I want blood!!! we'd have to win by one million cavillion fafillion points to calm me down!!!
Super write-up, Jeff.
After reading that, my opinion is that I STILL want Mack gone this year.
Mack has always said stupid shit (coach speak) at his press conferences but I always gave him a pass no matter how frustrating it was because he was winning. Now when he does it I just see it as part of the problem and it pisses me off. I am sure other fans feel this way.
All Powers did was allow Mack to step down (forced or on his own) with a saving of face.
If Mack wants to win me back it's really simple. Stop making 10 wins your goal. That is a hollow goal. Look back at 2000-2004. Those ten win seasons meant nothing aside from the Rose Bowl in the 04 season because it was something new for Texas. A Rose Bowl against a top 5 all time wins opponent. It was the springboard the program needed. A springboard that could have happened sooner if Mack would do one simple thing: focus on beating Oklahoma. It really comes down to that for me. Beat OU and your season will more likely than not be a success. Here's what happened in the years Mack beat OU under Stoops:
1999-Big 12 Championship game appearance, lost in a rematch to Nebraska
2005-Big 12 Championship, National Championship
2006-in position to win the Big 12 South till they lost Colt to injury
2008-in position to win the Big 12 South till they lost to Tech, Fiesta Bowl
2009-Big 12 Championship, MNC appearance
So out of those 5 victories, only one of those didn't involve playing for the Big 12 title. Win that game and you start our team on a run that could be special. Now go look at all the years we didn't beat OU. Only one of those can be considered a true success, 2004.
If Mack would just put more emphasis on how important it is to beat Oklahoma then his players might actually believe it. They might actually not look scared when an OU player mouthes off at them. They might push back and show that OU player that they aren't scared. Mack needs to permanently remove the term "scares you to death" from his vocabulary. It's a loser mentality. Stop playing up each opponent like they are the 85 Bears or the mid 90s Nebraska teams. Stop playing not to lose. Stop handcuffing your assistants. You've taken one of the brightest offensive minds in CFB and made him look like a younger Greg Davis. Go back and watch Harsin's Fiesta Bowl breakdowns of his plays the beat OU. It's night and day from the Texas version of Bryan Harsin.
I want our goals in this order: Beat OU, win the Big 12, let the MNC come after that because 2 out of 5 times you beat OU, you played in the MNC. Stop treating it like just another great rivalry game that you're so honored to be coaching in. Treat it like your job depends on it because it does. You have taken my favorite game of the year and made it a game I dread. I feel just like the players when I enter the Cotton Bowl. I'm hoping for OU mistakes that allow us to get up early. I'm hoping some OU injuries from previous weeks help us. I dread the Texas OU game now. Hell, next year I'm going to try to find the absolute cheapest ticket I can find. I'm done paying out the rear for that game. It would be better for me to take the $400 I spend on that game and lighting it on fire. I used to treat that game like it was my bowl game for the year so it didn't matter how much I had to pay. The problem is everyone in that stadium on the Texas side wants to win that game more than you. Each of us hates OU more than you. You almost seem just in awe of the game. Dammit go out and try to win it. That team is taking your glory, Mack. 8 Big 12 championships you could have had if you just put more emphasis on that game.
Stop being so thin skinned. Stop worrying about the fan base. Start winning. That's how you get us back.
Whether you support Mack or not the bashing at this point is more destructive than it is helpful. It seems pretty clear that he's going to be back next year for what I suspect will be a swan song. All the outrage does at this point is likely deter potential recruits that the guy following Mack would like to have. I doubt the criticism will have much, if any, impact on Mack's coming or going any sooner. It just makes us all more miserable.
It is time for change. Nothing else needs to be said.
Enough of the Mack Brown PR Bull Shit machine of 10 win seasons, conference championship is goal
