Bats Go Quiet in Loss -- Horns drop 5-3 decision to Sac State

The Longhorn bats were shut down by Sacramento State starter Brennan Leitao and a rough outing from Nathan Thornhill was enough to give Texas its first loss of 2013.

  • Dave I would disagree with you a little here................if we make the plays on defense Texas wins the game or at least it goes to extra innings. I made the point on another thread that our staff is not is not over powering and we have to catch the ball behind them if this team is going to win. We didn't do that today..............in addition the diving catch off the bat of Weiss was big............2 score and Weiss is standing on 3rd if the LF doesn't make that catch (for Sac)

  • It's very early and I think Augie will shift some pieces and make tons of lineup changes. He loves to tinker. Loved what I saw from the relief pitching. It's a major question mark for this team.

Payton has looked good in the 4 hole early. But he's a great 2 hole type hitter. We just have nothing else. Not currently

  • Short stops errors are inexcusable. Hits right at placed players are just like last year. I wish I could see our hitters hit to areas "where they ain't"! Augie's choices for DH are questionable. With us being two runs down in the 8th, he brings in a guy who is batting 128 and has 5 hits in 39 games instead of bringing in someone who has a better batting average and hits. It's almost as if the coaches had decided the game was lost so they'd just bring in a guy who might have a hit. Totally questionable call in my opinion.

  • The Horns should not be struggling against Sac State, especially at home - hopefully, this is just a sign of nerves, etc

  • Another crappy athletic program! Bah humbug

  • WTF was augie thinking?

I played for him his 1st year at UT, and the last year of Gus - What a difference.

    - God Bless Texas

  • Not being able to sweep sac state isn't a promising start.

I don't disagree with that, but the Horns going down in order in four innings, and not registering one extra base hit were equally to blame IMO.

Sac State is a decent team.

With all the new faces on the field this Texas team will be one that gets better as the season goes along. If they were relying on basically all returning starters I'd agree with you, but it's going to take a little bit for this team to find its stride. I think they'll be fine come NCAA tourney time. CWS is another story...

Did you ask Augie after the game about all of the first pitch swings by the Horns. I don't remember his teams having so many...........I know the scouting report said the pitcher threw strikes but the Horns were not patient at all yesterday.

Their plan was to be aggressive at the plate with Leitao. He thought the run of 1-2-3 innings started because the Horns got too conservative and stopped going after the first pitch.

There is not one valid point in your post.
    1. I don't remember Jesus being a shortstop.
    2. Pretty sure the plan yesterday was to "hit it where they ain't", just like any other day in baseball. They did that 14 times on Friday.
    3. Augie's decision > your opinion.

2 freaking games in and people are hitting the panic button.

    Opt out already.

That is not good enough for some of these people. They wan't what they want, and they wan't it now.

Augie said they should have done it more. The kid was throwing the first pitch for strikes and they needed to get him out his rhythm.
That pitcher had an unusual delivery, he changed his release point, and his pitches had alot of movement. He was on yesterday, and he was tough.

They have some real talent. Hoskins is better than anyone we have. There is a shitload of baseball talent in California and most of it stays there.

  • Everyone missed on Hoskins. Sac st. was the only school to offer a full ride. Who spotted him? Tommy Nicholson, our hitting coach.
I think he will find and develop the same kind of talent here.
