Big 12 basketball -- dribblets of minor news

  • I mentioned some of this in the 2012-13 thread in passing, but gave no links. Here's some things going on with Big 12 basketball programs. A lot of this appears in the Rothstein article (1st link under Iowa State).

    Baylor

Heslip is going nuts for AIA.

Baylor with a shot at Rodney Hood, but it's running behind tOSU and Duke.

    Iowa State

Uthoff has stated he's down to Iowa and ISU. If he picks Iowa, he has to pay his own way for a year; however, the guy in the link below thinks Iowa is where he is going. I would point out the guy is incorrect about Uthoff having four years eligiblilty, since Uthoff has to sit a year as a transfer penalty and redshirted in 2011-12. I can't see the NCAA granting a waiver on the 5 year rule due to redshirt/transfer.

ISU getting a visit from Dorian Finney Smith this weekend. They guy who brought in Royce White is in charge.

Ejim is trying out for the Nigerian Olympic team.

    Kansas

Having been denied by Damontre Harris, KU is now trying to get Markus Kennedy, 6'9" 260, who played about 15 minutes a game as a freshman for Villanova. (Rothstein)

Adams supposedly received a qualifying score, but will wait to sign until cleared.. KU has one spot open.

    Kansas State

Weber promising a lot of 4 guard looks around Henriquez. Have to wonder what Thomas Gipson thinks about that. (Rothstein)

  • Had no idea K State hired Bruce Weber. I'm behind.

  • Big 12 would have been even more interesting if k state pulled the trigger on Gottlieb.

  • Agree on Gottlieb.

DLev -- don't worry... I don't think K-State is going anywhere with Weber, so you will catch up. biggrin

That one coaching shift in one year with Roy Williams from KU to UNC, Self from Ill. to KU, and Webber to Ill. really looked like it was going to work out for everyone those first few years. That third domino returned back to earth pretty quickly, though...

  • I heard from a friend that Wannah Bail has qualified, but that Carey still had work to do. Sounds like TT will get a little better.

I would be stunned to learn the clearinghouse has already reviewed and cleared Bail, considering how many different HS he attended.

I was too. But it depends on when he registered. If he registered earlier this year, then they've had plenty of time to review his previous transcripts. I don't know if this is the case, but I was told he was good to go, but Carey had more to do.

OK, but I'd ask you get back to your source to see if can confirm Bail has actually cleared rather than has merely submitted paperwork showing completion of sufficient hours with a sufficient GPA and a sufficient test score. I have to think Bail getting cleared would be reported all over Texas Tech sites, but until your post, I hadn't seen anything suggesting the clearinghouse has given the OK. Double T Nation's most recent comment (6/6/12) was only that Bail "is expected" while Carey is not. It was kind of ambiguous, but I took it to mean "expected to clear" not "expected to show up."

Both he & Carey attended each of the 7 high schools together and I had heard that Bail was the one with the work to do. I'll still be surprised if either gets in considering how difficult it was for Brown with just 2 schools on his transcripts.

This is what I thought too. But, apparently Bail is good to go, and Carey has work to do.

Like Bierce mentioned though, I should have made sure he meant that Bail had been cleared by the Clearinghouse. With that in mind I will leave it at Bail has met the requirements and Carey has not. Whether he has been cleared is uncertain.

  • Uthoff picked Iowa.

Kind of makes the whole thing about Bo Ryan placing unreasonable restrictions on his transfer a complete fiasco, doesn't it?
