Ahmad's take

  • Sorry guys but I won't be able to transcribe all of Ahmad's comments before the game.

I just reached him this morning. He had a high school game he had to travel to and I was in a meeting when he called on Friday.

    Here's what he said:

He said he feels like this is one of the season's signature games. He felt like West Virginia was that, that OU was supposed to be that.

He said that Tech is very sound on defense.

He really thinks Tech's DT Hyder is one of the top 2 or 3 DTs in the league. Says running up the middle will be tough sledding because of Hyder.

Wants to see Texas run more toss sweeps, jet sweeps and do it early.

On defense, he wants Texas to play sound, fundamental football.

Thinks Tech may be underestimating the Longhorns because "right now, we can't stop anything. We can't stop the run, we can't stop the pass."

Feels like the streak of losses to ranked teams in the AP has to stop or you start to question a person's philosophy. "I have no idea how it happens," Ahmad said, "but I just know it effects the team on the whole."

"Bottom line is we need to beat a ranked opponent."

His prediction for the game was Texas 48- Tech 42. He also said he's never, in his life, picked against Texas and he's not going to start now. He thinks Texas has to be able to score to win the game and he feels like what Tech does - rub routes, big line gaps - those are things that Texas has not proven they can defend.

I asked him about his takeaways from Kansas. He felt like when Texas went simple in the second half on defense things started to seem to work. But he said that was against Kansas who just isn't any good. He said basically putting Vaccaro next to the referee behind the LBs was a move he'd like to see more of. He's the team's best tackler on the back end and the smartest, too.

Wants to see more out of the Texas offense. Wants to see more "pizazz". Also feels like it's hard to find the hot hand of your playmaker if you don't get them the ball until the 4th quarter. Feels like Texas has to get Monroe and Goodwin the ball in unorthodox ways because their speed is special and they're seniors who others look to for confidence in themselves.

  • hornrush, I'm on record as disagreeing with you on Edmond. The play of the DTs, specifically the incessant stunting in the face of zone runs, gives him no help whatsoever.

Offense has to come out with all guns firing. You have to get the ball in the playmakers hands...from the beginning and however you can. Doing it in a different way (unorthodox from what the other team has seen) is great. if this works, you get lineman out of position just a little easier and can get better blocks for a few attempts up the middle. If they put someone over Espi, you have to do something different than you have. TCU scored points and coulda/shoulda won in reg time, with a freshman QB that could run and keep them honest. When he got hurt, it reallly hurt TCU. Ash will have to be able to take off at times.

Defensively, we have to do what we did the 2nd half last week, bat some balls at the line, stop mugging LB's, lay the wood t their WR's, and hope for some turnovers. I hope MB2, Oak, Edmond, control the line of scrimmage and have monster games. Our DB's are going to have play one of their best cover games of the year as well. My 02 cents. Hook Em for the Win!
