Big 12 Commish Confirms 13-Year, $2.6B TV Deal Agreed

  • Interview with Mitch Vingle of WV Gazette...

Vingle: "We've heard reports about the 13-year, $2.6 billion television deal with ESPN and Fox. When will the official announcement be made?"

Bowlsby: "Generally speaking, we've already come to terms. [The announcement] will be made in the coming weeks or months."

Vingle: "Please clear up the issue concerning schools granting media rights to the league. Schools agreed to grant the rights for a minimum of six years, but then word came that was extended to 13 years. Has that agreement been signed?"

Bowlsby: "It has been extended to 13 years and it has been signed."

And don't forget big 12 is the only one not including tier 3 so that puts Texas at 31mil

    Oklahoma at prob 28mil

And everyone else between 23 and 27 which would put everyone at top 3 conference numbers

  • Good stuff. 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 16, I'm very happy with this conference. It gives Texas the platform it needs and is plenty competitive.

Right now it is but time will tell if it remains at 10. The conference has 8 teams no one cares about nationally, is regional with one outlier in a state no one lives in and has one game (RRR) casual fans will be tuning in to watch.

I think long term the conference gets passed quite easily by the Big 10 as the perceived #2 conference and they way it is reported by media will reflect that.

You are correct, because the new playoff selections are going to be controlled by humans. And I believe the Big 12 SOS will be looked at as low. I believe that if the BCS selections were made by humans this year OSU, Baylor and KS would have been moved even lower because outsiders would look at Texas and OU as being down. And not the others as being better.

Unless, we can count on some of the other teams staying good and achieving major name recognition we will find ourselves being passed over for the playoffs more than once.

  • I definitely prefer 12, but if you are undefeated in this conference you won't be left out of a play four championship. That's really all that matters in 2014 and beyond. Now, if you drop a game there may not be wiggle room.

Depends if you are Texas and OU, then I agree. But, I think it is close when comparing to these teams with 1 loss. Alabama, LSU, Florida, Alburn, Arkansas, Ohio State, Michigan, Notre Dame, USC, Oregon, Stanford, Florida State, etc. It's going to be a beauty contest, and I think the other conferences will have preceived SOS advantage. But I could be completely wrong.

its not about whether someone on this thread is underrating the Big12, its about whether or not the beauty pageant (or the vested interests there) want to swing things in their direction.

Honestly not a fan of panel selected teams.

  • The panel selection is my concern and not because I am underrating the Big 12. But, I don't believe we are viewed as well by others and that will start to filter into the process.

I think FSU would get in the beauty contest before some of the Big 12 and several PAC 12 would also. All the things going on with Nebraska, A&M and Missouri has taken a toll on the conference with other fans and the media.

The first 10 team big12 was a huge hit strength of schedule wise.

The big12 last year had 10 of the top 15 computer generated SOS numbers. The highest of any conference all time.

Helped greatly by the 9 game 10 team round robin approach. Of course this included AM and Missouri instead of TCU and WVU. But considering the departing teams usual record nothing will change.

The new playoff formula likely calculates SOS similar to rpi in basketball. In this case the big 12 will have a huge advantage as computers view the 9 game round robin as extremely tough. In most cases conference championship games lower SoS. The smart move might be too stay at 10 at least until we see how it works out in the playoffs

Right now no, but I think the PAC 12 will become better than the BIG 12 by the end of the season.

I think the Big 12 in its current form will be battling the Pac 12 for the perceived "3rd place" conference.

All of those schools are about to get a cash infusion like they have never seen before. I think USC, Oregon (ncaa will not hurt them imo) Stanford and Washington will all be very good moving forward and perennial top 25 teams. Add in UCLA as the "aggie sleeping giant" of the west coast and they have the potential to be a quality conference with more national appeal than the Big 12.

Again just my opinion and only time will tell.

Well in the round robin format we have to play KSU every year now so we're screwed on the undefeated part. sarcasm

  • The issue with the a 10 team Big XII is not playing a championship game as oppose to other major conferences playing one. This could be held against the conference from a perception standpoint as it being easier to win a conference. While the league is still playing 9 conference games, the perception of the championship game adds an argument against the Big 12.

What I am saying is perception does not matter if the big 12 champion has the best SOS at the end and SOS is one of the criteria the section committee uses
