Otis Kirk of Hawgs247 and others reporting that John L. Smith has been hired as the interim head coach for the 2012 season.

Wasn't the knock against him that he was a little too fragile mentally to be head coach? I'm not familiar much with Big 10 football but I do remember the self-slapping incident. Strange they just didn't hire internally for interim.

I was reading that one of the reasons was because he had previous coaching experience so he could deal with all the off the field duties better than an interim from within.

He used to coach Michigan State. He was dealt a bad hand but he was a disaster. Here is one his lowlights. His biggest accomplishment at MSU is that his final year and his ass on the block mid season somehow or another we had a game against Northwestern that is still to this day is the biggest comeback in NCAA history. It saved his job for another week.
