-State's size advantage with Henriquez-Roberts and Diaz.

Gillispie was sent to the Mayo Clinic.

    http://m.lubbockonline.com/sports-red-raiders-mens-basketball/2012-09-11/tech-coach-gillispie-seeks-treatment-mayo-clinic

It has a chemical dependency recovery wing, not that I'm saying that is the basis for his hospitalization.

    http://www.mayoclinic.org/chemical-dependency/

However, if that is part of the reason for his hositalization, then it could be a long wait before Tech feels like it can proceed with determining whether to continue or terminate his employment.

Yeah, worst of both worlds collided two years ago when they surprisingly dominated the B12, only to blow the championship and then the NCAA game against Arizona.

It's like everything from mid-December to mid-February that year didn't actually happen, so Barnes gets blamed for the bad finish and the last loss (which he should) and wasting talent, which he clearly didn't, given that they won in North Carolina, pounded Michigan State, won at KU, at A&M, etc.

Frankly, I think there is a very short list of coaches who could've gotten last year's team to the tournament, but he got no credit for that.

I'm actually fairly optimistic about this upcoming team.

I'm also pretty to very optimistic about this years team. I like the roster, and team makeup in general. A healthy Julien Lewis is key IMO - always seems to be battling the nagging injuries.

Unfortunately there is no good location for the team to start the tournament. NCAA tournament rules prohibit teams from playing tournament games on their home floors unless it is the Final Four. Ergo, no first weekend for Texas at the Erwin Center. Closest location will be Kansas City. Oh, joy.

To that end, when are they finally going to announce regional sites for the 2014 tournament? I've been thinking for years that is the one in which Texas should be positioned to make a deep run.

“There are a few coaches that Julius is willing to confide in, and that he reaches out to with questions,” Prestonwood coach Chris Mayberry told Rivals.com. “But, I think that Calipari is by far the one that Julius is most comfortable with. Comfort in his recruitment is going to be huge, so I think that’s great that Julius and John (Calipari) have that type of early relationship.”

OU just picked up a commitment from JUCO PF Dominique Elliott. “I didn’t know. That was crazy. That atmosphere was awesome,” Elliott said. “And I could see how OU supports every sport. Everybody was there cheering for the football team. It was cool.” (Something tells me he didn't see the turnout for OU basketball games over the last couple of years.)

WVU got a big commitment for three years down the road. Literally big. 6'9" 258 lbs worth of a 2015 player, Levi Cook. The question becomes whether Huggins can keep Levi Cook to the commitment, since Kentucky, UCLA, tOSU, and Florida are among the schools expressing interest.

Using the picture as a guideline for height, Felix looks 2-3 inches shorter than 6'1 Myck Kabongo. Demarcus Holland surprising looks 6'3 like Lewis. Jaylen Bond and 6'5 Sheldon McClellan look the same height. Papapetrou looks all of 6'8 and Ridley and Lammert look about 6'9 or 6'10 with Ibeh looking 6'11 or 7'0. Prett good height at each spot except for Bond. Holmes I guess wasn't there for this but I'd assume he is either even with Papapetrou or slightly shorter.....
