Baylor's Quincy Miller leaving for the NBA

  • Bears are losing a lot of talent. And Scott Drew is not a good enough coach to get them back the NCAA tournament after losing so much talent. I feel terrible for him.

  • Let's see how he deals with losing players like Barnes does each year.

  • This is a mistake on his part. This is a loaded draft. His draft stock improves dramatically just by waiting one year.

  • Not that big of a deal.
Scott Drew is just a phone call away from the next big recruit.

A lot of scouts no longer view this as a loaded draft after the first few picks. The next two drafts, if the draft rules don't change, are liable to be just as or even more talent rich.

A guy drafted 15 one year has made almost the exact same amount of money as a guy drafted 9th the following year by the time the guy drafted a year earlier has qualified for free agency. Meanwhile, the guy who waited a year and was drafted higher has to wait another year for the megamillions.

There are those few players who might leap from late teens to top 5 and wind up making more by staying a year, but they are very, very rare.

What's the reasoning behind this draft not being as talent rich as it has been thought? Did guys not develop as much as they thought or was there just more tape on these guys to see?

Thanks for the heads up. Hadn't heard that before

It's still a deep draft, just not as rich in franchise player talent as might have been originally thought. Teams are still apt to get good, useful players but the star power is now questioned after the first few picks.

Just what I read in a few places.

I totally agree with that. Lots of pieces not many, if any, stars imo

  • so why is there a non-binding deadline for declaring?

  • ...and is BU still a preseason top10 team?

probably not. They are losing both Jones', Miller, and Acy who on average combined to scored half of the Bears' points every game.

  • I just wonder because of the 180 if he has grade issues? Seems odd to me.........

There isn't. There is simply a binding deadline (NCAA) for withdrawing if a player has already declared. That such NCAA deadline is before the NBA deadline for actually declaring . . . Well. life is funny that way sometimes when two institutions make their own schedules and care not one whit for the interests of the other.

Makes some sense. If Harrison Barnes and Perry Jones III had come out last year, they would have both been Top 5. This year having seen both not develop into the "Franchise" type player they were expected to become, you could make a solid argument that they lost both money and status by sticking around another year in the hopes that they would improve their games and their futures. Never wouldve guessed...

I would say they are still gonna be ranked in the Top 15, because they still return a ton of experience and talent with Jackson, Heslip, Bello, UCLA-transfer J'mison Morgan who redshirted this year, and F Cory Jefferson. Pierre Jackson I think will be one of the Big-12 POY candidates. Freshmen Isaiah Austin, Ricardo Gathers, and LJ Rose are on the way.

Expanding on what bierce said, the NCAA would like its deadline to be binding, but a little digging/common sense showed that the player need not announce anything before the NCAA deadline (or, in Miller's case, say he was staying) and keep eligibility until the NBA deadline.

The NCAA deadline came into play only if the player declared prior to it and needed to back out.
