Baseball wikipedia page- Longhorns

  • I'm one of the publishers on the Baylor site. I was looking up Texas records for most wins in a season and came across a discrepancy in the number of wins for the Longhorn baseball team in 2004.

Wikipedia page says 51 for the 2004 team

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Texas_Longhorns_baseball

Media guides says 58 for the 2004 team

    http://www.texassports.com/auto_pdf/p_hotos/s_chools/tex/sports/m-basebl/auto_pdf/ba-0910-mg-history

That 2002-03 and 2003-04 sports years were amazing across the 4 major sports of baseball, basketball and football for UT

    116-35 in 2002-03

Baseball 50-20; MBB 26-7 (Final 4); WBB 29-6 (Final 4); Football 11-2 (Cotton Bowl win over Saban's LSU team)

    123-31 in 2003-04

    Baseball 58-15; MBB 25-8; WBB 30-5; Football 10-3

Really the run of Texas sports for the whole decade is remarkable. And I may be missing a year for Texas athletic excellence that was better than 2003-04. I remember those Gustafson teams in the 80s won over 60 games a few times and Conradt was winning regularly back then. But if memory serves me right- Texas basketball for the men was not winning over 20 games until Penders took over. If there is a season I am missing that combined Longhorn wins were over 123, I would like to know for accuracy's sake.

My interest is that Baylor has a shot at the 2003-04 bar set by Texas. Bears currently have 115 wins and 18 losses across those four sports. The stars have all aligned for the Bears this year.

If anyone on here has an interest to correct the wikipedia page, I wanted to point that out.

  • Baylor has had a great year. For me, national titles in football and baseball in that period for Texas, along with the other noted accomplishments, set them far apart from the rest of the Texas universities.

I don't think there's any doubt about that.

Baylor is doing some great things, but the Bears aren't doing them at the postseason level that Texas did from 2003-05 so far in the big three men's sports.

While that might not be fair, that's how athletic departments are measured on sites like this. It's football, baseball and basketball ... and then there's everything else.

  • no one is arguing that- championships in football and men's basketball are far greater than WBB and baseball for revenue and perception. Women's basketball and baseball are equal from a total revenue standpoint. And per game women's basketball outdraws baseball in all conferences except the SEC (Tennessee the only exception).

Oklahoma had a great year in 84-85:

    55 wins for baseball
    23 for WBB
    31 for MBB
    9 for football

And their 2001-02 teams were really good for football and basketball

31 wins for MBB (Final 4)
31 wins for WBB (championship game)
12 wins for football (won Rose bowl)
but their baseball team wasn't great- 35 wins

But Texas has sustained excellence across those 4 sports- many years over 100 wins combined.

Just so we are clear..............BU's had a very good year on the field. However they cheated to get there.................if you score a TD and the WR is off sides the TD doesn't count. Think about it! The basketball wins should be cut in half or thrown out all together.
