Big 12 hoop games and notes (Nov. 15-18)

  • OSU was up 10 with under 10 minutes to go but has managed only 8 points since, and Akron just tied the game at 61 on a post move by Marshall for a layup and the fifth foul on Jurick. OSU has really shut down Akron shooting for most of the game, but OSU has shot poorly as well. Markel Brown is the only guy to hit a three.

Akron missed the ft, OSU set up Smart in the post, he drew a double team in the post, kicked out, Nash drove and threw up a prayer. Ball out of bounds off Akron. 31 seconds in the game, 9 on the shot clock.

    bierce

  • Smart and Murphy both missed in close, could have been a foul, but no whistle. Akron setting up for last shot. Akron fed the post, ball was knocked out of bounds with 0.7 seconds left for Akron to try to get a shot off. Three from the corner got off but didn't even hit iron. OT.

    bierce

  • Big 12 teams be warned. Forte already knows how to fall down after shooting a three to get a foul called even when he isn't touched on the shot until he comes back to the floor.

    bierce

  • OSU wins 69-65, scoring the last 8 of OT. Akron totally pissed the game away, and Forte was nails at the end of OT after doing nearly nothing all game.

Akron was up 4 with less than 2 minutes to go with the ball. Marshall had fouled out after getting mad about getting whacked in the face by Soucek and going banging into him in the lane to prove that he was dumb enough to foul out. This after he scored the first four points in OT because Murphy couldn't handle him.

So Akron had the ball, ran really bad offense, sent everyone to the boards, let OSU go 3 on 1 for Forte to set up for his first three of the game and OSU's first points of OT with 1:29 to go. Akron then worked clock, drove for a wild contested shot, sent everyone to the glass again, another run out, and the Forte line up on the other side for the iffy foul for three shots. Akron got a guy to the rim, but he missed the contested layup, rebound OSU, and Smart hit a pair of FT.

When Jurick is out, OSU doesn't look like it can defend against an offensive post threat when the opponents work to get it to the post. Cobbins will probably help when he comes back, but that may take some time.

  • Baylor now up against BC. Tied at 8 with 15:18 to go. That's Jackson 6, Jefferson 2, rest of Baylor 0-6, and Ryan Anderson with all 8 for BC. Walton has 2 fouls early. Bello, Franklin, and Gathers in after the timeout.

    bierce

  • Jackson had 15 points (no ft) on 6-6 shooting before he finally missed one. Baylor up 28-21, starting to get offensive rebounds. 7:17 left 1st half.

    bierce

  • So Baylor went into turnover mode, left BC shooters open, and a 10-2 run puts BC up 31-30. Austin back in gets a putback to get Baylor back into the lead.

    bierce

  • BC has been laying off the Baylor guards all game, so Jackson was scoring at will and Heslip was missing some open looks, but it prevented any of the dunk fests I say in Baylor's first two games. Heslip just got into the lane, went straight to the hoop and the BC defender let him and just kept his butt pressed against Jefferson the whole way.

Baylor was having a very hard time handling a two man pick and roll game for a while. Anderson went to the basket and over defenders on one play and hit the open jumper from the elbow on the next.

    BC up 38-37.

    bierce

  • Baylor got a steal and drive for a layup by Bello with just a few seconds left, BC inbounded, and Anderson put up a very under control jumpshot/half-court heave at least two seconds early. Nothing but net. 19 for Anderson. 43-41 BC at the half.

    bierce

  • I didn't see the earlier part of the OSU game, but it appears Olukemi injured his left knee. Ford says it doesn't look good.

I don't trust Baylors guards. I like Jackson but he's got a little too much R.Westbrook in him for my liking. Not really sure what Walton brings to the table. My fear is that they'll become to perimeter oriented like they were at times last year.

Haven't seen Austin this year because he was injured and missed the last game. I thought Jefferson would help this year but I'm suprised he's been this good. It'll be interesting to see how he responds when the competition gets better. It was good to see them play some man2man. Never liked the zone last year.

Having said that, it wouldn't suprise me if they go into Lexington and get a win in a couple weeks.

    COACH CUTLIP

  • If Heslip was hitting, this could be a blowout, but he's not, so it isn't. Baylor up 57-52 after a 10 point run. Jackson has 26 on 13 fga and hasn't been to the line.

  • Thanks for the updates guys. Oklahoma State --- a lot of work to do IMO.

  • Not Big 12, but future UT opponent related--

Sam Houston State getting blasted by #1 IU, 30-10.

    Also of possible interest --

Watching Alabama--Oregon State. Pollard is off to a rough start in his college career. Currently shooting under 30%, but looks pretty active in going to the offensive glass. Gueye is a walking foul.

  • If Baylor can't win the Big 12 this year, then Scott Drew is really the worst coach in America.

The title is there for the taking. KU does not look impressive early on.

Witness them falling behind by 12 in the first half in Phog against Chattanooga. Rallying to end the half, but going to the half down 36-28.

    bierce

  • KU ramped up the defensive pressure and blew out Chattanooga 41-19 in the second half to win 69-55.

TCU missed 4 ft in the last 1:19, was 8-16 from the line overall, and lost 64-61 to SMU. Jalen Jones was 4/6 on three pointers for SMU and finished with 21 points.

If I'm up late enough, I'll report on tonight's UCLA game against James Madison.

I'm still betting on Self and Kansas. I enjoy Baylor BB but I thought they left a lot of meat on the bone last year. Even with advancing to the Elite 8. I place a lot of that blame right at Drew's feet. If he was half the coach Mulkey is people would hate him a lot more than they do even now.

    COACH CUTLIP

  • I only watched a little of the UCLA game. Anderson looked bothered by his wrist and went 1/10. Rest of the team shot 70% and UCLA scored 63 in the first half. 100-70 final. James Madison was small and playing its first game of the season, so maybe that can explain part of the miserable first half it had, but UCLA looked very, very good for 20 minutes.

UCLA is interesting. Needed OT to beat UC-Irvine earlier in the week. UC-Irvine out rebounded UCLA 51-39 in the game.

  • Not on this topic, but it's looking like the Georgia job will open after the season.

  • Three games today.

OSU is whacking Tennessee 58-40 with 3:33 left. OSU killed Tenn on the boards in the first half and have shut down their shooters in the second. 18/23 from the line doesn't hurt either.

Baylor plays Colorado in about 15 minutes in a rematch of a tournament game in which Colorado faltered in the second half. Heslip hit 9 threes that game, I think, and it seemed like he couldn't miss.

OU goes to play UT-Arlington tonight. I doubt UT-A will be the same team it was last year, since it lost 5 of the top 9 guys in minutes played last year from a team that lost the last game of the season to finish 15-1 in the Southland, blew it in the conference tournament, then lost in the first round of the NIT in what was a hugely disappointing end to the season.
