Best player you ever played against

  • Not football but Scott Gomez(hockey player) was a damn good catcher...only person to throw me out stealing 2nd base!

    TimmyLonghorn

  • Robert Griffin III and Andrew Luck in 7 on 7 along with a lot of other great players. In real games, Aaron Williams, Kirkendoll, Gideon, and all the local studs from '08.

    jj1363

  • Baseball- John Danks
dude hit 2 3-run bombs off me in one game....

    The SEC of signatures....

  • Very few of you will know the name, but the best I ever saw was Willie Ansley, a tailback from Plainview. He passed up a football scholarship from Oklahoma to play baseball in the Astros system, but I don't believe he ever made the majors. Tremendous athlete. He had it all - balance, speed, power. We also played against William Thomas (linebacker at A&M and Philadelphia) but Ansley was better.

Not football related, but baseball, Jaime Garcia from the Cards!

Also baseball, Freer Buckaroo, Texas Longhorn, and Toronto Blue Jay pitcher Jim Acker.

He was a Sr. and I was a weak hitting Fr. You can guess the outcome.

  • James Street....obviously high school

    HBJ

  • Chris Pryor-Judson HS
Doug Hodo (yes that one) and Cody Carlson (Baylor/Houston Oilers) both of SA Churchill

Koy Detmer in 1987-88. He played for Southwest middleschool in San Antonio. We (fredericksburg) played them those two years. We lost!

Never played against him but watched his bro Ty set all sorts of records while in HS. Also watch Shaq play at SA Cole but was out of HS at the time.

  • Rashard Lewis in H.S.

Played in some pick-up games over the years with Clack, Mihm, Vasquez, Chris Owens, Dexter Pittman, and Jaquizz Rogers.

haha. Yea, not good at all. I faced Jaime 3 times and I never hit him. He was a great hitter in high school. He was 4th batter for Sharyland. He threw a couple of no-hitters against us.

  • John Booty (TCU/NFL DB, not the QB)

Tackled him in a pick up game and took a knee to my right ear which split the upper portion and left a permanent scar. He was a Senior at TCU at the time, working out in prepartion for the NFL draft. He put my lights out but he didn't score... until the next play.

Those who can, do; those who can't, coach; those who never could, complain about the first two.

    David Boston, WR Humble

I played with David Boston, well against on D everyday in practice as corner and safety although Boston played safety too but was WR most of the time! He was big back at Humble High, and got bigger at OSU and the pros. He also played hoops too and was a "Grant Hill" like athlete on the hardwood.

Also, David Givens and Sammy Davis were former teammates. What school did you play for? 21-5A was one of the best in Houston back in the late 90's!!

  • Edwin Simmons in football

Played against a lot of awesome guys in baseball, but mine is probably Cedric Benson. They had Winston playing TE and lead blocking for him most of the day. We played them at Texas Satdium and I think he rolled up about 250 yards on us and left us in the dust on their way to another State Title.

I played DE against the TE Winston/RB Benson duo also. Terrible Day for me but they were fantastic.

You just missed Bertrand Berry freakish athlete, basketball, football and ran hurdles in track. Aldine's Eric Gray was pretty good as well back then. Played against both but probably the most notables were Andy Petite and Justin Thompson. Thompson was nasty.

    Navin Johnson

  • Basketball - Larry Johnson, Dallas Skyline
Football - Barry Foster or Merton Hanks
Track / Cross Country - Lance Armstrong (Plano East)

Yeah he was a couple of grades older than me, but I do know him and his family. His mom was a teacher of mine and she was no joke! Bert started off a big tailback and was a good one. But of course when he went to Notre Dame, he quickly grew out of that body.

  • Eric Foreman- lb/qb Corrigan Camden. Played a little lb at texas before he left.

Brian Robison-lb Splendora. Absolute man-child. Played de at Texas.

Both were on the national championship team

    afolds

  • 1. Jose Cruz Jr.
    2. Antonio Leonardi (went to LSU; blew out his shoulder or elbow early on)

Cruz Jr went from a skinny kid to a grown ass man over the summer leading into our Jr year. Never seen anyone grow that fast.

I watched (and participated) Leonardi throw quite a few 9 & 10 pitch innings. Shake your head and walk back to the dugout nasty.

    lrs

  • David Ash in high school.

    SuperHorn12

  • Didn't get to play against him, but got to enjoy watching Jeff Howe block for my son when he was a young QB in Florence. Never forget the day I met him.... he stood up, shook my hand and said " don't you worry Mr. B, I'm gonna take good care of your boy"

    Lifetime Horn

  • Bob McKay who played OT for the Horns and then the Browns for several years was the best I played against. Roger Mackey from Luling was the best I ever coached against. He dropped out of school after football season was over and was murdered in a drug deal a few months later. He ran 10.5 at the state meet as a frosh and had great lateral quickness to go with it. Matt Bumgardner on that same Luling team played for the Ags and later the Patriots, but Luling had two players who were better than he was. They had 5 guys who ran 10.5 or better that spring, but they were never all healthy and eligible at the same time, and they didn't even enter a 4x100 relay at the district meet. Two other schools from our district, Cuero and Goliad, went 1-2 in the 4x100 at state.

    Rashard Lewis in H.S.

I took the question as a football question but Rashard was my basketball pick.

I was in The Hof in 1996 to watch Elsik vs. Humble. David Boston vs. Lewis was amazing to watch.

  • Basketball: Kenyon Martin and Jerryl Sasser
Baseball: Kerry Wood and Vernon Wells

Side note: wasn't in high school, but I played against Lavar Arrington in AAU basketball in the 6th grade and later played against a guy named Shea Cotton a couple of years later. He was the dominant player of my age group, but through a variety of mishaps, he never made it.
