Barnes: "people that don't really matter."

  • In case you missed the AAS article Dave posted about the mystery of this year's men's basketball team--

    The last paragraph:

    Barnes said that he had not read the comments but that questions about whether Dodds supports him are “somewhat idiotic. He doesn’t let outside people, people that don’t really matter, influence what he says.”

    Pile on. He deserves it for that completely unnecessary insult to the fanbase.

  • I don't know. I'm down on Barnes, but that comment just doesn't bother me. Frankly, my opinion of him doesn't matter, and I'm OK with that. It shouldn't matter much.

  • He's just a product of the environment Dodds created. Championships doesn't matter. Beating OU(Mack) and Kansas(Barnes) doesn't matter. Getting embarrassed by rivals doesn't matter.Maximizing all the resources at your disposal doesn't matter. Getting out of the first weekend doesn't matter. Playing an awful brand of basketball doesn't matter. Late season collapses don't matter. Fans don't matter.

    Money matters. The status quo matters. Spinning results and crafting a narrative matters.

  • Quotes can easily be taken out of context. If coaches, or players, let every Tom, Dick and Sally get in their head, they are going to have a lot harder time getting the job done. Why encourage more piling on? What does that do for the program? We're havin a crappy year, the fates have worked against us somewhat and Barnes is going to miss the tourney for the first time in his tenure. There are a lot of idiots out there whose expectations and opinions are totally unrealistic.

    Why do you assume he's talking about the fans? I take that comment as being directed more towards the media.

  • Rick Barnes is as straight a shooter as it comes. He is the exact opposite of Mack in that regard, so I am willing to give him much more benefit of the doubt in quotes like that than I am Mack.

  • Rick can have redass with the fan base. We do not support Texas basketball. This is not a new phenomenon. He has been bitching about fan support since he got here.

  • I hated to see a picture of him with a huge smile from ear to ear as he shook hands with Bell Self after the Kansas embarrassment. The first though in my mind was...."what could he possibly be so happy about??" If your team just got a beat down on national t.v., you do not shake hands with the opposing coach with a huge grin on your face! I know our opinions do not matter to him or Mack, but he should at least make it seem like he cares about losing in such a horrible fashion...

    Actually I think his comment reflects the opposite of a thin skin. Doesn't sound like he's the one crying to me.

    Deloss.

    And I don't mind this from Barnes because the UT students and fans never support basketball unless its a huge game or the team is top 10, and even then it's not real support just wanting to latch on a winner. If I were Barnes I'd hate the Texas fans too.

    Now Mack is different. The diehard Texas fans make Texas Football and it couldn't be what it is without the fans. Mack bitching about it is weak as hell

  • Thanks to everyone for the responses. I'm in a seminar and unable to respond in detail right now, but I will offer a few thoughts on the issue later today. Perhaps I am guilty of overreacting and misinterpreting, but I'm not convinced that i am.

    For the record, I will claim to have been a guy who fiercely defended Barnes regarding the comment about not being "obsessed" with winning championships, have (had) long defended him with explanations why earlier seasons might not be failings as bad as thought at the time, and have long supported him remaining at the helm.

    At present, I have grave, grave doubts about the program, the chances to succeed, and how the fans are being addressed.

    Talkers back at the mic.
