Augie Has Done More With Less

  • A lot of fans have been down on this squad this year. This obviously hasn't been Augie's greatest year but he has done more with less this year than any other IMO. Let's recap what Augie has had to deal with:

    Injury Before Season:
Sam Stafford (Staff Ace LHP, Starter)
    Cohl Walla (Starter CF)
Taylor Boardman (High School Ace, Potential Starting Pitcher/Relief)

    Done for Season:
Parker French (Starting Pitcher, Big 12 FOY) (Injury)
Ricky Jacquez (Starting Pitcher/ Relief) (Disciplinary)

    Missed Valuable Games:
    Taylor Stell (Starter CF)

Essentially he lost 1 for sure starter (his ace) and 1 potential starter or relief depth guy. Then when French establishes himself as the ace midway through the year, he gets lost for the season. At the same time, he loses a quality arm in Jacquez for disciplinary at the same time.

Keep in mind 6 out of 8 position starters are Sophomores or Freshman (Weiss, Payton, Felts, Silver, (sophomores) Marlow, Stell, (Freshman) with Walsh being a Junior. The best overall pitcher (Knebel) is a sophomore. This team is YOUNG and has been raided by the injury bug/disciplinary!

When your game evolves around pitching and defense, how do you lose 4 quality pitchers and expect to have the train just keep on rolling?

Yes, I agree. He does need to find a hitting coach. Look at the softball team for proof. They couldn't score 2 runs when Osterman was here. They went out and got a hitting coach and bam, they have 2 girls with the homerun and rbi records.

Let's beat Kansas at 12 pm, secure an NCAA tourney bid, and get this re-built train rolling!

  • Well said. This team was snake bitten from the start.

  • The injuries to the pitching staff hurt but that shouldn't affect the hitters. Going 1-3 against the 6th place team in the league & going scoreless in the last game shouldn't happen. I believe Auggie will right the ship and a good hitting coach along with some hitting talent will help. Mack made a lot of changes after a bad year, maybe Auggie should too.

  • No excuse for the continual struggles every season on offense. If Baylor and ATM can recruit run producers then no reason Augie can't.

  • The pitching staff is young, so I expected them to up and down for the season, but the defense is abysmal and the offense has been horrible for 3 years.

Anyone could see this season coming from a mile away if they had watched the last 2 years. Plus it's not like Cohl Walla is a sure fire thing either. Augie either needs to change his recruiting approach, or retire.

  • I agree we need a hitting coach. But it does send a down message when your pitching staff gives up 3 runs in the top of the first (happened a lot this season) or like against Missouri, gives up 5 runs in the 4th. Yes the bats are weak and need to step it up, but Augie has recruited a hitting team that plays small ball and relies on pitching to give up only 2-3 runs a game. They aren't built on overcoming 5-6 run deficits from a weakened pitching staff.

We need a hitting coach and a new recrutiing philosophy (power hitters) for sure. But the point is, we finished 3rd in the Big 12 and are 1 win away from securing a post season bid with all of the injuries and lineup adjustments. Ill give Augie a pass this year.

  • I'm not going to downvote you because that's silly, but I completely disagree.

The defense and base running is, and has been, terrible. That is lack of focus. Less talented players should still be able to focus on fundamentals. I also don't buy for a second that injuries in the pitching staff have anything to do with the fact that there are very few decent hitters on this roster.

  • Augie needs to look no further than what Mack Brown did a year ago. Younger, hungrier coaches with a sense of urgency.

Agree and yes, the lack of offense is a huge concern. It has been a consistent theme for a few years now.
As for this years squad, Augie is ultimately responsible for recruiting. He needs to make the tough decisions regarding his coaching staff or get out of the way. I love what he has done in the past but we need an infusion of passion among the staff (read: Harmon).

  • Some things to keep in mind:

    1. Baseball is different than other sports. It's more like basketball than football, where freshmen are young, but they also should be able to compete at a higher level than they typically do in football.

    2. They have lost a ton of pitching this year. Just having Sam Stafford would have made a huge difference.

    3. The number of scholarships are so limited in baseball 11.3 (I think) that teams typically have to decide to put more emphasis on hitting or pitching. The Longhorns have decided to focus on pitching. In addition, because of the spacious ballpark it's difficult to attract power hitters. Thus the Longhorns really are having a tough time attracting quality hitters.

The team doesn't struggle every year on offense. They produce enough to win 2 CWS Championships and be in the final series 2 additional times in the last 15 years. That means 4 final appearances in 15 years, 8 CWS appearancees, and 8 Big 12 Championships.

Last years team was not a good offensive team but made the CWS. This team has been good at times on offense and bad at times. This team is just not very talented now and one reason is the injury situation..................IMHO

Last year's team also had 3 starters that were taken in the 1st 5 rounds of the MLB draft, including 2 in the Top 50 picks. It also shows that Knebel is not a starter and way he was used this year was ridiculous.

You have 14-15 pitchers on your team, yet Augie only uses 6-8. It's been like that for years. Augie's approach needs to change or he needs to retire.

  • Augie might retire because he is in his mid 70's but his approach to baseball is sound in all phases of the game.

Eh, i don't really buy that. I've never heard a recruit, pitcher or hitter, mention ballpark size as a reason he chose a particular school. You'd think they'd also be smart enough to realize that scouts use more than just stats when evaluating prospects.

eh, bunting a guy over from first base with nobody out isn't what I'd call sound.

Augie has won more games than any coach in any college sport by bunting guys over from first, second and third ...............with 0 outs,1 out or in some cases 2 outs.

Do you have another "intelligent" comment?

  • austinr, even Auggie wouldn't bunt with two outs unless they're bunting for a hit and then it is almost always the hitter's decision. Also the percentages on bunting with one out are pretty small even in small ball. I do agree that Auggie has been very successful with his brand of ball and IMO can continue but think changes on the staff need to be made on the offensive side.

  • Q&A: Texas baseball coach Augie Garrido makes case for an NCAA bid | NewsOK.com

Perennially considered a college baseball powerhouse, Texas doesn't worry about making the NCAA Tournament. Usually, the Longhorns are more concerned about how far they will go in it.

I have seen Augie bunt with 2 outs..............with a runner on third and a hitter who can handle the bat (with speed).

That's extremely sound. With these new bats, everyone has to play small ball! Small ball wins championships.

Exactly, it's been proven statistically that bunting a guy over from first with nobody out doesn't make any sense, but augie continues to take the bat out of the hitters hand for no reason.

    Heisenberg

  • austinr, I agree that there are times when you have the right player with the right positioning of the infield players the batter may bunt (drag), much of the time that is a decision the batter will make or a joint decision between he and the coach. In that case he's bunting for a hit just as if he's swinging away. I'm not making an issue with your original statement because bunting with 1 or 2 outs happens but except in rare cases only done when your bunting for a hit.

That's the problem. Team built on defense and pitching but no hitting!! There are many players who can play defense and also hit. Until he recruits the Houston area also we are doomed to be mediocre.
