  • Here's some fun stats: Colorado goes 4-18 from the free throw line and commits 17 turnovers to only 6 assists and Baylor still loses.

I didn't get to watch much of that, but what I did watch saw Colorado playing the opposite of BC yesterday. While BC was laying off Jackson and Heslip and protecting the rim, Colorado was really on Jackson tight. Jefferson broke free for a few dunks, and I see he finished 7/7 from the field, so I wonder if that was just how they played it all game. Baylor finished 3/16 from deep.

  • Well, this is pretty sad. Royce White talking about quitting. I guess this will make other teams pretty reluctant to draft uber-talented guys with anxiety disorders.

  • Looks like OSU gets to face NC State in the finals on Sunday. NC State up 66-49 over UMass with 12:15 left. NC State seems to have already settled on a 7 man rotation.

  • Watching an interesting feed of the OU-UT Arlington game on a stream. Just a camera view with crowd and arena announcer.

53-50 OU right now. OU having a hard time against the press. A little under 6 minutes according to game tracker.

  • OU is about to pull it out. Up 4 with Pledger at the line for one more shot and just a few seconds left. UT-Arlington went ice-cold from both the field and the line at the end.

In some other notes, KU actually didn't get some recruits. Gordon eliminated them and Roberson picked Syracuse.

  • No games today. Alas.

It is very early, of course, but right now the Big 12 is not looking good in power ratings, being just 2-2 against power conference opponents (losses to Colorado and Michigan State, wins over BC and Tennessee) and having that ugly loss by WVU to Gonzaga. It doesn't help that the losses are by the teams figuring to be at the top of the conference.

Five games on Sunday. Biggest game will be OSU vs. NC State at 5:30. NC State is top ten and looks it, having beating Miami O, Penn State, and UMass by an average margin of 24, not that any of those teams are going to threaten the top 25. Gottfried is already at 7 man rotation for the team, so it could falter with an injury to a key player or just wear down, but Howell and Leslie's propensity to get into foul trouble might be the only thing preventing it from winning the ACC this year. Offense is clicking -- 88 ppg, 56% fg shooting, 45% 3pt shooting, 17/13 a/t ratio. Only blemish is 62% ft shooting. Leading scorer is Warren.

OSU has now lost Soucek to a knee injury. No word on when he or Olukemi might be coming back. Cobbins still on track for a return in about 3 weeks.

Baylor vs. St. John's in a consolation game at the Charleston Classic at 5. St. John's looks mediocre, barely beating Detroit in its opener, then blowing a game late to a good but not nearly as good as last year Murray State, and being very thin on the front line until either Orlando Sanchez is cleared or they decide to reconsider a decision to redshirt God's Gift Achiuwa.

ISU hosts the Campbell Fighting Camels at 6. This will allow us a first look at the complete ISU team since Babb will now be available. ISU has been playing very, very well, but it has been up against schmucks, so it's hard to gauge exactly how good it is. We'll know in a couple of weeks after it plays Cincinnati and BYU.

TCU vs. Prairie View A&M at 3 in the South Padre Invitational. A good game for comparison shopping purposes. PVAM is a fairly known commodity already--10 point loser to Tech and 22 point loser to the nut squeezing weirdos.

K-State hosts North Florida at 1. See comment about ISU's play and level of opponents. North Florida may have lost to top 20 Memphis by only 15, but it was down 32 in the second half before coming back against the bench. Maybe the most telling thing about North Florida is that it's leading rebounder is its least prolific scorer.

Get this: 5'11" PG Will Wilson, who is good for 7.7 assists per game, but has shot only 1/7 in 94 minutes in 3 games and managed only 4ft attempts. He leads No. Fla. with 4.3 rpg, and scores only 1.7 ppg. I don't know if I can even imagine that. It's like taking Balbay and having him drink a dose of eversomuchmoreso, except Wilson doesn't have any blocks and doesn't get many steals.

We'll know about KSU after it plays Gonzaga in mid-December.

Well, one anyway. I don't think much of Auburn yet, and Murray State doesn't have much chance for more of them. They get Colorado in the tournament finals, but then they have nothing but mid-majors and down for the rest of the year. Biggest non-conference games left are @ Dayton and home against Western Kentucky. Then it will have some still to be determined bracket buster game.

The Ohio Valley did get a little better with Belmont joining it, but Murray State has a very weak schedule.

I can't believe the ESPN writer gave the Racers as 7 for that. Dayton looks pretty good, but Valpo, Old Dominion, Lipscomb, and Evansville all already have bad losses this year.

  • This isn't Big 12 news, but it pushes the outliers of the term bizarre and is related to Texas basketball.

Texas's last opponent played a most interesting game a few hours ago. It lost to Florida Atlantic 64-61. It trailed 33-8 at the half. That's right. It scored 8 points in the first half and 53 in the second half.

  • KSU runs out to a 12-6 lead powered by 6/7 shooting from the field, but Will Wilson has already doubled his fg total for the year.

    bierce

  • KSU coasted to a 74-55 win in a game in which no one scored after a free throw was made with 3:02 left. 52-28 rebounding advantage pretty much explains it all, though Rodriguez and Spradling couldn't make a thing.

TCU got off to a horrible start. 1/8 shooting in the first few minutes to fall behind 14-4. It's turnover city. The two teams have combined for 14 turnovers in the first 12 minutes. 14-9 PVAM with 7:43 left in the first half.

    bierce

  • Baylor being completely outhustled in a 19-6 run by St. John's, which leads 28-19. Bears not named Jefferson are 3-15 from the field and SJ is closing out on all shooters and interfering with passing lanes and beating Baylor down the court. Baylor is killing SJ on the glass, though.

    bierce

  • And there is why Baylor is so dangerous. Ball inside to Austin for two, secured defensive rebound, to Heslip for a three, secured rebound, Heslip for another three plus a free throw, Jackson steal for a breakaway with Austin flushing the offensive rebound, then another Jackson steal for a breakaway and he's at the line to shoot two. 11-0 run plus two free throws coming in just one minute.

    bierce

  • Smart hitting from outside to pace a 12-2 OSU run for a 16-9 lead.

    bierce

  • Smart started getting steals for breakaways. OSU winning on the boards. NC State looking lazy on perimeter passes. 38-28 OSU at the half. Leslie with 3 fouls. Smart with 18 points.

    bierce

  • In the no one but Baylor department of stat oddities, Baylor is outrebounding St. John's 30-10. Tie game at 62 with 13 minutes left.

  • Leslie just fouled out with 17 minutes to go. Picked up his fourth, said something, was called for the tech, and he's gone. OSU now up 15.

    bierce

  • St John's went ridiculously slopped down the stretch. Baylor up 95-77 with less than a minute left.

NC State trying to make a little comeback. Down 11 with 12:12 left.

    bierce

  • What an improvement by OSU over the last 10 days. NC State had a bad game on offense today, but most of that was due to OSU defense. NC State had a bad game on defense today, and most of that was not paying attention to perimeter shooters.

But OSU has gone from barely beating a really bad UC Davis team (it lost at home to No. Ariz.), to needing a total meltdown by Akron to win in OT in the first round, to a 17 point win over a very mediocre Tennessee, to this absolute slaughter of a legitimate top ten team.

    That is a growth curve.

    bierce

  • ISU is winning comfortably, but not overly impressively. 79-66 right now with 3:03 to go. Some hiccups are to be expected after re-integrating Babb into the offense. Looks like Long is the guy to lose the most PT because of it.
