Best Owners in Professional Sports..........

  • We tend to discuss the bad owners in professional sports (drayton mcclain and jerry jones come to mind)...............with the passing of Jerry Buss this week who would be the best owners in the history of professional sports?

-The list usually starts with Brach Rickey-owner of the Dodgers and an all around first class talent evaluator and human being.

-Clint Murchenson first owner of the Cowboys that set the stage for the Cowboys rise to America's team

-Walter O'Malley owner of the Dodgers

-Jerry Buss 10 championships........may have saved the NBA

-Robert Kraft owner of the NE Patriots one of the 2 best run franchises in professional sports for the past 15 years

-Peter Holt owner of the Spurs .......had the good sense to hire Coach Pop (and let him do his job)

    Others?

  • There is nothing wrong with JJ as a owner. As a GM, he sucks. But as an owner, he's up there.

  • Good owners know when to fire a shitty GM. Case closed. The best owners are like Modell and the Rooneys who stay out of the way and let football people take care of football. Bud Adams Bobby? Are you serious? He did what he had to for his franchise when the city wouldn't build him a new stadium. How about Marge Schott? Just kidding.

  • Talk about an ROI...

Buss purchased the Lakers, the Kings, The Forum, and a 13,000 acre ranch ranch from Jack Kent Cooke in 1979. The price, $67.5M

  • Holt always comes to mind first for me. Spurs are a top 3-5 organization in all of American sports.

Rocky Wirtz of the Blackhawks has done a great job since taking over after his dad passed who was one of the worst owners in all of sports. Ended the longest drought in the NHL.

  • Cuban's done a heck of a job since he bought the team from Perot.

I agree with the Jerry Jones owner vs. GM sentiment in that he wants to win and willing to throw cash into the team. But part of the owner's responsibilities are to install a good mgmt team underneath him, and in that he has failed.

Ted Turner was pretty solid with the Braves. It also helped that he owned the media platform in TBS, etc. in which to broadcast them to the country, making the Braves brand ten times stronger than it ever could have been if left to Atlanta fans alone. He fiddled with the day-to-day operations till the mid-80's but after bringing in Bobby Cox as GM (became HC in 1990), they started their rise to relevancy.

    It was a joke.

Adams is the only owner I know of to moon an opposing fanbase and shoot double rods to another.

    All class!

Schott was a happenstance owner. She got the team because of her hubby.

  • OKC Thunder have a great franchise. They put together a great team for their fans and don't charge them their first born to see them either.

Steinbrenner was a mixed bag.................he meddled too much early with the day to day operations of the team. He finally got smart and hired Joe Torre and Brian Cashman and let them to their job.

  • How about Michael Jordan? He's been nails and what an evaluator.

  • Miami Heat owner Micky Arison...

Spent the $$$ to hire Pat Riley...& then traded for Shaq for a title...& then maxed out Dwayne Wade...& then maxed out Chris Bosh...& then maxed out LeBron

He has no problem spending $$$ to bring in titles

& former Buffalo Bills owner Ralph Wilson should be mentioned as well

He'd be one of the best owners in pro sports if that was all he did. He's a great owner who - like you said - wants to be a GM. Unfortunately he is horrible at it and refuses to give up the job. So he goes from being a great owner to a bad one as a result.

    The Dog

  • Mike Ilitch with the Red Wings. 20 straight playoff appearances and counting, 4 Cups.

George Steinbrenner- He was an asshole but he had the money and wasn't afraid to use it. Brought 7 championships to New York.

..........but she did have a nice dog!

If we were to start a list of the worst owners in pro sports we could say any person who owned a team in Houston would be a good start.................Adams, mcclaine, crane (probably got off to the worse starts of any owner not named jerry jones) et al
