All-Time Top 10: Quarterbacks

Today's All-Time Top 10 looks at the most idolized, criticized and scrutinized position on the football field. Here are the best Texas quarterbacks to play since 1960.

  • Tough call to compare all of the wishbone to the pro-style guys IMO. That's what I struggled with the most.

  • No Bobby Layne????

2 time All American 18-3 record his final 2 years capped off by a #5 finish and a win in the Sugar Bowl over Bama.

Not one guy in the bottom half of your list as accomplished. :)

The list, as with all of the others, only starts at 1960.

  • Ah haaaaaa

In that case, really like the top 10.

  • Alan Lowry was an outstanding punter as well as a great DB and QB and has had a long career as an NFL assistant.

Akins is Drew Brees uncle, if I'm not mistaken.

  • "Kirk Bohls: "If I had one game to win and one player to do it, that'd be Vince Young. He was uniquely dynamic and singularly sensational. He's the one person who transcended the game. "

Well, you know, besides Reggie Bush that is.

  • I was in a barber shop in Longview the summer after Street's freshman season (not eligible for varsity until the soph season). The consensus among the men in the shop was that Street should focus on defensive back, because he would never play quarterback at Texas.

Instead, Street wound up pushing Bill Bradley to DB, as he took over at QB and never lost a game.

In many ways, he is a lot like Colt McCoy. A guy that had plenty of doubters, but willed himself to success.

  • skipper,

You are correct, Marty is Drew's Uncle.

  • Ranking Simms #9 is downright insulting. Think how good a QB he would've been had just worn a bigger helmet, had a rag arm, was 3 inches shorter, and had that deer in headlight look. We'd be calling him the greatest QB to ever play at Texas!

I don't think you watched the whole game. At the end there was only one person who transcended the game. Reggie was busy trying to flip balls to other receivers.

  • It would be interesting if you could rerun the 2001 season (Major's senior year) to see where he would have finished on the list if he were the starting QB. That team from a talent standpoint, may have been one of the best Texas teams in the last 20 years. My guess is the Horns play in the National Title Game vs Miami (and lose)..............he would have been right there with Colt.

  • Jordan91... that was sarcasm directed at Bohls when he voted Bush the Heisman winner over VY. At least I think it was.

  • simms ranked several spots below Applewhite? interesting

Donnie Little? nice sentimental pick... top 10? no

  • In Fall drills, Major looked horrid and was struggling mightly from his injuries.

OTOH, during the regular season outside of the OU game (and I still believe if Roy doesn't pull up lame, we win that game going away) Simms enjoyed great success.

People forget how strong Simms finished '00 after Major was hurt, setting records vs an aggie secondary loaded with NFL players or against a Top 10 Oregon team in the bowl game, carrying the team after Hodges went down.

I don't think you got it. He was speaking for Kirk Bohls referencing his Heisman vote.

Against Oregon, Simms was just about perfect in the 4Q. Can't really blame him that BJ and Roy both had case of the drops, but where as some of our fans are so willing to forget/overlook Major's failings, they're more than eager to dwell on Simms' bad games.

  • Very true Shoe,

Not surprised at a down vote for raining on the revisionist history parade.

Sorry guys, I get that Major has special status and I wish he'd never been injured but the fact is, after injury he just wasn't the same guy.

And we get some of you hate Simms but give the devil his due, kid performed well for us overall and despite Bohls' chickenshit shot at him, he preformed well in big games too.

Simms did not perform well in any OU game or against Colorado. So I don't know that other than A&M that he performed well in "big" games per se.

  • I'll say this again because it's worth repeating. Trying to compare wishbone quarterbacks and their stats (which were primarily about winning ball games) and pro-style quarterbacks and their accomplishments is a difficult thing.

Major's best season was his first as a starter IMO.

Just off top of my head, Simms was the deciding offensive factor against Nebraska in Lincoln. He was also the difference maker against LSU in the Cotton Bowl.

The guy did manage to win 26 games right?

For as great as Major was in some big games, he was equally bad in some smaller ones. I don't think he could've made it through an entire season due to injuries.

  • Major deserves a special place in Longhorn history in even if his only season was 1998. Everybody QB got hurt and Major was the only option left. Yes he never played well in practice but rose to the the occasion many times in big games. Major and Ricky Williams saved the 1998 season with great wins at NU (when NU was NU), the outstanding 4th quarter drive vs A&M, a top 10 (plus Big 12 Championship) team and a Cotton Bowl win vs a good MSU team. Major played outstanding vs OU, NU and bowl games his entire career at UT. Add to that the second half vs CU in the Big 12 Championship Game in 2001 followed by the record breaking performance in the Holiday vs a very good UW team................

Simms belongs in the 8,9,10 range because he was a good QB but never special.........IMHO

Meant to chime in on your earlier post about this. It's so true. Not just at quarterback, but every position. Football schemes change every so often making it really hard to grade across generations. Quarterbacks' stats are different based on the type offense as are running backs, wide receivers, etc.

It's great how passionate people were/are about the Applewhite/Simms dilemma. I knew this list was going to start the debate back up again. These debates never get old to me.
