Anyone have any insight on Jeffcoat going pro early?

  • He reminds me a lot of his father. Very solid player, but doesn't have the explosive first step of elite pass rushers. Dad went late in the first round after his senior year. Jackson is going to have to put up much better numbers next year if he is going to be a first round pick. Six sacks and 60 total tackles doesn't translate to the first round. The bowl game was his best game; but in reality; he simply held his outside responsibility and Cal. ran into him.

  • Nothing definitive yet. Must are thinking he will but hoping he doesn't. The pec injury is going to be something to keep an eye on since he's missing so much time with bennie

  • He needs to prove he can stay healthy for an entire season as well as produce before thinking about going in the 1st round.

  • He is a lock for the second round, but if he can get 10+ sacks then he's a lock for the first round. I don't necessarily think he has a ways to go because "IT" is there he just has to maintain it and play consistently. Keep in mind that he played through his injuries for the latter half of the season.

    He has not said anything and probably will not, other than to say the NFL is his final goal...I know daddy believes in the college experience or at least used to...He used to profess a dislike for early entrance into the NFL by players because of the need for continued development and the need for maturity growth...

    Unless he has a blow up year, I think the chances are better he stays...

    He actually had eight sacks per MBTF, and all in the final seven games. He seemed injured early in the season, as he wasn't moving as well as he had as a freshman. Once he got healthy he was pretty damn good, especially for a true sophomore. If he's healthy the whole season next year I'd be very surprised if he doesn't put up double-digit sacks.

  • His surgery may work against him going early. Essentially, he won't be a big part of the S&C program this off season. He will probably still have a good year in college ball but if he sticks around for his senior year......after a year of working with Bennie..... he'll have a great year and he'll be able to make some money. JMO.

    His surgery will likely keep him out into the summer. No snaps in spring is my guess.

    I would bet on this.

    Those offseason injuries are the ones where halfway through next season you wonder why Jeffcoat is only putting up average stats, and then you remember he was extremely limited in the offseason.

    A good bet would be that his injury makes him a four=year player.

    At the same time, he has the benefit of playing opposite Okafor, and that certainly will help.

  • Given that his dad was an NFL player, If he has a good year he'll go because his dad will point out you don't leave money on the table, something he might likely do if he stays. Sure, he MIGHT make more if he stayed around as a senior, isn't injured, has a monster year, is drafted in the first round to a bigger contract. OR, he takes good money after his junior year, gets paid earlier, gets to reneogiate his NFL deal a year sooner after his first contract is up, still scores huge, with less risk.

  • His family is not in a financial bind and he's not a RB or QB so I don't see given his off-season surgery and what not why he would be too excited about coming out after junior year.

    I would dispute the use of the word obviously here. I don't think he's a lock for the 1st round at all.

    That's not to say he isn't a great player for us when healthy. He is. But he's not the physical specimen or demon off the edge that 1st round pass rushers are.

    For reference, the last few 1st round DEs were Von Miller (3-4 OLB), Marcell Dareus (3-4 DE), Aldon Smith (3-4 OLB), JJ Watt (3-4 DE), Robert Quinn, Ryan Kerrigan, Adrian Clayborn, Cameron Jordan, etc. Or guys like Jason Pierre-Paul, Brian Orakpo.

    Signatures are stupid. You should block them.

    Things like this are so underrated. I remember Gruden going crazy over Kindle because he could do this as a senior, where most guys were not.

  • IF he puts a whole season together, he has a chance to go in the first 3 rounds, but if he has 2 good years, he would be much higher in the draft.

  • I think all Jeffcoat is focused on and worrying about is getting healthy at this point and recovering from his surgery. All else will fall into place if he concentrates on his health. No need to put much thought in possible events way later down the line.

  • Jackson is technically sound, but as of this season he just doesn't have that big time get off first step burst that makes DE go 1st round. Not sure if he will ever get that, but with his technically sound play and strength he can be a solid DE in the league. Since he might not have the quickness off the ball to be a star DE he might be a guy that stays 4 years.

    Won't he still be in the condition program . . . just working on other areas?
