Interesting that their coaches say they have held a bit of the offense back. They also say Potts has been good on third down, which is big.

Worth a read IMO if you have 2 minutes.

    Thanks, good read.

And we have shown a propensity to give up big 3rd down plays, whether by lapse or penalty, so we need to fix that asap going in to this game.

  • “Our strength is passing the football; their strength is their pass defense and being able to rush the passer,” Brown said, “so it’ll be strength on strength, and we’ll see who the best one is.”

  • This is probably the best matchup our defense will have all year. It will allow us to use more DE's in pass rush situations.

I think that's the match-up where Tech may not realize what they are getting into by reducing their OL splits. Before, Leach had them lined up nearly 8 yards from the ball. With the new splits, it looks more conventional. I just think that may cause some issues for Tech.

Can you get a little bit more specific. What will be the disadvantages by going to more conventional splits?

Also, everything I have read and seen from the Tech offense this year is that there is a greater emphasis on the screens and quick passes. Do you worry this will neutralize the Texas pass rush?

  • I know you were asking BB but...

The shorter splits puts our speed rushers significantly closer to the QB and since we are utilizing DE's on the interior because of depth ot compounds the benefit. The screens and quick passes may offset the lack of wide splits some, but it also keeps everything in front of us and as long as we take good angles and tackle well we should be okay. I think our speed on defense will also offset their screens and quick passes.
