Big 12 and SEC to play in bowl game

  • EDIT: This thread was started before the announcement, but since it's already gotten a lot of responses we'll just turn it into the main thread. I've attached a story on the details.

All the twitter and speculation about the Big 12 champs and the SEC champions meeting every year SHOULD get Florida State and Notre Dame thinking hard.

The Big 10 and the Pac 12 are aligned. They have been for years. Now the Big 12 and the SEC will be aligned.

This is Big Time Football. Why would Florida State want to linger in a basketball conference like the ACC? Why would Notre Dame want to be on their own?

I think the landscape is about to change dramatically.

    What do y'all think?

SEC, Big 12 champions will play in bowl if both miss playoff

Five-year agreement will start in 2014 to coincide with implementation of the new postseason model to decide a national champion.

  • If its true . . . its big.

    Hornoflatulence

  • Sounds like a great deal. I just wonder where it will be played. Will they switch between Dallas and ATL for that matchup? Will they use a BCS bowl? Will they treat it like the B10/P12 and the rose? Does that mean that if the first place B12 team is in the title game, the second place team would automatically go to the B12/SEC matchup?

There is nothing more dangerous in this world than a man with nothing to lose.

All good questions but I was thinking more about what effect it would have on realignment.

I think the college football landscape is about to look a lot different.

If that is true: The Big 12 will make a lot of money because if they bid out the semifinal games and we are paired with the SEC champs then that would be the marquee match up the TVs would want and the bidders will wage war on those rights. Keep your enemies(SEC) closer!

If it happened like this - I can hear the Aggies saying it now: Any year their conference champ beat our conference champ - SEC dominates so much better etc...and they are in 5th place in their division.

I agree it would add a degree of intrigue regarding expansion if that were the case.

  • Hummmmm . . . what if this is something completely different?

What if this is set up to be the semifinal? Or, if nothing gets resolved in the BCS/playoff mix . . . if we have the BIG and PAC playing in the Rose and the SEC and BIg XII playing in the Sugar/cotton . . . the next step in this equation is quite obvious.

The ACC just got relegated to the children's table with respect to football.

  • The more I look at it, its basically what we get at the Cotton Bowl now. The B12 champ will be in the final four 99% of the time and so will the SEC champ, so in the end, youll end up with the second or third place teams playing in this game.

Sounds great, but when the two champs meet, itll be in the final four and not this matchup.

unless . . . they are about 3 steps ahead and this will be the semi final game once all of the other realignment chips fall in place . . .

Off the cuff, this leaves the ACC without a dancing partner. All they have left is the BIGE and they dont have a team that will have you making plans to watch, which translates to a very poor TV demand, which leads to weak negotiating power for more money. If FSU and VT ever wanted to be part of a football conference, this is their chance. The ACCs only chance is to get ND to dance, but ND hasnt been worth a crap for a while either. My questions are this, if you care to answer:

    1. Will this put a cap on the number of teams conferences go for?
    2. What will the ACC schools do now?
    3. Will ND decide to get in the mix now that the ACC is the only game in town left for them? (if they dont get a special invite into the 4 team brawl)
    4. When will the B12 meet and what do you think will come of those meetings?

Dude, this has probably set the table for a very interesting summer. I promise you that the phones are blowing up right now. Schools from the BIGE and ACC have to be scrambling to find a way to get in on this. All the other conferences are making deals left and right and the money totals keep going up. OU has a network deal, texas has a network deal, Kst has an internet gig going, the B12 just negotiated a TV deal and not this is going to up the ante even more. B10 and P12 are rolling in it too. Basketball just doesnt make that kind of money. Which schools are going to bail?

There is nothing more dangerous in this world than a man with nothing to lose.

Now would be a good time for Mack to start winning championships

I disagree. Thats like AQ status if thats the case. Saying that if the SEC/B12 are in the top four, they will play in one half of the semis? I dont like it, but you might be right.

I want to be excited about this, but I just dont see the big deal the more I look at it. Itll be like Kst vs Arky last year or A&M vs LSu the year before.

Thats always been important, but does that importance go up now? How so?

I'm sorry. In my original post I wasn't replying to you specifically but hit the button by accident. I agree that its always been important and wish I felt like Mack put more importance on it. From my own perspective, I would love the opportunity to play Florida, Bama, LSU, Georgia in a bowl as opposed to a B10 team or a PAC1 team

  • Matt Hayes seems to think it is a big deal:

Matt Hayes ‏ _filtered ;Big12 goes from deathbed, to reaching 12 (FSU and Notre Dame) or 14 (VaTech and Miami) and becoming clear No.1.

I hope we go to 14 teams like that and that would be the number and be done with it. We also have to think that the SEC will try and add to expand their footprint - (Va Tech and ?).

    We shall see. Interesting summer.

4 TEAM BRAWL! I love it.

I think that's where college football is headed.

Schools like Notre Dame, Florida State, V Tech and Clemson need to get on the train before it leaves.

Every year there is controversy but if the 4 Champs were included, there can only be feeble excuses. Win your conference or go home.

Time for the football schools to get aligned with one of the 4 conferences.

The ACC and Big East can have their basketball landscape to themselves
